Reuniting with someone you 'kind of' knew?

Postby RineyX21 » Fri Sep 01, 2006 10:51 am

Does it feel odd when you unexpectedly meet a person who you know you've seen before, but hardly interacted with? Like a person that you sort of remembered at school, and that you know the person has seen you before, but you're not sure if it's a good idea to strike up a little "reunion" with them?

I go to a college where there are a lot of people that have been to middle and high school with me - people I've haven't seen for a very long time. Though it feels strange to stop them and say that you knew them before. It's like, should I say hi and mention that we went to the same school, or look weird doing it if they forgot who I was?

Another case would be meeting somebody that you 'kind of' knew in unexpected places (like in a grocery store). For some reason, I usually pretend I don't know them unless they somehow recognized me and mentioned it.

Now if it was a close friend I knew, it is definately easier to reunite with them. But other than that, it just feels awkward to voluntarily re-meet someone who may or may not have any recollection of you.

Has anyone experienced this?

Yeah it can be kind of embarrassing if you know who they are at the back of your head but can't quite recall exactly where you know them from. It's worse when they strike up a conversation and you spend all your time trying to think who they are and how you know them. When you get older it just gets more and more that way.

Talk about akward! Especially since until I got to high-school, I've been the awkward out-of-place nerd and "wierdo."

When I run into them, half the time it's like "Stop pretenting you actually talked to me" in my head. The rest of the time I'm probably scrapping my mind to remember them.
Now there are exceptions but most on the time it's one of those.

Or sometimes even more awkward is when you meet a new person and you find that you know someone that they know, but you only really know the person's name, but they try and talk about them and then that random person is your only point of conversation. I've had this one twice this week.

This happens to me relatively frequently, actually. I suspect it is because most people tend to remember me (for a variety of reasons, most of them good) but I tend not to remember people unless they had some significance to me. Most of the time they're the ones to strike up conversation with me and it generally doesn't become awkward.

Actually, that happened quite a bit today... I went to a training day that attracted Christian youth from all across the city, and quite a few of them I recognised (and perhaps couldn't remember where from...) and some of them I knew. But it was expected in that situation that you would meet people that you kind of knew in that past, so it wasn't as weird there.

But normally if I can remember who they are, I smile or nod or say hi if they make eye contact, or wait for them to start a conversation... XD If I recognise them, but I can't remember where, I'll be thinking the whole time of where exactly I had met them before, and usually use that as an excuse not make any communication. XD

Yeah, well Sam, apart from you and the others from our church I didn't really know anyone there. Lucky you.

But for goodness sakes TALK MORE!(lol)

So true. Though sometimes in the middle of all of that, you can't help but feel that the person has already seen and recoginzed you, which means you might feel guilty if you somehow create the impression of trying to ignore them!

That has happened a lot this year as I've had classes with different people this year, as I've changed levels. On many occasions, I recognize these people from the 8th grade for some odd reason. The funny thing is that they don't usually remember me from then, but from a later grade 'cause I was basically to myself that whole year. Anyway, I understand what you mean.

I'm sure I've been in such a situation before. I usually just play it cool like it's no big deal. Then again, that's my reaction to most things . . .
