I lived with a male cat last year (my roommate's cat Maverick). We had him neutered as soon as he was old enough. He never sprayed and got along somewhat ok with Pebbles (he liked to slap her in the rear end and run away). Male cats can be sweeties --just make sure you neuter as soon as he's old enough--once those hormones kick in, then he will spray even if you neuter him later.
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
