Samurai 7 (spoilers)

Postby SnoringFrog » Sat Aug 12, 2006 6:03 pm

ANybody else watch this? I've seen the first 6 discs. I think it's really good, and probably the best animé I've seen in a while. I've also seen the 1953 live-action black and white movie. which was great as well.

My favorite character would have to be Kyuzo, he rarely says anything, he uses two swords, and, of course, he's really good. I really liked the how the emotions were portrayed when Kateshiro made his first kill. Also, I think Ukyo's character is pretty interesting. The things he's planned are crazy, but they do seem to work, to an extent.

I'm watching it right now. I'm up through episode 19 right now, where
Ukyo is declared the new emporer, and Kambei is awaiting execution.
Pretty good show for the most part, IMO.

Yes, I have also seen both the old black and white movie and the Anime series. I really like both, but I wished I would have seen the anime first, because it would have been more interesting.

I really liked how the anime picked up and went on with the characters and I am glad I finished the series.

If you havent seen it yet, the 1st ep. is all you need to see to get hooked. :thumb:

I have the first five discs so far. I really like the show, particularly Ukyo's development.

It's very nice - toward the end it kind of adds a second arc that I'm not as fond of, but it's still worth watching.

Of course, I kind of like that even though they played around with the characters a bit, and even though they added the whole imperial connection, they were able to keep the same ending scene.

I've been watching it on the IFC cable channel, Saturday nights at 10:30. I will probably pick it up when it comes out in a box set. It definately is a good series.

I've been getting it from Netflix. How many discs are there in the whole series? Does it stop with the 7th one?

I just finished off the last disc on Sunday. It was a great series! There were parts that were very sad, but realistic...

I loved Kyuzou. He was my favorite character, even though he didn't talk very much (part of his charm, really).

One of my favorite scenes was:
When the two wounded Bandits come and talk to Ukyo and he tells them he's been giving orders to both sides. The Bandits get mad and get all ready to smash Ukyo then WHAM! they're blown away by the main cannon while Ukyo stuffs his fingers in his ears. I laughed so hard the first time I watched it. Ukyo's reaction was better in Japanese imo. The "Uwaaahhhh" at the beginning of his sentence was so great.
What did you guys think of the dub vs. sub? I thought that they did a great job with the female characters, but not so hot with some of the male characters. Ukyo was one of my disappointing ones.. His voice in Japanese is so childish/playful, and yet still pretty menacing when it needs to be. The english voice just sounded... normal.

I never watched it subbed, I'll have to do that with disc 7. My dad prefers watching everything dubbed so he doesn't have to read the whole time, so that's how I normally see things.

I loved that part too.

In sub vs. dub, I have to say I prefer watching the dub...but that's just me. I like how Kikuchyo sounds a lot more mechanic/computerized than the Japanese version. But Kyuzo sounds better subbed.

Whadja'll think of the awful animation in the first half of episode 7? *laughs*

The movie is the Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa. (Kurosawa is honored in the opening credits.) It's a black and white movie made in the 50's, and is set in feudal Japan. The series doesn't follow the movie directly though, which pleased me.

I've just finished volume 6 now ^o^/ It's going to be a sad parting.

Anyone else surprised by
Kirara falling in love with Kambei instead of Katsushiro?
