FMA: Who is your favorite character?

The real heart of CAA; discuss specific series, issues, and things related to anime here.

Postby Myoti » Tue Sep 26, 2006 5:25 pm

Ah, how did I forget Izumi? She's definitely on the upper end of my list of favorite characters. Her husband is by far my favorite side character.

And I have to agree again: how could I forgot both of them? Such great characters:

Izumi: "Now spit it out!"

"Or what?"

Izumi: "Or I'll spit it out..." XD;

Yeah, Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the few series that still inspires me to speculate heavily about the plot.

Now that I've gotten a bit more into it, I'd have to say I agree (especially now that I've seen the return of Hoenheim).

I picked Al. He's the most humble of the cast, and I identified with him a lot.

(Good guys: )

1. Maes Hughes (He's just goofy, but a great fighter when needed. I haven't been able to bring myself to watch all of episode 25, even though I've read the manga part. It's just... watching it... x_x)
2. Riza Hawkeye (Awesome sharpshooter/madly evil/really nice when it counts)
3. Izumi Curtis ("I'M A HOUSEWIFE!!!" Yeah, that's Izumi for you.)
4. Kaine Fuery (He's just cool.)
5. Black Hayate (How can you not like Riza's dog? Poor thing got pottytrained the hard way...)

Lust is interesting because of the way her character develops through the series, that when the end comes you feel sympathetic toward her. It's simply hard not to like her once you have seen the whole series.

Why isn't Wrath on there? (my favorite)

Well, my second favorite would be Riza because of her smooth attitude. I don't bean tough; I just mean laid-back. She owns Black Hayate as well, which is another reason...

Actually, I'm a big fan of Roy. That's one of the reasons I quote him in my sig.
For about most of the series, I actually identified with Scar. I actually thought I would've done the same things he did if I was in his shoes. That is, until he did the unthinkable and [spoiler] made a holocaust just so he could get a Philospher's Stone [/spoiler]. Pretty frightening actually.

I think the entire series would have been more interesting if they had shown us more of the background of Hohenheim and Dante and contrast what they might have been like originally to what they later became.

Yeah, see...
[SPOILER]That never happens in the manga. In fact, he's sort of "teamed-up" with Marcoh now after freeing Marcoh from the Hormunculi in order to get answers on them. So I still like Scar. In fact, he's gotten far more interesing in these latest chapters.

Now I wouldn't put it past him to possibly do such a thing, but he didn't in the manga. He's actually made quite a few "friends" now, which is strangely humorous. XD

In no particular order . . .

~ 1st Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye
She's very pretty [I know a girl that looks like Riza], an excellent shot, and the only person capable of keeping Roy in line. What's not to like? She also pulls off balancing being a soldier and a woman quite well.

~ Alphonse Elric
Al is just great. I identify a lot with him. He's humble, polite, and plays the voice of reason and straight foil to Ed constantly. Plus, he's a top-notch alchemist and martial artist. And he loves cats. YES.

~ Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes
Hughes just makes me smile. He's a shrewd intelligence operative when he needs to be, but then he turns right around and is a total flake about his wife and daughter. If I have a family, I will likely end up like Hughes. Plus, he carries push knives, which are really cool weapons.

~ Izumi and Sig Curtis
I love these two. They're both awesome on their own, but even better together [which is probably why they're married, no?]. Izumi has the whole "take-no-crap butt-whooping anime martial arts master" thing going on, but she's kind and caring as well. Plus, "I'M A HOUSEWIFE!!!" is just classic. Sig, like Al, is somewhat of the straight foil [Izumi and Ed are actually somewhat alike at times ~ except Izumi's cooler], he can flex with the likes of Major Armstrong ["a friendship forged of muscle . . ."], and he's a good husband. "KEEP YOUR EYES OFF MY WOMAN! : : beatdown : : And like Izumi, he takes no crap from nobody.

~Major Alex Louis Armstrong
How could you not love the Major? He just oozes masculinity ~ he fights hard and has an iron-hard physique, but he's secure enough to be emotional when he needs to be. Plus, he gives good hugs [if you like body casts, that is . . . XD]. He's the perfect balance between hardcore action hero and comic relief. That's not easy to do, but Armstrong does it with gusto [using secret techniques passed down the Armstrong family line for generations ~ naturally.]

~ 2nd Lieutenant Jean Havoc and Master Sergeant Kain Fuery
I like Havoc a lot. He's kinda the everyman soldier. He's good for comic relief, too [the part where he goes to meet the Major's sister was hilarious]. He can also use two .45s, which is pretty cool in and of itself [see vol. 9 of the manga]. Fuery is a minor character, but he's cool in his own way, just for being in the background and doing his own thing, as well as being a nice guy. Warrant Officer Vato Falman gets an honorable mention for being a master of random knowledge. XD

~ Fuhrer President King Bradley
[spoiler] Even if he is Wrath [manga] or Pride [anime IIRC] [/spoiler], I like Bradley. He, like Armstrong, can go from hardcore fighter to nice guy quickly. You've got to respect a man who, in an age of firearms and alchemy, can still be a threat on the front lines with a pair of longswords, which are difficult to wield one-handed.

I think one of FMA's strengths is its characters. There's somebody anybody will like or relate to.

"The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who’ll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that’s almost never the case." - Chuck Close[/color]

I do like Roy, actually, though I haven't listed him here. I think his flambouyant attitude turns a lot of people off at the beginning, and (especially if they don't read the manga) they aren't open to how serious his character is. So now, four reasons I like Roy:
1) His primary ability is simple and very effective. If only he could do something about the rain bit...
2) When it comes down to it, he's tough. Recall the stuff he does during his battle with Lust if you don't believe me.
3) He cares about people. That's why he's doing what he's doing, after all. When he talks about his goals in recent chapters, I was impressed.
4) Riza Hawkeye. I like their quiet relationship.

Agreed, UC, especially on the second point. I didn't think too much of Roy (aside from being a side character) till the point, which really made me start to like him, as did the later truth of how much he cared about his comrades.
