Misspelled Name

Postby ashfire » Fri Sep 15, 2006 7:16 pm

Ever have a time with people misspelling your name. My first name seems to be one of those names that can be spelled in different ways.
You tell those that you work with or write it out or its on official records how its spelled and they just spell it anyway they feel like it without checking.
Last year I was inducted into a fire department hall of fame for the many years of service and the many positions I held which involved my fire company and outside organizations which involve the fire service.
Well I was called forward at the convention meeting and handed my certificate of induction and sure enough my name was mispelled on it.
I had to wait 4 months to get it the certificate replaced and it place one in the fire station.
Well this year when the convention book was handed out my name was mispelled in it and my age when I joined the department was wrong.
I tried to get them to be sure that my name would be spelled right for the book but I never got to see the write up about me the was submitted to make any corrections.
I can only blame those in my fire company who will not take the time to check how to spell someone's name when its on my records or check the records for info.
I sign attendence books and spell and write my name the way I was told by my parents it was spelled.
The one thing is when it comes down to official records I fear of having problems when it comes to getting retirement money that I will earn from my years of service because someone misspelled my name. It also will involves income tax records every year for tax break money I get back for being in the fire department. :( :bang:

People misspell my name a lot, too. "Haley" seems like it'd be easy enough, but there's, like...10 different spellings of it. XD

I guess the best you can do is just politely correct them when they do it wrong...it's easy to think that you know the right way to spell a name when you really don't.

all the time... my last name is a disaster in pronunciation from the written or a horror in spelling when I say it. Our family can tell if theres a telemarketer on the line as soon as they try to ask for a member of our family and butcher our name.

My last name is very phonetic and in say, languages where grammer is consistant (like Japanese) it would be said perfectly. Even in that language since it would be spelled just as it is too^^ But for some reason, people change the pronounciation of like, all the vowels and therefore I've seen MANY variations of spelling it^^ Or if I mailed something away and they mail me back with a typo I'm like "I didn't spell my name like this -_-;" nor am I THAT messy of a writer or anything :/ *shrugs*

No one has ever misspelled my first name. It's Olivia, so It's pretty easy. O.o there's not too many spellings of it, so Im safe I think. But as for my last name.....it happenes all the time =_=

My last name is Kotter. EVERYONE tries to spell it with a c. It's irritating. I get mail for "Nathan Cotter" all the time. Or they mishear me and spell it "Carter."

My mom also used to get letters adressed to "Mary K. Otter." Heh heh. Otter.

My last name is hard to pronounce and spell. So I'm actually surpised if someone does say/spell it correctly the first time.

My last name gets the most trouble, I haven't seen many people mess with spelling my first name.
My last name is Italian, but my family and I pronounce it American, but I guess(cuz my memory is fading) it's hard for people to pronounce it from written.
Have faith
-From somewhere in the Bible, and I agree with it

-God will only give you what you can take. He will not overwhelm you.
-From somewhere in the Bible

-Your faith becomes stronger when it's tested.
-I saw a Chinese guy with a cross on his restaurant desk in America. That's so cool. You can do that here. Not so much China.

I've recently been learning that I don't need to be "loud and pushy" to Evangelize; just living it out is enough witness. The problem was that I grew up around strong Evangelists (Korean Christians) and they were really into getting people involved and setting out to Evangelize, and me being a a yes-man (or yes woman) I was into trying to convert people.
I've been learning this lesson over the years, but have been trying to be pushy. Now I'm trying to ease off.

Oooh, I've gotten some really far-stretched versions of my first name. Not so much for the last name, but it does happen.

Gee, I thought the only person who had the name of Kotter was Gabe Kotter on 'Welcome Back Kotter' played by Gabe Kaplan.

Yeah,my last name gets spelled different ways too. After awhile you learn to go with the flow.

People often leave out the "h" in my first name and mispronounce my last name. I have no idea how they can though. :\ It's only one syllable.

I honestly have no idea where people get the idea that "Russell" should be spelled with only one L. Once or twice, though, I've seen people correctly spell it with two L's -- but then use only one S!

The only trouble anyone has had in spelling my name [T.J.] is my best friend's 7-year-old sister. She asks me, "T.J., how do you spell your name?" I just give her a sideways glance and ask her, "Maria, how do you spell my name?" She replies, "T . . . J. Okay!" and goes off to do her thing. Silly child.

Often times when I tell people my last name, if I think they're old enough, I'll say "Spelled like the TV show." XD

But yeah, I'm used to people misspelling it. Every time I'm going somewhere to get a file under my name, I'll say, "Kotter, with a K." Of course, then 3/4 of the time I get, "I can't find it," and I'll say, "Did you look under K?" Then they'll go, "Oh!"

It's just the way things are... XD;;

people spell both my first and last name wrong quite often. however, i would say that my last name takes the cake since it's more prone to being misspelled.

This makes me laugh. No one has EVER gotten my name wrong...unless they just flat out don't listen when I tell them. My name's easy. First and last. But my poor sister...nobody spells hers right, even though it's not hard or unusual...

My name is Jordain(pronounced like Jordan) and people generally spell it wrong, or say it wrong. I spell it the feminine way with an "I", but guys and some girls spell it without the "I". I get called "Jordane" by people who know better, just to irritate me. It's frustrating when people you've known for years still spell your name wrong sometimes.

I mean, Rachel is my sister, and she still isn't sure how many H's there are in Jonathan.

And ashfire, I know what you mean. I had a hard time doing Teletax for a few years because the SSA had my birthday wrong.

Ugh... my name is Kelly; which is in my opinion boring, x3; but then there's also the mispellings.

Kelley
Kellie
Kelli
Kelleigh

I've also gotten mistaken for "Helly" or twice, which made people think that was just my nickname and my name was Heather! How does that work? I think I was also called Shelly a few times...

My middle name is also a bad one.. .

Cathereine, Cathrine, Kathriene, Catarina o.o, Kathrin, Kathren,

.. Catheriene. >.>

My last name isn't as bad. Kennedy. People like to add 'I's and drop 'E's in that one, but th real kicker is this: My name is Kelly Kennedy-- and I'm not one bit Irish.

My name is James. I go by Jamie. People write my name Jamei, Jaime, Jamey, Jayme, and many other awful ways. It's REALLY funny. I've learned to laugh at it now instead of being annoyed by it. I like discovering what new way people want to use to annihilate my name.

Are you one of the Scottish Kennedies then? There are a whole slew of Scottish Kennedies especially in the area around Carrick in Strathclyde.
I know because my maternal grandmother's maiden name was
Studdert Kennedy and I have been trying to trace up my Kennedy ancestry.
All I know is that they came some where in Scotland.
There are also Kennedies who are Jewish, but they're a bit rarer
I also have a sister named Cathryn so she had the same problem with her first name as you have with your middle one.So cheer up. :thumb:
