shocking experience

Postby desperado » Fri Apr 15, 2005 4:10 am

yesterday when i was working on my car (1960 thunderbird) in automotive class, i was adjusting the timing. weeellll when i had it running and another guy had a timing gun on the other side i was adjusting the distributor, i gave it a few taps with a wrench to loosen it up and move it a degree (was off by 3 degrees) and electricity jumped from the coil (it was a little ways so there was a flash) to my wrench then to me. i felt it run down my hand along the side of my body and out of my foot. while it did this it was like my muscles were tearing themselves up do to the 2 seconds of spasaming, it hurt like heck. dizzied me a little so i stepped back, said "dude that was crazy" then went back to work.

edit--- forgot to mention it was dc current so it wasnt bad though there was probably quite a lot of it (i think my instructor said about 1500 volts or something like that. i dont know)

Ouch, thats gotta hurt. When I was a lot younger, I would get zaped by our horses electric fence all the time. Why I kept playing around it... I cant tell you.

But, Im glad that you are ok desperado.

Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

Sounds like a good experience. Shocking, you might say. I wouldn't, but you might.

At least when some says something is "shocking," you'll have a better understanding of what that means!

yeah and dc is a lot better for you the ac. im so stinking glad it was ac but thats what most of the electricity is on cars
but i have had several annoying things happen to me with that car. hand got jammed between to shims on it, knocked my head on it a couple times under it, and had it leak on me in my hair working on it today. but i guess thats part of the fun, seriously its fun working on it

Okay, one Volt is bad enough, but 1500 OF HIM!?!

Actually, the thing that sucks about dc is u can get stuck cuz the electricity doesn't let u move while it's flowing (dc flows in one direction constantly). Ac is actually a little safer cuz it switches direction constantly and while it's switching it stops for a few milliseconds and allows u to let go. I'm such a scientist, lol.

Remember, it's not the potential difference that kills you, it's the current. But potential difference drives current, so in a way, volts DO kill you.

The threshold current for the human body is roughly 300mA. Ohm's law says that I = V/R, so a superconducting wire (the kind used in all the circuit homework) can kill you with an infinitely high current run by a 1.5V battery, right? Fortunately, no. All real batteries have internal resistance which prevent them from putting out an arbitrary current.

that'd be so great. I'd have 1500 visitors on my BLog everyday. Guarenteed.
And 1500 more CAA members, and everyone would...*stops and laughs hard* ROFL, everyone would loose debates due to majority rules, 1500 to 1. LOL ROFL

I'd never be right again!!! T_T

Hmm... electricity. Well, I have: licked a battery. *Ziiiiit!* And I have been around electric fences for a long time. *ZiiiIIIIiiiiiIIIIiiit!* ...But I've never been zapped by 1500 volts. Ouch.

The first time I zapped myself was on an electric fence at my Auntie's place. At first I only got a small shock, and I thought to myself 'that wasn't so bad...' so I touched it again. That time the shock was bigger. ^_^ I think it's something to do with the current... so at times it's really weak, but over the next few seconds it'll get stronger, then weaker again, then stronger...
Oh, and if you're visiting a farm, beware of this trick: someone will go up to an electric fence wire that's off, and will touch it. They'll tell you: "it's off. See, you try it." Once you put your hands on the wire they'll pretend to spazz and have an electric shock. -Just something you might have an opportunity to look out for in the future.

Again, 1500 volts? *Shakes head* I dunno what voltage electric fences are but I'm sure they're way, way less than that.
