Expectations for a newly licensed series...

When you hear that your favorite series has been licensed (after seeing it in fansubs for so long) what do you look forward to in the official release? The improved quality of the audio\video? The extra features that come with the DVD, or the fact that it will be dubbed in English?

For me, I'd have to say that hearing a series in English is something I look forward to the most. After watching a title for so long through fansubs, it is kind of refreshing to see how the dub will carry the show. In fact, I always watch a newly licensed series in English first.

Along with the technical improvements, it is also interesting to see the slightly more accurate translations in the subtitles in the official release.

I have yet to see a series that was not better translated in the pro release... of course that's subbed. Case in point: The Azumanga Daioh fansubs were terrible in comparison, awful picture. Things were better with the official release

The fact that a poor subtitle translation can cost a professional company it's customers is definately a reason why they do a better job.

Though what is usually missing in the official release are the follow-along lyrics in kanji and the little translation\cultural notes the pop in through the subtitles.

I've also noticed on occasion that the official releases don't include as much swearing as in the fansubs.

This cuts both ways. I have seen a lot of completely unnecessary profanities in the fansubs, and as for the cultural notes, I have seen many that were flat out wrong.

To be honest, I've never watched a single fansub (mixture of not having a computer that could really handle a lot of downloading, not having the technical know-how to get it working, and being worried about breaking the law), so I can't really compare an official release to a fansub. That being said, I'm always really happy when animes I've heard good things about get licenced here, particuarly when it's licenced by a company I know will do a good job.
Now, if I only watched DVDs more often, I could justify buying more DVDs...

Which english voice actor will voice who. I like seeing what other series they hail from in which makes me intrested in the other series that they have done.

Well, I personally dislike the pro releases (the english track that is), b/c they either sound like robots, or the VA's fail to cature the origional character's feel, having a different tone of voice and trying to lip synch. They also like editing things that ruin the series *Cough* One Piece*Cough* then fail to release uncut versions. The other thing is they like cutting out some of the Intros and Outros, which annoys me. The subs are usually ok, the only issues being timing.
The same goes for manga, espcially when they translate the sound effects or flip the images, both of which mess with the art. (See ref: Bleach/Naruto by Shonen Jump)
