Commercials that make you go ...wut?!?

Postby Mithrandir » Mon Mar 03, 2008 8:56 pm

So this evening the wolf and I were watching a little TV while enjoying some homemade soup - until someone in commercial land said something that made both of us slowly turn and look at each other and ask, "did they really just SAY that...?"

The commercial was for a sleep aid (Lunesta, I think). The advertiser was speaking seriously and rattled off something like, "Talk to your doctor if you walk, drive, eat, or perform other activities while asleep."

We both kinda started, then looked at each other. DRIVE while ASLEEP?!?

Needless to say, I've since come to the conclusion that half the people who drive in my current town must be taking Lunesta, but that is not my point.

I have to ask... What other commercials have you heard that made you go ...WUT?!?

Ooh, I was thinking something similar about this one EPT Pregnancy commercial. I found it weird that they would not say the word... (I'm not sure if I can say this here o.o) *insert word here* like on NBC or something, but they would say it on Fox Family Channel o.o

It's the anti- depressant ads on TV. They warn that you might wanna commit suicide even more.

I noticed on one of the nutrisystem commercials, during their comparison photos down at the bottom in teeny tiny print it said "results not typical". XD Typically I see on nutrition ads "results may vary" not "results not typical". That one was just great!

There's this one series of ads for some Suzuki dealership near here. They've been parodying all kinds of internet culture with their commercials, and they have this one...

It's a screamer.

Seriously. There's like, this car that's just driving peacefully, and you're getting all these nice aerial shots and passes, and there's peaceful music playing, then all of a sudden...

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!"

...while this hideously ugly face pops up on the screen.
Then the Suzuki man himself comes onto the screen and says "Now that I've got your attention..."
I'm just sitting there, watching the TV like... @_@

I still don't see how they let him keep broadcasting that thing... :eh:

Anyone remember the Terminix commercial with all the cockroaches crawling all over the screen?
The part that made me go "what?!?" is the fact that many people broke their televisions trying to "kill" the cockroaches and thus sued Terminix for making the commercial that made them break their TVs. :eyebrow:
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Does that qualify as "people that make you go, wut?" instead? I'm not sure. :D Does anyone know if said law suitage was successful, though?

There aren't too many that usually make me think "What??!?". There is the occasional ad that makes me think "What on earth is it actually trying to advertise??", then they reveal it in the last 5 seconds, and I still think it was totally irrelevant...

Oh gosh, I remember those. XD I hated those commercials, because even though I didn't try to kill the roach, I still thought it was there the first time I saw it. XD Shock advertising FTL. XD

Yeah, drug commercials are strange. Like, there's the whole sleep aids "may cause drowsiness" thing. Also, notice how there are all these commercials for laxatives (sp?) and other such bowel and digestive problems during the dinner hour? I mean, my family watches TV with dinner, so it's rather disgusting hearing people talk about their personal problems while you're trying to eat. So it's like, "What? Why are they showing all this now?"

What I find hilarious are all those crazy warning labels, buuuut...that's another thread entirely.

Commercials for Lucent and BASF come to mind...

There was the infamous Quiznos Subs commercial with Spongmonkeys. I had never heard of Spongmonkeys prior to seeing this commercial. http://youtube.com/watch?v=aZrks-BPeLQ

Sometimes I like to roam about on Youtube and look for crazy foreign commercials...here's a Thai one about ceiling boards. (Warning: Avoid if you cannot stand seeing cute things die.) http://youtube.com/watch?v=u5EjqdZO9aE

And finally (this one's for you, Khaki), the Head-On commercial.

That car commercial his hilarious! I got pranked with that one and flew out of my chair.

There's another one which cracked me up, but I can't remember what it was advertising so I can't find it again! It was some kind of mental disease awareness commercial for something like Alzheimer's. It had this wilford brimley look alike saying: (mangled paraphrase) "Do you sometimes experience things that don't make sense? Or seem out of place? And you find yourself wondering 'did that just happen?'. If so, you're like the 1000s of others who suffer from ______ and this drug is for you. You deserve the help that we can give you. Because your a worthless sack of crap."

That's a terrible paraphrase, but they were essentially trying to point out this disease that makes you hear odd things and it was just so randomly rude... jeez, i wanna see it again.

I hate those VitaminWater commercials. Flashing text with some British dude shouting "TRY IT" a lot. I'm sorry, what?

Also, I saw that screamer car commercial on Youtube. Scared the ever-loving crap out of me.

Prescription drug commercials are bad in general. There's this one that's like two or three minutes long for some arthritis medication and it is the most boring commercial I've ever seen in my life.

Oh yeah! I just remembered: there was this one Super Bowl commercial with this luxurious mansion, this guy went to bed, saw some dark-colored liquid dripping on the sheets, flung back the covers, and screamed. He saw the oil-covered front part of a car, and meanwhile out in the front a (Mercedes?) drove away, almost as if it were sent by the "Carfather" or something. XD At first I was like, "Eww...what the heck is going on?!" but then I saw that it was only oil from a car and I'm like "Ohhhhhh...*bursts out laughing mildly*"

Any of the anti-drug commercials.

Which I'm pretty sure they are typically thoroughly stoned themselves when they make them.
