"I HATE anime/manga"

Talk about anything in here.

Postby Bobtheduck » Thu Aug 24, 2006 6:57 pm

I get that a lot... "I hate those Japanese cartoons!"

My old roomate said "*person's* girlfriend (now wife) is into anime... I make fun of her a lot" and "Anime is all charging up and grunting and big explosions and it never gets anywhere" Yeah, that's right, he said that, but at the end of it, he pretty much said that to **** me off... He's very antagonistic... He ended up watching Akira... Hahahaha, and akira is grunting, and charging and big explosions! Hahaha!

He saw small chunks of "Now and Then, Here and There" (he saw the [button="hmm"]attempted rape, brutal beatdown of the rapist[/button] scene...) and "I, My, Me Strawberry eggs" (the scene where one of the two pervert guys lifts the girl's skirt with his chopsticks...) and I think he saw part of Castle of Cagliostro, but I'm not sure... He had a tendency to walk in at the wrong times... The worst scene in both anime (Well, the [button="hmm"]attempted rape scene and the homemade abortion attempt[/button] were probably equally disturbing in "Now and Then"...)

I'm just glad he didn't walk in on "Pyramid head and the mannequins" while I was playing SH2... He was disturbed enough by just the sight of Pyramid head when he pushed James off the roof of the hospital...

Tenshi no Ai wrote:Yeah I know some people that just plain hate cartoons. One of my friends (whom I hardly keep in touch with anymore), probably still does hate watching cartoons of any kind (yeah even ones for teens etc) and she also hated any type of fantasy movie that was in real life. Like saaay, Spiderman when we went to it.

I knew a girl like that... Here one big exception, for reasons that are way beyond me, was "Homestarrunner" I never tried asking her about serious, realistic animation (like piano, Grave of the Fireflies, or monster) but she was a brick wall when it came to anything fantasy (other than Homestarrunner) She was filled with contempt for Star Wars ("It's talking robots!") and Lord of the Rings ("All these people making a big fuss over a ring!") We got in a very big argument about it, and we haven't really talked since then and while I was there, she didn't like being around me after that point... I suppose it's because I thought of her as a potential girlfriend up to that point, but someone who can't get over that the stories in fantasy aren't about the dragons and the magic rings but they're about the real elements that form the basis of the stories... The actual human emotion.

Lord of the Rings has a lot of 'rules' about how the magic can be used--and often when the 'rules' are broken there's concequences to the characters (for example, the shock and trauma Pippin gets when he looks into the Palantir). Plus, the word (while gaurded by angel-like creatures that DO have 'godlike' powers) is definitively ruled by one god, Eru (I think D&D allows you to do such with your world--if you *want* to). And I think it's the issue some parents had with children acting as if they were the ones doing the spells.

That being said, I'm not a huge OMG D&D hater (and CERTAINLY not a RPG hater, video game or tabletop), I just can see where a line can be drawn.

I don't know if I came off sounding like I think there's NOTHING wrong with D&D. I think everything should have its limits. All I really meant to say is that I hate it when everyone jumps on the bandwagon about something being bad, but they never look into it themselves and thus don't truly know what they are talking about. Personally, I think anything can be bad, depending on how far anyone goes with it. Yes, even Pokemon, if it becomes an obsession. But the same could be said for sports (even actually playing them), soaps, video games... it's all in where your heart lies. Does it belong to God, or to that thing you're obsessed with? That's what it's really all about.

My husband mocks the big eyes, but in a nice way.

An acquaintance once went off on how much he hated anime because of too few frames per minute in the actual animation.

I read this book one time, basicly sopposedly giving a bunch of "biblical" reasons why pokemon was satanic and unhealthy for children. Some of the reasons were as ridiculous as "Kobotops slashes at it's victims with razor claws, what kind of message is it sending to our children?"

Yea brain surgeon.. God never made any with razor sharp claws that slashes at victims.. like.. grizzly bears? It was pretty pathetic..

Impertinance aside, it's probably best to steer the conversation away from a spiraling degridation into name calling.

Just kidding about the last one . . . really I am.

I'm not. =)

A lot of them are sports junkies, though, so it doesn't bother me.

Hah, so true. I think my dad has actually given example about things like that (though not in context with anime).

I had ~something~ like this happen. Not to such an awfully rude extent, but I was telling a girl I knew at church about CAA, and she said, "Christian anime...? Isn't that like...an oxi-moron?"

I've heard that one alot. It's actually rather humurous now to hear it. XD

Ha ha ha. Yeah, I hear you, Mave. The other day, Yumie and I were talking to someone and she mentioned "And we like anime" in a sort of aside/throw away manner and the person said

"You like anime!?" o.0

To which we said "Yeah."

"You like anime??"

"Yes."

"You like anime?"

I wanted to just say "Um, yes, I think we've established the fact that we do, indeed, like anime!"
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

If you watch some of the anime movies, they actually look like they are HD quality type animation along with Digital Dolby sound that could blast you away. The only drawback to that is most of the time the anime movies are short, trying to fit as much action and story plot into a short time span.

If he still gives that arguement, direct him to Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. No one I know can really argue on the point that it has bad graphics. Cause it doesn't. xD (Even a few friends of mine though the first 10 minutes was real life footage. O.o)

Ah, that reminds me of a story that approaches Mave's experience. I was in casual conversation with atheist friend A and closed agnostic friend B.

B: So, how do you reconcile anime and your faith? Isn't anime mostly about killing things and Christianity mostly about... not killing things?

A: Yeah, you're a hypocrite.

UC: No, you aren't looking at it the right way. Anime is fiction and-

A: No, I don't want to hear it. *wanders off*

UC: [Semi-lengthy explanation]

B: Eh, I guess that makes some sense.

A: *wanders back* You're a hypocrite.

He was mostly kidding though, so it wasn't quite as bad as it sounds.

Also, let me remind everyone again to keep tangents to a minimum. And by that we mean not comment on a side topic unless you have something exceedingly insightful to say.

He should realize that it already takes a good amount of time to make anime that runs at 15 frames/second (I believe this is the standard), and if it were animated at 30 frames/second like a regular movie it would take a ridiculous amount of time and would drive the price of anime way up.

How many DragonBallZ characters does it take to change a light bulb?
Just one, but it takes him 15 episodes to do it.

I don't hate all anime, I just hate how most of them can't wrap up plots nicely in one or three episodes. So I end up not getting into them as much as many of you have.

...I still like Miazaki movies, though. :)

haha darkside

Yeah I moslty get misunderstadings of from m parents and always call it Dragonball Z I mean every anime I am watching on tv. I remember in the recent past my step-dad says u "This Dragonball Z stuff again?" I found rather amusing since it was Naruto. But anyhoo I have only gotten greif from ppl from the past when anime wasn't as popular as it is now. I don't understand how anyone can totally dislike anime since it reaches out to a wide veriety of audiences I mean there are like so many different genres that can fancy anyone. And may of the plots and character developement are way better than alot of american shows and dare I say some blockbuster movies *gasp*. But yeah thats my two cents on it.

Just to broaden the discussion of this thread a bit, how many of you have friends who love anime/manga but absolutely hate comics from anywhere else?

I've met quite a number of people like that, though more on the internet than in real life and none that are particularly close to me. I find that sad, really, because often they make generalities equal to or worse than the people who say all anime is Pokemon, DBZ, or porn. Generally they've never heard of Neil Gaiman, Sandman, or Virtigo.

You can go back and read the entire conversation starting from page one of this thread. After six pages of conversation, it would be far to difficult for anyone to fill you in and it's a necessary hassle to read all the prior pages if you want to be part of a conversation.

Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;

Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.
