Bureaucracies

Postby RedMage » Wed Oct 11, 2006 10:31 am

So, I went to the DMV to get my learner's permit renewed - again - because it expires today and my road test to get my license isn't until the 4th of next month.

A little background: I've had this permit renewed twice before, simply because I never actually really needed my license up until now and we were always too disorganized to bother getting it done.

After waiting fifteen minutes for my number to be called, I walked up to the counter and was informed I needed some other form of ID besides my current permit. We had to drive all the way home, get my social security card, and come back.

Then, after I filled out the forms...they told me I had to go re-take the written and vision tests before my new permit was valid. The same tests I took and passed three years ago. The same tests they never mentioned my having to re-take on either of the two previous occasions I had my permit renewed. The now supposedly invalid permit I used to schedule my driving test last weekend without a hitch.

That's right, I've been driving "illegally" for the past two years. Good thing I have a spotless record and haven't gotten pulled over for anything.

So now I have to go in this Saturday and retake the written and vision tests before I can even drive using my permit. Which means I have to reread through the rules of the road booklet. As if I don't have enough other things to do with two term papers and two exams this month.

I am officially having a very bad day.

How did you 'illegally' get your permit in the first place? (or rather, renew it?)

It would seem it is one of the cases below.
1. The rules have changed since you last renewed, and you need to do all the extra stuff like ID and vision test, etc.
2. They understand that your permit has actually expired, rather than being on the last valid day, and if the permit expires, you need to do all the extra stuff to renew it (I think that's the case here).
3. I'm pretty sure I was thinking of a three before... but I can't remember...
Everywhere like such as, and MOES.

Blah. Been down that road, though the only reason I needed to do all the darn testing again was because my permit actually lapsed. My parents couldn't take me to the Secretary of State's office in time. -_-

And LOL wing; I was thinking the same thing. :P

In Ga, we renewed our driving licenses by mail. All you have to do is fill out a form that comes in the mail and the they mail us a new driving license.

That maybe the reason why people down here crash and run over mail boxes and hit trees and stuff like that.

This is a permit, not a drivers license.

We have renewal by mail in IL, too.

(But we rock as drivers. ;) At least compared to the crazy people we have here in MI. 80mph is NOT an acceptable over-limit. >_<)

And wing, if you ran over a kitten, I'll harm you!

Aw, that stinks. I actually did know that you have to retake your permit test if you allow it to expire, but your right, it's generally not a very well-known fact. Really sorry about that. Hope the test goes well for you the second time around!
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Because the DMV has no idea what they're doing?

I live in Ohio. I don't know who Nate is.

Even among people paid to know such things, apparently.

Nate = kaemmerite

Anyways, I let my permit expire accidentally once, and I didn't have to go through any of that. Then again, I live in the south, where they give you a license even if you can't read or write your own name (dead serious).

Nate is kaemmerite, and he doesn't live in Ohio. But bureaucracy is everywhere, especially when it comes to the DMV.
