As of today February 4th as the traditional Chinese Calendar as the New Year Eve. As such Happy Chinese New Year and have a great Year of Rats this year.

Lao New Years will be in April

We celebrate both American and Laos New Year

Sometimes Chinese New Years as well

My brother in-laws uncles new wifely kids are Chinese

I think she put something together today, but I'm not sure o.o

But seriously, why is the Chinese New Year significant? Would someone explain it to me? (feels kind of stupid for asking, but has never had anyone tell her why each year is assigned a different animal and whatnot)

The Chinese animal signs are a 12-year cycle used for dating the years. They represent a cyclical concept of time, rather than the Western linear concept of time. The Chinese Lunar Calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, and is constructed in a different fashion than the Western solar calendar. In the Chinese calendar, the beginning of the year falls somewhere between late January and early February. The Chinese have adopted the Western calendar since 1911, but the lunar calendar is still used for festive occasions such as the Chinese New Year. Many Chinese calendars will print both the solar dates and the Chinese lunar dates.

Um, I believe Chinese New Year's Eve this year is actually the 6th of February.

The only special thing that comes to my mind is that in the Chinese zodiac, the Rat is the "first". Hence all other animals are "what comes after", if indeed one must put a beginning for a cycle (if that makes sense).

From my little understanding of the Chinese Zodiac the Rat came first only because he cheated in the race that the animals were having and rode on top of the Ox.
