An anti-C.S. Lewis website...by christians

Postby Rocketshipper » Sun Aug 06, 2006 8:09 pm

I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this topic in, but if it's I guess it can be moved.

Anyway, I was hanging out at the livejournal community "Fandom ****" reading a topic about Narnia and found this link in one of the comments.

http://www.blessedquietness.com/journal/homemake/cslewis.htm

It's an extensive website that tries to prove that C.S. Lewis was actually not a christian at all, and that his books and stories are actually filled with faulty theogy and ocultic paganisit elements. The site also has links to websites that analyize and condemn the writings of J.R.R Tolkien for the same reasons.

I looked through the rest of the site and I honestly have a hard time believeing that it;s really a serious site. I mean, they have a section that says ALL computer games are evil, that Easter and Christmas are both evil pagan holidays (I've actually heard that one before else where too) and a section that seems to label all contemporary Christian music as evil (I say only seems because that section keeps crashing, so I can't read all of it. the quotes at the top of the page seem pretty clear to me though) There is also a section about "evil eyes" that compares the eyes of some political figures and celebrities (like John Lennon, Hilary Clinton, and Condaliza Rice) with the eyes of people like Hitler and Rasputin.

Anyway, as soon as I saw this site I really felt like it was something I wanted to bring up with other Christians that I know, because everytime I see something like this it just gets me so confused, what with seeing something that is often praised by Christians suddenly get bashed and taken apart by other Christians.

What does everyone else think of this?

That's either by someone who is a very hateful 'Christian' or just by a non-Christian who knows a good deal about that stuff. There are parody sites about Southern Baptists (disturbing and false stuff) and things like this are possibly similiar in being biting satire. On the other hand it could be the real deal like a Jack Chick thing or something. Unfortunately you can't change people's minds but it doesn't leave the world with the best impression of what a Christian is, does it?

I give this site no seriousness. Their grammar skills kill it all.

Kill it with fire. CS Lewis was a fiction writer. It wasn't like he was trying to explain every last detail of the Bible. It's just alegorical.

I thought about that, especially when I saw their "Evil Eyes" section and their section on "Tax Rebels". But then there is the stuff about Easter and Christmas, which I've seen on other sites a few times, so I can't figure out if it's supposed to be serious or if it's satire or whatever.

O_O? Amazon.com has websites? lol

ok, this site has GOT to be a satire or something. I can't imagine how anyone could seriously write something like *that* (points to the link). Being fat is evil?

Lewis' honor with swear words. Why do you even bother mentioning such inane garbage as this website which has so lost the power of reasoning that it considers similarity in eyes an actual argument for similarity of character? Most assuredly, if C.S. Lewis wasn't a Christian, he certainly wouldn't have fought tooth and nail so much of his life defending the truth of Christianity. If this blockhead had a little imagination, he would have realized that in Narnia, "The Great Magic" stands for God and his ability to create and give power to create miracles. I'm going to be blunt - Christianity in the West is a mess right now, and in the chaotic factionalism everything, including the Bible, is bashed by some Western Christian somewhere, particularly among those who are on the far fringes of theologically conservativism or liberalism (not to be confused with the political orientations).

Ugh, yeah, don't even bother with people like that. If that site is for real, and not a satire, then it's written by the kind of people that really, really bother me. Those who think that any music that isn't found in a hymnal is evil, those who have no concept of freedom in Christ, and those who are rediculously legalistic. Just don't even waste your time with people like that. e_e

I wonder if the creator of this website was even aware of CS Lewis' nonfiction classics like "Mere Christianity," "The Great Divorce" and "The Screwtape Letters." Or had read the accounts of people who knew him like Sheldon Vaunakeen's "A Severe Mercy."

I'm suspecting it's more like the author thinks fantasy and magic=evil

on the site the author goes through and pulls quotes out of most of Lewis' books, including the ones you listed, and compares them to bible verses to try and show that his theology was faulty.

We have discussed this website to death at a CS Lewis site I frequent. I've seen it before and this site is very judgemental. It passes a lot of judgement about Lewis and especially about his wife, Joy Davidman Gresham out of context. That alone faults their logic. Also they say all Catholics are going to hell; that alone should give any Christian a red flag warning. :(

Right, most "Christians" who hate C.S. Lewis do so because of his beliefs regarding Purgatory and levels of sin, which are of course rooted in Catholic theology. Since to some "Christians" Catholic = Satanic, since Lewis held these beliefs he is automatically going to Hell.

As you may notice by me putting "Christians" in quotes, I think that is absolutely absurd and these people need to quit being like the Pharisees.

During the middle ages, the servants of the law could not arrest someone inside a church. In the Old Testament days, when Adonijah did wrongly and was afraid of royal wrath, he went and laid hold of the horns of the altar, and he could not be touched. These are pictures of the kingdom of heaven - if you look at someone and seek to find sin, you look through the eyes of hell, and will surely find through the eyes of the flesh sin, for all men fall short of the glory of God. Yet if you would look through the eyes of God, you would see no sin. By that declaration, and by all of our agreement with it, God makes each of us into who he sees us as.

But if any would spread disagreement and strife among the brethren, he is in that moment serving not heaven, but hell, and must not be heeded by the brethren.

Not too long ago, when the Roman Catholics were considering declaring somebody a saint, the office which argued against this was known as the Devil's Advocate. This is a very apt name, as anyone who makes it his purpose to point out sin is serving the accuser - satan. Thus it is appropriate to ignore such hellish websites.

If a man be flawed, then what? Is any yet so perfect that he need not the blood of Jesus? If not, then what purpose pointing out the flaws of another, when we ourselves have no fewer? Rather, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things, and not on that which Jesus died to cover.
The cake used to be a lie like you, but then it took a portal to the deception core.

Kaligraphic makes an excellent point; now allow me to make a few more:

1. I am a long-time lover of C.S. Lewis's books of theology, philosophy, and poetry. The man was an Apostle of God and a writer of the first order.

2. Yes, Easter is a pagan holiday, celebrating a diety by the same name, though I believe the latter is spelled "Eastre". The Egg, the Maypole, and several other traditional Easter symbols (Though the Easter Bunny is sadly absent from that list) are metaphorical references do various ideals which escape me at this present time. However, the event was much similiar in spirit, as it was considered a time of re-birth and celebration. The date we celebrate Christ-Mass on was once the saturnalia for Mithras, an ancient god much celebrated by Roman legionarres.

3. This being said, in no way are these holidays evil in and of themselves. The Church, instead of trying to establish a new day, saved time and took old ones, offering good alternatives to Pagan feast days and observances. Christ was actually probably born sometime in or near Febuary, or later in the year. (We arrive at this conclusion through the interpretation certain scripture that references the sheperds out with their sheep. Traditionally, later in the year, sheperds would stay outside, but earlier, in the winter and cold, they would stay in caves. just a fun fact.)

4. This whole thing is probably a joke. If it isn't, however, I do believe that I should paraphrase another good englishman, and I hope you'll all join me is saying this...."Go boil your silly bottoms, you silly low-minded pig-dogs! Your mother was a goat, and your father smelt of Elderberries!"

5. There is no point five. I just thought I'd bask here in my own levity for a moment. Ok, basking concluded. You may now return to your regular viewing station.
With your doubt, all is comfort

But don't worry about it.

I have strong reason to believe that [that site] is indeed legitimate (i.e. it was created in all seriousness). Even if it does sound almost as phony, sarcastic, and hopelessly unintelligable as one of bettybower.com's outrageous spoof articles.

You shouldn't believe everything you read online.
I know of a kid who wrote about how everything said in spanish was evil and that it killed people(lol) and how Zues would kill everyone with lighting bolts.
The kid almost seemed serious and believeble sometimes.
But if this guy is older than 60... then that sorta makes since but how come he's so smart with conputers and thiese things.
He's seems too stupid and smart for me to realy believe he's that old.
But it could be... but most likely if he's serious he's probly realy that old. lol

Oh good grief, what an idiot. :bang:

*sigh* People like that just make me so mad...I can't stand it --- I mean, C.S.Lewis?? For crying out loud!

What I thought was funny is when he made a big deal about the word "a--" being used instead of the word "donkey" in one of Lewis's books. Perhaps he should flip to the pages in the Bible where Jesus uses the same word in the same context. :eyeroll:
