How do your parents respond to your love for anime?

I'm in Oklahoma and I say "mahnga". >_> It's because I study Japanese. But I say "ann-i-may" instead of "ah-nee-meh" like it should be. >_< Since everyone else says "ann-i-may", nobody would know what I was talking about if I said it properly...o_o

Oh, right, back on topic. I don't live with my parents anymore, but when I did, my mom totally didn't understand anime or j-rock. My dad kinda did though...sometimes he would watch some stuff with me and he didn't make fun of my j-rock fandom. :3

My parents don't really understand anime or manga at all.

They certainly don't concider it "evil" which I'm sure is a good thing, they both just concider manga for example "a waste of money." Why? Because I can read manga books in about a half hour maybe a little more. They really need to make them longer in my opinion.

I actually showed my mom one of my manga books that was a backwards kind. She actually thought it was pretty interesting how some where made to work like that. So that's a plus I guess.

My mom is somewhat cautious about it. She checks every one that I buy and rejects one's she thinks I should not have. I still usually read the manga because friends buy it and I borrow it from them. If I watch anime, she stands behind me for about five minutes, making sure nothing inapproitate happens.

My dad thinks all anime is Yu-Gi-Oh. And he refers to manga as "magna-doodle". He doesn't really know what it is, and he doesn't really care.

You know, it'd be interesting to do another of these in about ten to twenty years (supposing CAA still exists), and see if these numbers increase.
I get the feeling man kids will end up putting "My parents are bigger otakus than me", for hopefully obvious reasons.

They don't really care, but then again, I don't really let them know what I watch/read. XP
Like when I rented Trigun DVDs, I would do it during a time I could be sure most everyone wasn't around, simply so they would ask questions about the cussing (especially my siblings; my gosh, they go nuts on it...).

Yeah, I do that, too. I like to watch mew Mew Power, but neither of my parents know, my mom probably wouldn't care, but my dad would tease me to no end if he knew I watched a show like that. And one time I borrowed Sailor moon R from one of my friends, but I was sure to make sure that I was home alone when I watched it for the same reason. And I would rather not have my mom or dad come while I was watching and be all like "what's this? what's this? what's this?"

my parents dont really understand it and are kinda skeptic about it.they dont really go through the how to draw manga books i get (as heero yuy knows they can have some objectionable stuff) but i white it out anyway. they kinda worry about me because i have had a... erm... rocky past when it comes to the internet but i have changed my evil ways and am completely decent now, JUST FOR THE RECORD. thank you for allowing that little rant.

My parents think they're a waste of money. I agree though. 10 dollars for manga!? Crazy. I'm now trying to save money buy only buying a few series, and exchanging manga with my friends. ^_^

But my parents are overall okay with it. Mom doesn't like how I waste money with it, but she watches it with me sometime. Dad's okay with it. He really likes the anime with very nice animation and graphics. ^_^;

Eh...My parents really dont understand it and don't like it much and thin a lot of it is offensive and so it's tricky for me to find something they'll let me have. They're really cautious.

the point of understanding about Anime is that although they are cartoons, they are NOT kid centered. And that adults can enjoy it as well, as much as any western film. Take Monster for example, that will definately NOT appeal fo young kids, but older teenagers to even old people. Must like a movie that has a wide age range

Oh, of course. They know that it's not all kiddy. But, basicly, as long as it's not trashy or smutty or overtly gory or full of cussing, they're fine. My mom's even watched Noir with us before nad I believe she knows that it would be a show that older people would be interested too. She also knows thats a lot of it's trash too and full of bad content. And that there's anime that's not so full of crap. (If anything, she wonders why those annoying eye and still shots last so long, lol)

I think one time she had come across Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim *cringe* and commented about the cool animation.

my parents seem to be pretty cool about MOST animes. I mean my mom really hates some of the costumes (she got mad and thought jubei chan 2 was bad due to felicias outfit) and some animes the say the just dont like but overall they let me go about this hobby

Mom doesn't like it at all, but she doesn't flat out tell me not to buy. Dad has this stereotype in his head that no matter what, all anime is fatalistic, (and even if it's not it must be depressing!). It drives me crazy. He saw the end of the Cowboy Bebop movie, and he was spouting all that "so fatalistic/depressing" crud.

I was like, How can you think this is depressing or fatalistic??!! The bad guy died & The Bebop crew saved Mars. HAPPY ENDING!! -_- I gave this little speech to my mom about how I was getting rid of all my depressing/flawed animes (which I am) and that made her feel alot better, but for some reason she's still against what I want to purchase. *SIGH*

Being a librarian and strong opponent of censorship, my mom never restricted what I read growing up. My parents have always trusted me to make good decisions in what I read/watch, so they have never restricted me from watching anime. Of course I didn't really start watching it until I was around 13, so maybe if I had started earlier they would have examined it more closely.

By the time that I entered high school my parents were comfortable letting me watch just about anything that I wanted to watch, including anime.

The only time I ever had a problem was at age 10, when I collected Fleer X-Men cards. My best friends' mom made him throw out all of his cards, because she said that they were "degrading to women," then tried to get my mom to do the same with mine. My mom looked at them, but decided to let me keep them. I still think it was a good decision .

my parent's are so-so on it. they caution things but I've earned their trust because I always tell them about the shows to avoid or manga books to avoid and such. Somethings in anime they'll never understand...and my mom still thinks it's a fad....that I WILL eventually grow out of....yeah...right...>_>.

I tricked my dad into watching Endless Waltz with me....but he was so confused by it the whole time...I feel sorry for him. My mom thinks it's awful that I'm watching shows where the characters swear....not like you can avoid it much anymore.

Mom is funny sometimes though.

that happens alot. But they mostly let me chose what I want now and trust me. They don't really ask questions anymore. ^_^ I wish I could get them to like some animes...but hey. I guess I'll just ahve to be glad that I got them to see Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust *I think that's the name of the movie...* and that was waaay after I showed him the Gundam Wing movie. I think my dad is more open about the idea of it than my mom...but who knows?

my mom trusts me about it. She was a bit cautsious at first and stuff but I showed her not all was bad and like pokemon *twitch* And Dad, if anything, supports me watching/drawing it XD He does make fun of the shows I watch and the art pictures I get online because well...idk O.o; But he doesnt hate it or anything. ^^

My whole family is into Miyazaki movies, my mom and sister sat through an episode of Rurouni Kenshine, even when I wanted to watch something else, and my dad would probably watch FMA if he weren't so busy all the time.
