Woe unto the Pretty Ones

Talk about anything in here.

Hmm...interesting topic. (Did I respond already?)

Heh, I was never really that conscious about how I look. Now mind you, I don't go around looking like the rag man. But I won't lock myself in my room because of one blemish either. Although I have been told that I have nice skin, I don't really do anything to "enhance" my beauty.

Personally, I feel I could trust another guy more if he met me in jeans and a t-shirt instead of a red-hot short dress with my business hanging out :eyeroll: So it's not the gift of beauty that's a curse, it's just people's attitudes and how people misuse that attribute.

As for me, I hold other characteristics in higher priority when I look at people, mainly personality. And I expect others to do the same when they look at me. :thumb:

[quote="termyt"]Here's what I've learned from this thread:

1) Beautiful people have problems because of their appearance, too.

2) SirThinksTooMuch is very attractive IRL.

3) Women don't like too much attention.

4) Women don't like being ignored.

5) SirThinksTooMuch is very attractive IRL.

6) Some people who may not consider themselves attractive are still attractive to some members of the opposite sex.

7) Holding doors open for people is still a big issue in the “gender wars.â€

I don't want to get embroiled in too much debate here, but I just want to say.
I know exactly how you feel.
The catcalls, the honking, that creepy old dude on the corner wanting your phone number. It gets so unnerving after a while.

No, for real, girls should be proud to be pretty. Instead of giving into the dorks who have no manners and saying "dudes are stupid to me so i want to get ugly" you should take back being pretty with style and flair and a backhand to the face. That's what I think anyway.
Godspeed.

Hehe some people say I have no sense of style. (I don't wear makeup, I don't have a specific hairstyle, and I wear t-shirts over long-sleeved shirts and baggish pants...:P) It's probably because I don't care. And the "today's style" stuff is all...you know...............yeah. :shady:

I've just recently started using a little makeup when I have time or feel like it. my little sister who's in 4th grade probably wears more makeup than me. And I always put my hair into a pony tail... add our school uniform and I don't stand out very much.

Usually I put my hair in a ponytail but lately I've been letting it down...it's super wavy and has a bunch of curls at the bottom and it tries to wrap around my neck. XD (snakehair of 7he d00m muahaha)

That's true, it does happen. But those kinds of things are talked about because they're noteworthy, not because they're common.

FWIW, adolescence is considered to reach up until age 24, and there is evidence that there are brain changes all the way up until then. Yes, people do mature at different ages (and some quite early), but it's food for thought.

Speaking as a male, I think that while it's our responsibility to keep our eyes where they should be (and our fault if we do not), Paul does remind us not to be stumbling blocks to our brothers -- a reminder that applies to our sisters in Christ as well. However, making ourselves *un*attractive seems in some subtle way spiteful, like a smart person trying to hide their light under a bushel by acting unintelligent, or a talented artist scrawling on purpose. Merely my faint opinion.

Ah yes, makeup. I never liked makeup on girls (or certainly not guys). I want to know whose idea it was that blue eyelids would be attractive. The only time a person's eyelids are blue naturally is when they're closed permanently. I dig the "modestly cute without makeup" look. Acknowledging (sp?) that a girl is good-looking is fine by me, but you'll never need a crowbar to pry my eyes away from her. Not unless she's juggling chainsaws or beating up Mike Tyson or something. Now THAT'S a woman! :wow!:

Wow. I finally get around to reading the thread and it's exploded into over 200 posts and about as many mini topics. :P

Impact Alberto, you are lucky to have a skin tone that supports both red and pink lipstick equally well. ;)

Just another comment on the girls dating people who don't respect them... Some personalities are more overbearing, and others are submissive to the extreme. I think that combination is a large part of it. Throw in emotions like wanting to be loved (and if the relationship started out better, like when the guy is wooing the girl and trying to get her to like him, it's easier to believe it will get better again) and fear of rejection, and it gets worse.

That's another reason why it's better to be friends first. If there's a friendship and understanding of the other person before you're trying to play into the boyfriend/girlfriend roles, it should be easier to know if the person's really like that, or just trying to impress you.

I think I'm at risk for that, actually. =/ I honestly have no idea what the boundaries are supposed to be for submitting and dealing with stuff in general in any relationship and when I just need to stand up for myself. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings or impose on others like people do to me. How can you find the right balance of being patient with things and knowing when you don't have to be? Someone today told me I'm too soft. -_- And that was when I was trying to stand up for myself too.

It seems like everytime I try to assert anything, I get shot down or it just makes things worse. It's easier to just accept whatever's going on and not make an effort for something that will just blow up in my face.

Anway... Be grateful that you are considered attractive. If it leads to more people noticing you, that's just more opportunity for God work through you.

This thread is so long, I'm pretty sure I've missed some points. I apologize if I accidentally go off a tangent.

I just wanted to answer a question that was in the lines of "Would you change the way you look to avoid attention?"

Yes, I've done it to protect myself. I grew up in an environment where young girls are always harassed. I've gotten wolf whistles and was sexually assaulted once eventhough I was wearing a big loose T-shirt and baggy jeans. It was unbelievable and outrageous. Eversince then, I concluded that a guy will attack a woman regardless of what she's wearing or how she's acting. I spent my teen years hiding my body in fear that someone would notice me and attack me. I was probably only 20 years old before I started to wear jeans -without- something additional hanging/covering over my behind. <-- yes, I was that paranoid.

Additionally, most of the time, female victims of sexual assault in my home country get the blame for the crime. As you can imagine, this makes me quite upset. The woman gets blamed because she just happens to look pretty or she dresses up nicely. When I say dress nicely, I'm not talking about Britney Spears or the fashion trend today. My home country is quite conservative as compared to the U.S. Wearing a body-hugging shirt or a pant/skirt above the knees can be considered indecent or 'asking for it'.

I guess I just wanted to say that some of us are lucky to be able to enjoy the freedom of looking good without constantly having the fear of being sexually assaulted especially if the criminal justice system protects them.

Now, don't get me wrong. I love my boyfriend, respect my brother and father and have great guy friends. I also think many CAA brothers are responsible God-fearing men. In the U.S, I've had guys tell me I look good/cute or ask me out for dates but never once, did I feel they were harassing me. But if I were to go back to my home country, I will indefinitely revert back to my "Beware, all men are enemies until proven trustworthy" culture. One has to adapt to survive.

Um, considering there was a whole page devoted to the picture in someone's signature, I don't think you need to worry about getting slammed for being on a tangent. XD

At any rate, wearing modest clothes is (in my opinion) not really an attempt to hide beauty that our good friend shooby was talking about. In my opinion, attempts to hide beauty would be purposely getting a bad haircut, not showering, stuff like that. Wearing baggy shirts and sweatpants is not (to me) an attempt to hide your beauty.

Yes. Calling attention to one's body was definitely not what I meant by allowing one's beauty to shine, and I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear.

i must say, this thread has reminded me of the story of esther from the bible, she whom the king chose above all the other women that he had to choose from to make his wife, he chose esther, and not only for her physical beauty, but also her unseeable beauty (the way she carried herself, etc), and God made her so beautiful so that He could use her to save His people, for such a time as this....

I mean when we think of old people we think of those loving folks who are wise and tell us stories of what it was like when they were kids. Hopefully the next generation of old farts will be the same. But i doubt that, they'll probly tell their grandkids...(if they know them)...how many people they knocked up.

ok... ... they are non-profit entertainers that seek and crave sexual attention without wanting to commit to a single person in a moral lawful manor.

Sorry, I got tired of being "nice" to everyone, I found out if you let people know what they're doing in a truthful manor, they're more likely to realize what they're getting themselves into.

Wheather it's right or not, Neither YOU nor I know. Jesus wasn't exactly the "butter-things up" kinda guy. And that's what I love about him. He's honest, Shatterheart is honest too, rude sometimes, yes, but honest with his feelings. Awsome.

I think that's what makes us christians such push-overs sometimes, we're always trying to be nice and sugar-coat everything. Sometimes it's time to stand our ground and be honest. I'm not calling them Non-profit whores as a christian, but as myself. It is my personal opinion. And if anyone is offended, They'll e-mail-IM me. I'm 100% possitive of that  , many do, and almost all the time we get into this conversation of spirituality and it ends up having a happy ending.

There is a good point hiding in there somewhere, but I think we can probably find a way to stop being pushovers without becoming offensive. I don't think either of those extremes either embodies Christ or is likely to teach anyone a better way.
