Cockroaches it is!

I'm sure many of you saw the other topic about me either getting a snake or Hissing Cockroaches. Well, we've (my dad and I) decided that we just plain don't have enough room to house a snake, so I'm going to have to go with the roaches instead. I'm still pretty happy about it. I've made a post in an invertebrates LJ community about it and have been doing some research, so I've been getting alot of good information. Unfortunatly, no pet store near here sells them, but some guy (or gal; not quite sure^^) on LJ said they'd be more than happy to send me some if I just pay shipping. Problem is, I don't know what I should get: male or female? The person said that a female would probably be gravid (pregnant), and I don't know if I want lots of baby roaches. However, males can be aggressive towards each other I've read, but I don't think they can hurt each other. Though I kind of want a female or two, considering that both my cat and bird are male. I dunno'; what do you guys think?

Roaches!
*dies laughing*
Well, if you're into that, more power to you! How many are you intending to get? I'd think getting a pregnant roach is a bad idea...but hey, whatever...

Though the thought of baby roaches makes me shiver, I think it's cool that you're finally getting them! Still, I'd go with two females, since they're the calmer and less territorial gender in most speceis. Anyways, glad you're getting them, and good luck! :thumb:

Hey, I'm sure roaches have feelings too, and make good, low maintenance pets, provided you don't let them out.

But anyway, if I were ever to get a roach, I'd get a male. I suppose if you get a female and end up with little roaches, you could introduce them to a pet tarantula. ^^;

Get a male and a female. Have them mate, then you can sell baby cockroaches!

Or even better! Raise them and become a cockroach rancher!

Or get a chameleon instead. Only problem would be trying to find it each morning.

I'd say get a male and name it Papa. XD

Or more seriously . . . if you want more than one, a female is probably a good bet, since it will likely come with more little roaches inside. I'd probably prefer a chameleon, but it's your choice, not mine. ^_^

The whole male teratorial thing is a bit over rated if you ask me. They say the same about getting pet roadents and I've owned a montage of various rats, hamsters and mice for years and never had any male on male problems... In fact the only problem I've ever had was a between female mice funnily enough.

If you want to diverse your pets genders then I's go with that personally.

Well, that usually depends on whether the animals have lived together since they were in the pet store or not. In other words, don't introduce one male gerbil to another thinking they'll get along great, because most likely, the dominant male will chew his way through the barricade you put in their cage and attack the new male. I'm speaking from experience here. :lol:

I think I'm going to get three males instead. Females are usually gravid, and once they're impregnated they can have babies for life, supposedly. If things go well, I might get a female later :)

Just don't let the cat near them. Cats will eat roaches.

I for one have always wanted a big hissing cockroach (they're the bigger kind right??) THEY'RE SOOOOOOOOO CUUUUTE!!! However... If you do plan on getting females just make sure that you can afford to take care of the babies. Buggers can have quite a lot I hear... you may have to separate them so they don't eat the young too.

I considered getting a pet tarantula a little while ago... but they have such a fragile exoskelleton I was afraid I would be too tempted to cuddle it and accidently squash it. O.O
