Sailor Moon

Postby Spirit_Wolf8356 » Fri Feb 06, 2004 8:46 pm

Okay, how many people out ther besides me are total Moonies? Sailor Moon was the first anime I was ever into and it will always be my favorite. I love it to death and I've been known to talk about it for hours. I made my dad watch a marathon of it once.

My favorite Scout was Sailor Jupiter. One, because she had the green fuku. Two, she used lightening. And three, my atrological sign is Sagittarius, who is ruled over by Jupiter. (Not that I'm into the whole, the stars rule your life thing, or anything, it was just a neat coincidence.)

Moonies! :thumb:

OOOOOO, it was my first anime too! I love that show, my favorites were Jupiter, Pluto and Saturn. I thought they were all sooooo cool! I have seen it all up to the Pegasus episodes . . . never go to see them. :( I own the movies and pretty much all the episodes to S.

I just recently got into it, and bought the 1st Season Uncut in December.

I liked Sailor Mercury the best. She's shares many aspects of her personality with me so I guess she was the easiest to relate to. I only saw 15 or so episodes and then completely lost interest. That was a middle school phase for me that I quickly outgrew.

Oh yeah... Um... I'm into it. It was the first anime that got me into anime. I've seem almost all of season 1, the doom tree in english, post-rubeus in Japanese subtitled, all of S subtitled, all the way to Tin Nyanko in stars and the last episode... I saw some eps of SuperS on CN and like 2 subtitled, but don't know much about that series except for the Mixx manga I had read (mixx's SM translation work was almost as bad as DiC...) Oh, and I've seen all 3 movies subtitled, and the edited dub of SuperS on CN...

My favorite good character is Sailor Mercury, my favorite villainess is Sailor Ironmouse, and I really love the cats (in Japanese only... Luna on the dub sounds like an old woman, and that really ruins the S movie where we're supposed to, you know, feel for her and such with her feelings for the astronaut guy)

My favorite movie is the S movie, and I don't like the R movie, but not for the reason you may think... Oh, and I quite love "Amichan no hatsukoi" so yeah...

I unfortunately, do not own any of it. I would like to, but sadly, the funding runs short. I've seen all of what CN showed and the three dubbed movies. I always thought Luna was so mean to poor Artemis. He was so cool compared to her in the dub. She didn't only sound like an old lady, she acted it.

Total moonie! Own both uncut sets. It was my first anime too. My name is actually taken from the S series...or maybe the Super S. One of the two contained the Red Ninja.

I consider myself a "mildly amused" fan. What that means is that I would have enjoyed the series much more if the characters didn't have to be fighting bad guys all the time; it would have been so much more fun just to see them live their normal lives. In other words, I'm not a Sailor Moon fan--I'm a Serena Tsukino fan.

Whoa, I *used* to be a SM fan back when I was in elementary school. Watched all the episodes to the end of Stars and read all the manga (even the 3 issues of Sailor V) but after that I quickly started on my shonen craze.

Watched one or two of the dubbed/butchered episodes and decided not to ever again. ^^;;; My favorite senshi would be Mars in the few seasons until SS and then later on Sailor Saturn in her Shinigami persona--the glaive is just the coolest weapon in the whole series XD

And now, I find myself watching the live action and not being able to stop... nooooo....

I'm still waiting for someone to release a box set of Stars. My personal favorite scout is Venus, but I'm so Sailor Moon. My friend and I in high school used to call ourselves Sailor Moon and Sailor V. We were both fun loving blondes. We both still keep cards of our characters in our wallets.

They could never show Stars on Toonami. They would even have to stretch a lot to do it on Adult Swim, I'd think. If you really wanna know the reason (in my thinking anyway), PM me or read the Stars manga if you get time. I'd tell you here, but I don't know how to do the little spoilers thing. :red: :brow:

I used to be one of the biggest Sailor Moon fans in (probably) the whole state of Oklahoma. ^_^; I watched it in a way that some might call "religious". Every day, soon as I got home from school, it was Sailor Moon on Toonami. It was the first anime I watched regularly. I've seen all of the dubbed first season many times, and also the dubbed R series, and owned all three subbed movies. My favorite movie was S, closely followed by R. If I saw something that was Sailor Moon, I bought it. I had a stack of the Mixx/Tokyopop manga.

Eh...the way I feel about Sailor Moon changed drastically about a year or so ago. I got rid of everything I owned that was related to it. Why? I don't really want to get into it here because it may start a debate, but you can PM me if you want. Although sometimes I miss that adorable S movie...poor Luna. *pet* And when I saw the uncut boxed set in Best Buy...I really wanted to have it ^_^; I've always wanted to know what the series was really like.

Please don't get started on the closed issue (and by that I mean telling other people what to watch), but there is a lot cut out from the Japanese version to the American Version.

The story is quite different, personalities are different, music is different, names are different, some episodes were left out, the show is less freaked out by death, and of course, the more controversial aspects. There are homosexual characters: Zoicite, Kunzite, Haruka (aka Sailor Uranus), Michiru (aka sailor Neptune), And fisheye. It is never once explicit (no kissing, no serious talk about it, only a whole lot of hints and dodgy statements) There is also a character who is not Homosexual, but is very confusing and makes you think he is. Basically, Mamoru is the only who showed him kindness, so he has tunnel vision and only wants to comfort Mamoru as Mamoru comforted him.

Besides that, there is anatomically incorrect nudity (like a Barbie doll). I mean, Laws of physics don't take effect even, so
there's no "bounce" except perhaps in one scene where they were discussing who should play snow white in a play... Funny scene in Japanese, but funnier even when you see that DiC still slipped in a euphamistic joke instead of removing that scene alltogether.
so it is even less objectionable than Ranma in that manner.

There is death, murder (though Cloverway did NOT remove that scene, surprisingly), and self sacrifice (suicide to save someone else) that was all removed, mostly from the first season. Actually, it was only removed when it involved "good guys" but if it was villains, they left it in... Geez...

So, a fan of the original show (who's seen it in subtitles or knows Japanese) will often have a hard time talking with a dubbie fan. Melody, I must say... Tsukino Serena? That's half the Japanese name, half the DiC name... In Japan, her name was Tsukino Usagi (the "Last" names come first in Japanese) meaning Moon Rabbit... Oh, so THAT'S why her room is full of rabbit related items? Mercury is Mizuno Ami, meaning "Friend of the water" (I think friend in this case is french), Mars is Hino Rei meaning "The ghost of the fire", Jupiter's is "Kino Makoto" meaning "Sincerity of the tree", and Venus is Aino Minako meaning "Love's (something)" The little girl is "Small Lady" and her human name is ALSO Tsukino Usagi, but they call her "Chibi Usa" because she's a small usagi. Her sailor name is Chibi Moon. Pluto is "(?) Setsuna" and I have no clue what that means, and Saturn is "Tomoe Hotaru" Hotaru means firefly, which shines bright and fast, and then dies dark (that represents her... She is the most powerful of the team, but she will die if she uses her power. She'll "shine bright" and die soon)

In addition, DiC left out a very important attribute of the Silver Crystal, which is to use it will kill the user as well, but they also gain a dying wish. They left that part out because that would mean the end of season 1 would not be to the liking of many parents... The last two episodes of season 1, the best episodes in the entire series in my opinion (though my favorite series alltogether is stars ) were chopped into bits and shortened to 1 epidode... About half of each ep was removed, and very important facts (like, what made the plot) were changed to be less threatening.

So, yeah, I would suggest any moonie who hasn't seen the original find someone who has the uncut first season, and watch it over the course of a month or two.

Red Ninja? Is that a "monster of the week" character? My favorite motw would have to be... No, wait, I hated almost all of them... All the ones that interacted with Hotaru weren't cool themselves, but it was funny when they like get all "oh, sorry little girl" and she goes "la la" on them and fries them... The Satun song scenes are my favorite moments in S.

Just for adding up to the name meanings, 'minako' is actually 'venus'. So her name basically means something like 'love of Venus' or 'Venus's love'. 'Setsuna' meanings something akin to 'silence' which is very fitting to her personality. And yeah, it's hard to accept the butchering done in the dubs....

Okay, Ink told me how to use the spoiler thing, so I'm gonna say what I wanted to say.
They'll never be able to show Stars because the Starlights go through an entire sex change and everyone dies. Major bad for ratings there. I mean, the Moonies who really wanna see it would watch it, but average Toonami veiwer wouldn't I don't think.
Stars is great... The humor matured a bit, and the sisterly usagi/chibi usa relationship is replaced by the mother/daughter type relationship between Usagi and Chibi Chibi. (even though, technically CU is her daughter, and... well, I won't spoil Stars for you) I wouldnt' trust ANY dub of SM. Not in Tagalog or spanish or french or cantonese or german... The thing with the starlights looks more threatening than it actually is.

It would be funny to see if Cloverway slipped in some stuff by accident on stars like they did on S and SuperS... On S, the "b" word (meaning female dog) showed up once, but they cut it out the second time it showed, and on Supers, they accidentally left in Chibi Usa topless (anatomically incorrect, mind you) when she was changing into pajamas talking to Pegasus. (I forgot his real name, but it's probably a spoiler anyhow) I wonder how many people caught those things. I couldn't help but laugh... That was just about as funny as the "talent" incident on the DiC dub of Sailor Moon R. Obviously someone at DiC was tired of all the chopping up they did, so they slipped in a little joke to allude to what was REALLY going on in that scene...

Another Funny Dub moment is when, in Japanese, Minako says "She writes in hiragana" but in English, Mina says "Shewritesreallymessyandhastoeraseandrewriteanditstilllooksbad" or something to that effect, so she has to rush the dialogue to fit the lips... It was so FUNNY! Just like in Speed Racer! All the lengths they go to keep people from knowing the show is Japanese... Sad, really.

Usa's speeches were never as bad as Mamoru's speeches. When he started talking, I just wanted to strangle him. He had no purpose, other than to talk and throw roses. Whoopdeedo. (Personal opinion there. Don't mean to offend.)
