I sure hope though.
With Dallas being gone and basically the entire band being different, I don't really see how that's possible. Much as I'd love it, I think the Underoath that made Cries of the Past/Acts of Depression/The Changing of Times is long dead. The new Underoath is good, but it won't touch any of those. I do really like They're Only Chasing Safety but it doesn't hold a candle to the old stuff, so I just don't see how they could return to the whole epic death-metal-hardcore-whatever that they used to be. In fact, in an interview with Tim McTague, he said that they don't even like that kind of music anymore.
However...they ARE getting harder. It's not the same style as on previous albums but they played one of their new songs when I saw them Saturday night and it was pretty rad. I dug it wholly and I hope they do more stuff like it. It was long and aggressive with lots of build-up, which I much prefer to the 3-minute bursts of pop-hardcore that They're Only Chasing Safety had.
I know it sounds like I'm trashing on They're Only Chasing Safety but I'm really not. I like the CD. I think I'm just subconsciously bitter towards Underoath for ditching Dallas Taylor and doing a 180 degree turn in their musical style. I think it'd annoy me less if they'd changed their name and stopped being Underoath. Underoath should have died a long time ago, considering this is hardly the same band.
