I really want to know... Could a 12 yr. old handle Inuyasha, Rurouni kenshin manga, or full metal alchemist? I am trying to persuade my dad to let me watch these shows.

Well, Inuyasha has nudity, so you probably wouldn't want that. Rurouni Kenshin has a LOT of blood, but it's not so bad. There's also some light swearing. Full Metal Alchemist.... Maybe. Also a lot of blood, and some light swearing. But the story line is also a lot more serious. You should have your dad read them at a bookstore or watch them on Adult Swim(but Kenshin is no longer on TV) and let him see for himself if he wants to let you watch them. Hope that helped.

My mom doesn't like Inuyasha at all and KBMaster is right about RK having alot of blood, but I believe that there is alot of meaning behind it, though some of it is not godly...like Kenshin looking for a way for atonement when we all know the right way :P.....and i dont know much about Full Metal Alchemist yet

I believe all three are fine, but I don't care when I see what other people may find objectionable.

So don't take my word for it or anything.

I watched Kenshin when I was that age. Honestly, the violence isn't much worse than some American movies. Inuyasha maybe. There's the bath scenes, the violence, and the fact that they translated youkai as demon in the American version. FMA is a GREAT series but it's very serious and there's some parts that your parents might find disturbing (ie the result of ed and al's failed human transmutation). On the other hand it's never without purpose. No gore fests just for the heck of it. The story deals with some big issues like war and sacrifice.

Personally I think those are all fairly clean series, but I'm older that you. What are your parents' standards on entertainment?

I agree also on Kenshin, and based on what little I've seen of Inuyasha, that shouldn't be too much of a problem either. FMA most certainly gets quite a bit bloodier and quite dark as well as the story progresses, so that would would be more up to discretion; as previously noted, it also contains some more serious and mature plots themes and story points.

Rurouni Kenshin (the anime) has blood and samurai-esque violence, but it's really not so bad, especially when compared to the manga. If you're asking about the anime, I would recommend it (with your parent's consent, of course), but I'd hold off for two or three years on the manga; it's far bloodier and more gory. And I would hold off for even longer on the OVA's; those are extrememly bloody.

InuYasha is...Well, there's blood and violence, nudity and a few "sexual situations" (one of the characters is the typical anime pervert), not to mention some religious issues (though most of them have been mentioned and explained by the posts above), but I would recommend it content-wise if your parents were there to watch with you and see if it's something they would want you to see.

FullMetal Alchemist has lots of blood and violence too, not to mention a few disturbing sequences, and a plot that might be a little too over-the-head of the average 12-year old (though I could be mistaken). I'd get your parent's permission before watching any of the above, but for the most part, yeah, I'd recommend them.

To begin with it would depend on how mature a 12 year old we are talking about.
Some may be mature enough to watch those shows listed while others may not be.
And another question that should be asked is is there a particuliar reason for asking the question in the first place?

The answer is yes. And the answer is no. There is >=1 12-y/o who could, and >=1 12-y/o who could not. Thus, application of this depends on the particular 12-y/o in question.

I go through this all the time with my 13 year old cousin.. can she watch this.. or not.. her mom always asks me if its ok.

in my opinion I would say yes to kenshin.. even though there is blood.. there really isn't much killing. kenshin saves a lot of poeple. and there are some good points in the show.. but like I said this is my opinion. She saw it and it was fine, but I agree with Radical Dreamer you should deff. wait to see the movies if you see the series ;)

Inuyasha has a lot of killing and nudity scenes.. some episodes are ok but overall I really wouldn't recommend it to you.

Fullmetal alchemist has a lot of violence, the first half is a mixure of some seriousness and laughs... but the second half if pretty much just real intense. Not to mention a lot of depressing scences. I guess you could say... sad intense moments? yeah that'll work .. anyway I didn't let my cousin see it, cause I knew it would be to much for her

well, if you're asking if you can handle the MANGAS for these three titles then...
rurouni kenshin - i got tired of this manga after volume 5 but i was eleven when i started reading it. if you can handle some violence and blood then it shouldn't be that bad for you. just be warned that there's some mild swearing.

inu yasha - i've never read this manga and i never plan on reading it.

FMA - definitely one of my favorite mangas. it IS pretty violent and deals with some pretty mature themes however, it's VERY clean in terms of nudity and sexual content. so once again, if you can handle some violence and blood, then it shouldn't be much of a problem for you, though it does depend on how mature you are. and once again, be warned. for there is some swearing in the manga.

now if you're asking about the ANIME then:
rurouni kenshin - never seen the anime but from past experiences, the anime is probably not as bloody and violent as the manga. however, it is not for me to say anything since i've never actually seen it so yeah.

inu yasha - same as what i said about the manga.

FMA - the anime isn't as good as the manga IMO. however, it's still pretty good. violent, yes, bloody, somewhat, language, some mild swearing (depending on if it's english or japanish w/ english subs.) nudity and sexual content, pretty low. however, there is some that is pretty surprising and there are some mature themes. great anime though. if you want to know more, just check out the anime review.

Well see, here's the thing. After volume 6, the Kyoto arc starts, and the Kyoto arc is more violent in the manga than it is in the anime. The amount of decapitated heads, detached body parts, torsos separated from the hips and pinned against a wall, and one scene where one character practically smashes another character's head between his hands makes for some pretty violent and graphic content that I don't think an average 12-year old would be comfortable reading. The language kind of fades away as the series progresses, but it still remains very violent and pretty gory for a 12-year old. I would definitely recommend the anime here (especially for the Kyoto arc); it's got less blood, less swearing, and is more 12-year old friendly, if you ask me. Read the manga a few years from now, though, it's definitely a good series! :thumb:

Most everything said here needs to be said. I won't go into Inuyasha because I abhor the series.

However as for RK and FMA. Sexually wise, they are VERY clean. Save for the character "Lust" in FMA who appears in sultry and sensual dresses. Rurouni Kenshin violence wise is ok. I mean, the main character doesn't use a weapon that slices or what not but other characters do. Once it gets into the Shishio Arc is when the violence turns up the notch. FMA surprised me with the violence. There is alot of blood, alot of violence, and alot of fighting. Not to mention several disturbing scenes involving corpse's, transmuation, etc etc. As well, FMA can be borderline "occultic" due to it's inclusion of some almost occultic refrences (like sacrifices and such). It's not to bad.

However, RK and FMA can be very funny and light hearted as well as great morals. Kenshin is seeking atonement for his past sins and feels that dieing will not help atone for the lives he take. He helps the young pickpocketl, Yahiko, to change his ways and live nobly. Kenshin influences characters he comes into contact with and help change thier lives around for the btter. Ed and Al are both trying to find a way to restore them back to thier orginal forms, both sacrficing themselves to see the other one better. Ed, more then ever, wants to see Al back to normal. Even at the cost that he doesn't become normal himself and vice versa. As well, the brotherly connection between Ed and Al is very admirable.

The manga for the 2 series is considerably more violent and blood but I would reccomend those as well.

One series I would reccomend a 12-year old watching is Someday's Dreamers. The show is very clean, not violent, comical, and cute. I enjoyed it alot and can watch it with my sister without feeling "should she be watching this?" I highly suggest looking into this series.

Another series I highly suggest is Last Exile. It's has violence but involves, for the most part, dog fights and such. Only three or four times do you openly see blood and it's not bad at all. It has a very good storyline. Hardly any sexuallity. Only once scene and that lasts...what...3 seconds? And the language is decent. I really highly suggest this series as well.

I second Last Exile! That was an AMAZING series, plus it's clean. It should be mentioned though that one of its bigger themes is war. It can be a little violent, and there is one scene later in the series that is a little twisted. I would suggest watching it with your parents. It's the type of show adults can enjoy as well since the themes in it are more mature. At the same time, it isn't quite as dark as FMA becomes.

I third Last Exile! Favourite series. Quite clean, amazing animation and character. Great worldbuilding and story. Epic is the word I would use. It's PG in Australia, but then it was reclassified as an M15+ rating (a bit much if you ask me).
It has some violence, very little bloody violence and even then it's not over the top, or even gory. There is a little language (but barely any) and one sexual related scene (the offending clevage shot) but that's pretty easy to ignore as it's only 2 seconds long.
Otherwise it's a very clean anime.

okay. though i said that i got tired of rurouni kenshin by volume 5, i read all the way through the series (mainly because i didn't have very many mangas to read.) but this is simply a minor note that has very little to do with the subject.

Beck, you can edit your first post, so you don't have to post three times in a row.

Also notice that the offical RK rating (rating on the DVD) is 13+. Basicly it's PG-13. There's also a review of it under anime reviews.

Well to begin with one should never say something like "I will never read or watch
manga or anime x."especially when one is only 13 as you can never tell.Your tastes might change when you get older,besides 13 and 14 year olds are still too wet behind the ears to know much of anything of what they really like yet.

(A note on the RK anime - I'm pretty sure the review here is done for the TV, CartoonNetwork edited version. Since this is no longer shown, I don't think it applies. There is quite a bit of cursing in the unedited version (e.g. the DVDs), worse than the manga, of which some families consider more than mild. A great resource I found for finding out content for the first two seasons is Sakabatou/Zanbatou's CN edit list (found at the bottom). It lists all edits made by CN when they showed the first two seasons.)

(I second, third, fourth, and fifth Last Exile. There is some slight "artistic nudity" (e.g., nudity, but everything is covered), and some very slight language, and it is just wonderfully written and animated.)

I can't tell you a thing about the RK manga, however:

I saw Inuyasha and FMA -when- I was twelve. Nothing in it gave me any problems. Yes, FMA has plenty of blood and such, but I really couldn't have cared less.

Really, niether series has much objectionable material the way I see it, but I'm not sure you could convince touchy parents of this. If it helps, I don't really remember any nudity in FMA. I haven't seen much Inuyasha but all the nudity I've seen in there is of the pretty innocent "ZONG wrong door!" type, and isn't detailed at all.

Mitsuki_lover: I've been reading manga and watching anime half of my life. I think I'm well aware of what I do and don't like.

The fact is I can guarentee that people's taste change and grow over time.For example when I was 13 I would have said,"I'll never listen to any music by
The Beatles!" and when I was 23 I would have equally said,"I'll never read any manga or watch any anime!"
As I have gotten older I have A)begun to appreciate the Beatles and B)learned to love anime and manga.
Perhaps one day I'll even learn to tolerate liver,but let's not stretch it too far!

I havn't read Rurouni Kenshin. But for Fullmetal Alchemist I would have to say yesh. This is not an extreame show although it doe's have some blood and mild language but what doesn't nowadays? Fullmetal Alchemist is a deffinit yes in my opinion, other then Edward's opinion on God. Inuyasha is... yeah. Inuyasha will be harder to convince your parents to let you watch or read. Between spirits (and not the good kind), demons, brief nudity (for the show, don't know 'bout the manga) and other crap in it, it's hard to say. Anyways, hope I helped! //_^ Hope you have good luck with your anime troubles!

Mmmm, I think I will disagree about FMA being appropriate for a 12 year old. I have a younger brother, and I wouldn't let him watch it. Mainly because the theme is mature,
with the philosopher's stone being created by the mass murder of humans, and the homgulous who eats people, and the multiple scenarios where attempts to bring humans back to life through the use of alchemy fail horribly and end in the creation of grotesque monsters, etc.
I know for myself that some of it's themes didn't settle well with me, and I can't really imagine them settling well with a 12 year old. But ultimately, you know him better than we do, and you will have more understanding of what sort of things he can handle than we will.
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

I just gave the answer out of my opinion since I started reading it and watching the anime at 12 myself.

i ABSOLUTELY agree with that. however, it also highly depends on how mature you are, even at twelve years old.

personally i think you need to be a little older to watch FMA. like the rest of you i think the plot isnt meant for those of a younger age. full metal alchemist while a good show and has its funny parts most of it is full of murder, rebellion,and war. the ishbala masacre is an example of all that put into one really. my point is tho with all that happens in this anime you need to be mature enough to at least understand what is going on. i think that a 12 year old (depending on how mature they are) may not understand all taht is happening in the show and could even possibly be influenced by the violence. not to mention FMA isnt exactly a christian anime. the main character is athiest and shows it a lot of the time. As for inuyasha...it doesnt quite have as serious of a plot as FMA and its really not that hard to understand. As long as the person realizes that the demons arent real, other than the occasional cussing i think a 12 yr old could watch it. i think someone above said that it has breif nudity in it but its not as bad as it sounds. They dont actually show anything. i can only think of one account where they didnt cover up but it wasnt detailed..it looked like he was wearing skin tights or something. i have only seen a handful of ruroni kenshin episodes so i really couldnt tell you on that one.
