A anti-C.S. Lewis website...by christians

Talk about anything in here.

That site is a large lie. How could someone do such a thing?

Not even going to the site after reading the thread.

C.S. Lewis is a wonderful Christian author and the biggest literary influence on my coming back to the Lord after leaving Him in college. A Christian friend recommended Screwtape Letters, Mere Christianity, and another I can't recall at the moment. As a very logical person who was having trouble with the more faith-based parts of Christianity, Lewis' very rational, logical style of reasoning appealed so much to me and made me stop and consideer that maybe there was something to this Christianity after all.

Wow... I just finished reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and I can honestly say that there are no Satanic messages. It was a pretty good book. Could've been longer, though.

Glad you enjoyed it. The other Narnia books are even better. Especially The Silver Chair.

I'm getting too old for this sort of nonsense myself.First it was rock, then it was comics, then it was D & D and other RPGs more recently anime and now it's videogames.I think the Lewis attacks are a sign that these type of people are running out of straw men to attack for now.

Technically easter is, too... It is to be connected to passover, since that's what was happening just before Jesus was executed.

I have the feeling if I actually met this guy in person, he'd be anything BUT quiet, peaceful, and pleasant.

You wouldn't think so, but I read this article on Jack Chick from a Catholic film reviewer who met him at the premier of Chick's movie, and apparently Chick is a nice, grandfatherly guy. Which is hard for me to believe having read a few of his tracts (where evil people always look evil, laugh HAR!HAR!HAR! and the Pope is something akin to the Anti-Christ.)

And for all you Jack Chick devotees - please accept my apologies in advance - I don't mean to offend, I just don't care for his style.

Yes it is hard to know what people are like in reality but that doesn't mean they're wrong any less it only means that they're nice and wrong.

I didn't know Jack Chick was anti-Catholic. I read a few of those tracts years ago. Most of them are pretty old, aren't they? I think they may have been somewhat effective at one time, but these days a more subtle method is called for. The Chick tracts come off hokey.

Edit: Well, I just did a little research. I had no idea Chick had gone off the deep end about the Catholic church. Some of this stuff is really foul. It's a shame, the tracts I used to read were a bit rough but I never thought they were written with bad intentions and doctrinally they seemed solid.

Most of the anti-Chick websites listed on the Wikipedia page about him seem to be written from anti-Christian standpoint. I'm sure there are sites out there refuting his dangerous flights of fancy written by true Christians, a pity none of them are listed. Looking at this you'd think all evangelical Christians loved the guy.

They never seemed doctrinally solid to me, considering he wrote a tract about how Christian music was invented by Satan and that D&D will cause people to join witches covens.

The only Chick tracts I ever read covered the plan of salvation and that was it.

Jack Chick's stuff comes across as hate-speech and conspiracy theory. He knows all the Bible verses etc but he's not doing it out of a spirit of Love, but out of judgement and condemnation (and totally makes up or misinterprets many things).
The fire and brimstone approach may bring some people to Christ, but it won't be a healthy relationship built on love for Jesus, but fear that if they don't believe they will forever roast in the fiery pits of Hell!

His doctrine is definetly not sound, especially since the first and greatest commandment is to love your neighbours as you love yourself. Without causing arguements he appears to be an extremely bitter person.

Like I said, there was no subtlety at all in the one I remember reading. The plan of salvation was all there, but it was pretty much just presented as "Do this or burn!". I think it was called "This Was Your Life" or something like that.

Hey, whaddya know, it's on the Chick Publications website.

http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0001/0001_01.asp?wpc=0001_01.asp&wpp=a

As you can see, there's nothing in it that's factually/Biblically incorrect, at least not that I remember or that I noticed on a quick perusal now, but it's probably not a very effect means of spreading the Gospel.

The trouble is, I used to think this (well-intentioned but hokey) was as bad as Chick tracts got. Unfortunately, it seems they got much, much worse.

He's also extremely off-base about us Catholics.

I think there is too much glorification of Mary and the Pope (etc) but in general most Catholics are Christian.

Though as you can tell, it's still hostile towards beliefs that don't fall within his faith, such as his jab at Purgatory (which I am a Protestant and I believe in), so yeah.

But this is off topic and could turn into a theological debate, so probably best to steer away from this.

What jab at purgatory? I've looked at it three times now and I don't see anything about that.

This side conversation should end now. It is fine, though off topic, to express opinions about Jack Chick's work, but this discussion has ventured into denominational and theological grounds (at least, if I posted a response it would break the theology rules). We're glad that it has been civil so far, but now we ask that the discussion be closed.
