I agree, for better or for worse, dogs become quite attached to their owners. It used to bug me how my dog has to follow me everywhere and sprawl on top of me, but I spent a week alone when my parents went away and they took the dog. It was just me and the cat, and I hardly saw him for more than an hour a day. I never noticed how much my cat keeps to himself. I found myself missing the way that my dog keeps me company when I'm home alone, and the way that she keeps watch and starts barking if there's anyone outside the house. I feel safer with her.
Whereas cats can actually be kinda spooky when your home alone at night, especially whenever my cat stares up a pitchblack stairwell for several minutes like he sees something. Not that I'm bashing cats though, like I said earlier, I like cats and dogs. I'd say owning a cat is like parenting a teenager, whereas a dog is more like having a toddler or a preschooler.
