Tropes You Don't Like

Postby rocklobster » Mon Jul 05, 2010 5:56 am

Time to flip things around. Now I'll tell you the tropes I don't like.
1. Adaptation Decay--What's wrong with doing things like the source material?
2. Dork Age--a period of less than stellar and often stupid work.
3. Network Decay--a Cartoon Network should play Cartoons, not stupid Mythbusters rip-offs!:mutter:
4. Karma Houdini--except in Ferris Bueller

Adaptation Decay I agree with wholeheartedly.
Cannot Spit it Out - right, and the person you are confessing to never knows that you're about to tell them you're in love with them, even though you are couching it in terms that are pretty much only used for confessing feelings of love?! It was cute the first few times I saw it, but it's SO overdone.
Fanservice - of the sexual variety. I mean, I can take a little - and far more than I could when I first got into anime - but some shows take it WAY too far. And when it becomes the focus...I'm done. There has to be enough decent material to make the fanservice worth wading through for me. There can be innocent fanservice, which is just the author putting in something because they know the fans would love it, and that I'm fine with.
Fo Yay, Ho Yay, Les Yay, Bro Yay...did I miss any?! - more specifically, when fans of a show fabricate this out of thin air. There are some fandoms you just can't even get near because all of a sudden this one aspect is all the fans seem to want to goosh over. I've learned to just sigh and move along.
Fan Dumb - is connected to the above, sometimes. And people getting WAY too serious and sensitive about things that really...aren't all that important. Or, you know, REAL.
Ms. Fanservice - sometimes. When she is a purely fanservice character - or purely a moe-blob - yeah, that's annoying. Some of them go on to get some decent character development, so not ALL of them are quite as irritating, though.
The Scrappy - yeah, sometimes the fandom is justified in hating a specific character. Also The Replacement Scrappy.
Wallbanger - going episodes at a time building up to something that seems like it's going to be really deep, or emotional, or rewarding, and then pulling one of these is well...:bang: like the name implies, really.

The Wesley (aka a Scrappy who keeps coming back and saving the day)

Mighty Whitey (Dances with Wolves, anyone?)

Draco in Leather Pants (X/X fan fiction)

Narm (you could call it the opposite of Large Ham)

*Explosion goes off in the movie*

mechana2015: Does that answer your question?

Mighty Whitey- Not only Dances With Wolves, but... Well, almost any show you could put out there. Apparently, this now includes the Water Tribe.
Fan Dumb- I have been guilty of this once or twice, but at least I try.
Ms. Fanservice- Fanservice characters drive me up a wall. Fanservice itself, only if it interferes with the main plot. But to have someone that lives to show off her pantsu? No. Just no.
Executive Meddling- I cannot name how many shows I've loved that have fallen to this.
Viewers Are Morons- mix with Fan Dumb, stir, and....
Lowest Common Denominator- It's a neverending cycle. Shows get dumbed down believing that viewers are morons, smart people start turning off the tv, and then studies show that people watching tv are this. And shows are dumbed down again accordingly.
Development *alternative to Underworld*- We're still waiting...
Jump the Shark- Just let it die already!!!
Seasonal Rot- It got worse before it got better. Or did it?
Idiot Ball- and it's usually our favorite characters holding them.

I thought i posted in here last night

LowLowFantasy - acting like taking all the fantasy out of fantasy will make it realistic, but most of the time they didn't do the research.

They changed it, now it sucks - You know, there is something to be said for not making a sequal a 180 degree change from the original... consistency can be good!

I had 5 or 6, but... I don't have time now, so I'll do more later.

A trope is a literary device or plot point: pretty much anything that drives a plot or a character. If you have a story, it's going to be built from tropes. There's a website out there called tvtropes.org that's trying to describe all of them, as well as provide examples of where they appear in stories/video games/anime/what have you. They have names for them and everything. (Warning: That site has some rough spots on it, so watch your step. Also, it's Internet crack - you'll be hooked.) Tropes, in their definition, also include things like how a work was shot, things about the fandom surrounding works, or gameplay mechanics that appear again and again.

Anyway...

(foo) Sue - Write better characters. Or else.
Rape is the New Dead Parents - Trivializing felonies is fun!
That One Level (but not That One Boss) - Hard bosses: Good. Hard/badly designed levels: Bad.
The Wesley - The writers want you to like a character who is impossible to like.
-Shilling the Wesley - The writers see that you don't like a character that they want you to like, so they begin shoving said character down your throat.
Unwinnable (By Mistake/By Design)
We are loved even though we suck.

Psalms 37:37 (NHEB)
Mark the perfect man, and see the upright, for there is a future for the man of peace.

Adults are Useless (Really depends on the plot. If stuff is going around that adults should be well aware of but for no explained reason aren't, then yes, I hate when this trope is evident.)

Break the Cutie (Sometimes essential to character development, but still, it's not always easy to swallow)

-Status Quo Is God (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StatusQuoIsGod) (AAAARG! the worst ever! Another 4 years, another 8 gym badges, another lost League competition. Will it ever change!? Will it ever END!?)

LOL, sorry. Just really irritated with how Pokemon DP is ending its run, at the moment.

some more ones I hate. (And I agree with the "Status Quo is God" thing.)
It's Popular So It Sucks--I refuse to use this to decide whether I like something.
Unpleaseable Fanbase--This right here is what makes me embarrassed to say I like Star Wars.
Everyone is Satan in Hell--When people think something has un-Christian implications when it isn't intended to. Harry Potter is one example.
Animation Age Ghetto--It's depressing that people still think cartoons are only for kids despite the existence of anime and Adult Swim in general.

Babies Make Everything Better- People may laugh at it on the screen, but applying that to people IRL gets on everybody's nerves
Book Dumb- What's wrong with being smart?... Or even average?!
As Long As It Sounds Foreign- Just get a translator already!
Did Not Do The Research- and all the subtropes that go with it.
Translation Train Wreck- Blind Idiot Translations are funny, these are just unreal.

True Art is Angsty--I don't care what fans think, grimdark nihilism is not my cup of tea.
True Art is Incomprehensible--Let's call a spade a spade. The writer messed up the continuity...no the story in general and passes it off as mind screw.
Ron the Death Eater--I find this MORE irritating than Draco in Leather Pants.
Mary Sue--Not the character. The concept itself. It's as if it's now just a handy label for "character I don't like/not in my taste".

Face/Heel Revolving Door--Good guy becomes bad is fine. Bad guy becomes good is fine. But when they constantly switch sides, it's beyond annoying. Vegeta, this is for you!
Fallen Creator--When a favorite creator seems to lose his edge. Darn it, if Disney hadn't had its Renaissance, Don Bluth would still be making good animation!

Adults warping the concept of child innocence? Trust me, after being an elementary school target, this is nothing but the truth. Most of the kids were abusive in every way imaginable, and they all knew exactly what they were doing.

I dunno. It all boils down to environment, I guess. Where I come from, kids are not that nasty. What I don't like about the trope is that, it portrays ALL kids as little demons, which is also tantamount to agreeing humans are inherently b*****s.

Dan Brown... Sorry, I mean Dan Browned and its kin (acting like you researched something but really being a big fat emtehitana.) I'm fine with unrealistic science and what have you. I'm not really a hard science fiction fan (it's too restrictive) but when you ACT like your stuff is accurate and researched when it's really not... That is the worst.

A man is not a virgin. Only because so many people, even Christians, buy into it. It's such an evil mindset, I don't even know where to start.

Ho Yay / Les Yay. Not that there are gay characters in fiction, but that when there aren't, overzealous fangirls force the issue, finding as much absurd "proof" as they can.

The Coconut effect, or at least how it relates to computers and phones. Especially one particular Phone sound effect that is ALWAYS done wrong. Why is it, on movies, when someone is hung up on, they hear a dial tone? This is what happens with a traditional, non-cellular phone when you keep your line open when the other side disconnects. There's a few seconds of silence, followed by a piercingly loud, fast, annoying beep similar to a busy signal. Similar things with computers bug me too... Inkjets and Laser printers sounding like Dot Matrixes, "hacking" anything just by beginning to type (with no terminal or anything), etc...

And I'm gonna agree with Atria. Viciousness and violent selfishness is natural for Children. It has to be trained OUT of them.

This may not be a trope, but:
Bad Guy Turns Good, Gets Killed Same Episode.

I'm seriously sick of that one. They usually end up sacraficing themselves in some all-of-a-sudden hopeless situation.

Here's one I saw earlier today that really annoyes me.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ToughActToFollow

I understand loving the original installment of some series or whatever, and feeling nostalgic about it, but I really annoyes me when it seems like fans are so obsessed with the "original" work that they never give anything else after that a fair objective chance. I really like Yatzhee's quote at the top of the page.

The Barney. We all have something we don't like, but there are times it goes too far.

Reality is Unrealistic. This is like the ACTIVE version of the Coconut effect. NOt only does the real thing SEEM wrong, people get MAD about it. Particularly egregious when discussing movies based on real events. Earlier movies may be well loved, but some later, more accurate versions are derided (My pet case is "Bridge over the river Kwai" vs "To End All Wars" based on the same book, but one was full of Hollywood BS, and the other was a faithful rendition of the autobiographical book)

Space is Noisy. Ok, it's ok at times, but... Why is it that it's so RARE to see it portrayed realistically... In anime, for instance, I can only think of ONE time it's portrayed properly, and that's in Akira. Completely silent. (There's also the matter of the growth a certain character experiences making it so he can't hold himself together, and collapses under is own weight. Which is what would happen if he didn't cut off his circulation and so forth before that)
