Need help concerning wolves!

Postby Heart of Sword » Sat May 14, 2005 7:46 am

I'm not telling anyone where I am, but it seems that there's wolves around. And where I am, there aren't supposed to be wolves. It's not that they don't want wolves around or anything, but nobody thinks they're here, and they are. I found some massive dog tracks around the woods and heard one howling once. And a friend of mine has seen a black one.

So, uh, should I tell the wildlife department? People kill coyotes around here and I'm REALLY nervous that someone's going to accidentally get a wolf. But I'm also afraid to tell the wildlife department because I don't know if they'll kill them or not...:?:

Do any wolf-lovers here know of a wolf biologist that I could contact? I really need to talk to one about this. I don't want the wolves to die. And if someone gets one, they're going to get a massive fine. They aren't bothering anybody either--they're very skittish and keep to themselves.

The big problem is that we've got coyote issues, so if people start killing the coyotes, the wolves are in big trouble.

Call Animal Control; that's at least one step.

I don't think the Wildlife Department will kill them, they're endangered for the most part.

They could be wolves...then again they might be large coyotes.Wolves are not the only thing that can howel. Contact a local game warden. (wonders if they exist outside of Maine...) I am sure you state has a game and wildlife board. They would be the best to contact. Considering how much wolves are loved...I don't think you have to worry about them being shot. More then likely if they are a pest...they will reloacate them.

I don't know if they are wolves or not. It would seem strange to have both wolves and coyotes in the same territory. We also have coyotes but no wolves.I think it
may either be a larger coyote or else a rather big wild dog.In any case check
with the Wildlife folk and ask them if there are any wolves in your area before you
do anything else.

They're either one or the other. If they were wolves you wouldn't see too many coyotes. And no the Wildlife Department wouldn't kill them this is 2005 not 1905.

Wrong. Many times you will see Wolves coming into a new area. Since they don't stop at borders and ask for directions. This is why many times people get in trouble shooting "big coyotes" Its not just someone who wants to kill wolves. If it was, they would not take them to taxidermists, etc.

Wildlife folk and ask them if there are any wolves in your area before you
do anything else.

Good luck. Most govt agencies sound like robots. There are no wolves here. We don't have wolves around here. Heck, even when faced with seeing one alive or dead they deny all knowledge. To be honost, I doubt your gonna get a straight answer from anyone. Because one group hates the wolves, and the other group refuses to be honost about where they are or how many there are.

It still could be a rather large wild dog or dog gone wild.If you live in an area like mine then a lot of people tend to dump unwanted dogs in the country. Many of these, unfortunately, have a tendency to go wild.So it could be a dog that has been dumped by it's owner and who has gone feral. That is one possibility though not
the only one.

Wolves huh?

Well, Cyotes are for the most part opportunist, they like to scavange alot. All predators like to scavange, but Cyotes are more fond of going into house communities and raiding trash, killing small town pets, drinking water from pools (Especially if it's in a desert area, then anyone with a pool is going to attract attention).

Wolves, well, wolves are very social and secluded animals. If it's only one wolf, it might be a rogue and therefore highly dangerous. A rogue wolf become highly opportunistic and will scavange and hunt for easy prey, that means small pets, trash, and unaware hikers (Do you have trails by where you live?) But if it's a pack community, they'll stay away. Wolves don't like people at all....they'll stay far away from a house comunity. However until your absolutely sure, don't wander anywhere at night, keep lids on all your tash cans, if you have any small pets keep them indoors (Including domestic dogs, these are no contest for a large alpha male wolf), if there are trails and you do like to hike always go with a group of 3 or more, and always hike during the day. Also, it would be wise to contact animal control so they can at the least be informed. No wolves will be killed as long and no one gets harmed, and the chances of someone getting harmed will go down as soon as the public is made aware of the situation. However hunting and trapping wolves is illegal, or at least for the most part, I'm not sure about yu being I don't know where your located.

Also, if you don't have any livestock or live anywhere near a cattle ranch or a sheep ranch or some type of farm, your fine. They wont even give you a second look for the most part. Wolves are predators, but they're not maneaters in contrast to lions or bears....especially a lone wolf.

Anyways hope some of my jibberish helps you out some.
God bless,
Archan

P.S. Just a fun fact, my uncle (Whose partially Native AMerican as well, though the tribe escapes me for the moment) had a 3/4 Grey wolf-German Sheperd hybrid...he was so groovey. Named him Kaya, and he was HUGE, I miss him :)

No, they aren't coyotes. I saw them once and one was pure white, and like I think I said, a friend saw one and it was black. Coyotes are never white or black. And they couldn't be stray dogs because when I saw them, I saw three and they all looked exactly the same except for the coloring. I think I also said that I heard one howling, and it wasn't a coyote's howl or a dog's. It sounded like a wolf howl from a movie.

It's a pack of at least three, and also there has never been a verified case where a non-rabid wild wolf has attacked a human. So I'm not in any danger. I've gone out at night to let out my dog and they seem to like to come up to the edge of the woods and watch me. I never see them, but I hear them. It's funny. I'll make a little noise and they'll take off. :P

There also isn't any livestock around here.

I'm going to call the wildlife officials. I don't want to call Animal Control--the "control" part just doesn't seem right.

Don't you love how shatterheart bluntly puts stuff straight. Oh and I also agree with everyone else contact the wildlife board. You could search what wolf prints look like and compare them to the ones you saw. Make sure you get a credible source though and not JIm and Janes wildlife adventure pictures.

So it's a pack, then you should be fine.... Hum, they're already watching you huh? Well, though it may seem funny and they may seem scared, I wouldn't push it any further. They are predators....and I liked the way *Varified* attack was said....that got me smirking. But anyways, yeah, they're predators, not man eaters, but still predators. A wild animal attack is still a wild animal attack...doesn't necessarily have to be a predator. People have been gorged by deer, gorged by elk, a wolf wont think twice if it feel threatened. So yeah, I'd still advise you stay close to home during the night and keep close tabs on your pets. Very close tabs.

I'm going to call the wildlife officials. I don't want to call Animal Control--the "control" part just doesn't seem right.

That made me smirk too.

My animals don't go outside at night.

Anyway, I called the wildlife department and I sent them pics of the prints (I did compare them to wolf + coyote tracks on a government website and they perfectly matched a wolf's prints--they were nothing like coyote prints). They haven't gotten back to me yet.

Yeah, they watch, but only when I've got my dog and they're obviously curious. They would linger around somewhere in the woods by the edge for a minute or so, then they'd trot away...:eyeroll:

About "verified", there is I think three people in all of North America who have treid to report wolf attacks but two of the times it was wolf hybrids (wolfdogs turned loose) and the other time, the behavior of the wolves was like that of rabid wolves as they had lost all sense of judgment.

But anyway, they'll obviously think more than twice about attacking. Wolf hunters, when they got wolves in leghold traps, would just break the poor wolf's neck with their bare hands. And there was a case where a shepherd cornered a wolf to club it and the wolf bit his arm and ran, but didn't even break the skin--it was just a nip.

Even if they have bitten people to defend themselves, that doesn't make them any more dangerous than your neighbor. Honestly, who wouldn't defend themselves if they were cornered by some crazy guy who wanted to kill them?

Little Red Riding Hood lied.

On the other hand, deer--especially bucks--are extremely dangerous when they want to be. Especially around mating season. o_O

Not to be argumentative. But that is the most foolish thing I have ever heard. You, a known defender of Wolves...calling Deer dangerous? How many deer, let alone Bucks, have you ever even seen within 50 yards of you in your whole life? Deer run like crazy...even during mating season. Don't just "cute up" the animals you like. I would far rather have deer around a group of children then wolves.

Actually, deer have killed more people than bears have. (I learned this surprising fact in my Wilderness First Aid class.) This is probably because people think deer are cute and tame, and they try to "pet" them... but deer will defend themselves with their antlers and very sharp hooves. They'll split your skull.

The moral of the story, boys and girls, is that wild animals are... WILD. Do not approach them even if they seem cute and cuddly. :)

Yes, but also realise the populations. Deer outnumber wolves and Bear by quite a bit. Thus your going to have more attacks from a larger group.

Shatterheart, I don't mean to be argumentative either, but it's really not cool to accuse me of romanticizing wolves or any animal for that matter. You seem to have a stereotypical view on wolf defenders and wolf lovers as people who romanticize them, but this isn't true. Facts are facts.

Sure, it's safer to have deer around children than wolves. The reason being that wolves have a high prey drive while deer do not (though a deer killed a child in Yosemite once). However, dogs also have a high prey drive, yet people gladly let children play with dogs.

http://www.dogbitelaw.com/PAGES/statistics.html#Thedogsmostlikelytobite

Despite the information in this link, people readily keep dogs, and with children too. Some people even get a dog for their child. But for some reason, these same people would be absolutely terrified if they ever saw a wolf trotting by.

If it's a stray be cautious but you are in no immediate danger. Wolves RARELY come into close contact with people. They regard us as threats and leave us alone. If it IS a stray it might be rabid, but you'd see sign of it. Otherwise it.

1. Left the pack to find a mate

2. Was ostracized

or it's just a stray. If it's a pack you have nothing to worry about.
