What Do You Think of When You Look at the Moon?

Postby Lluvia » Mon Feb 02, 2004 5:18 pm

There was a time that whenever I looked up to the night sky, I'd be filled with a feeling of disheartening, as it was so awe-inspiring, grand, and overwhelming, it would overawe me merely to contemplate its existence, its magnificence, and why in the world it hovered over us. But after I truly became a Christian, I gaze at the night sky and merrily admire God's artwork, and thank Him for giving us such an exquisite sight... But most of all, the moon catches my attention, and I think of how before the foundations of the earth, the Lord created that golden-gray majestic orb, and long to soar up among the stars, and soon enough, befall lost in their beauty. ^^

What do you think of when you look at the moon?

The sky can truly be a source of encouragement.. whether it be the awe of the multitudes of stars and the passing glow of the moon, the hope of a new sunrise, or the fulfillment as the sunset turns to dusk. It really is an amazing gift. ^.^

I really don't know what I think of when I look at the moon, but when I go out and look at it on a night when it's full, I feel peaceful.

I never look at the moon, so I don't really think anything. On the rare occasions that I do look at the moon, I think about the fact that people used to believe that moonlight could drive you crazy. ;)

When I look at the moon, whatever emotion or will that I currently feel at the time becomes strengthened. This includes all positive, neutral, and negative thoughts. The moon's light is actually light reflected from the sun. I guess it also reflects whatever I feel when I look at it, for some reason.

Yes, Lluvia, I also think it is a majestic orb.

When I see the moon, or take time to look at it, it is usually because I am on a walk, and thinking about - stuff. You know, all that introversion. Sometimes I apply symbolic meaning to it, determined by subjective thoughts that are somewhere in my mind, and depending on the shape of it at the time. I love walks at night, and the moonlight is wonderful time for searching your soul or time with God. Some of the best prayer times I've had with God have been on walks at night. Okay, I'll stop now.

Yeah, that and it also has to do with my name, but then my name has to do with my custom status, and so it's kind of this cyclical... continuity sort of thing. Anyway, this post is going to get me busted by the bunny-trail police, so I'll say "The moon is wonderful" and check out. Thanks for asking though, Lluvia, and yeah, I'm studying Espanol, so I know your name's meaning as well. Cool, very cool. *runs from mod's swinging mallets*

Like others here I don't just think or feel one thing. When I was little I use to look to the sky in awe, telling myself one day I'll be up there exploring and discovering new things. I'd still like to think that I'd be able to actually go to the moon and view the world God made for us but that is no longer on my to-do list :( At times when I look up and see the moon I really don't think of anything in particial, save I do start crying at times, when I start to think of my loved ones that I've lost. At other times I'm just curious, who are the other people looking up at the same moon I see? But as always I cannot help but be reminded of the power of God, he made all this for us, all of it declares the glord of God.

"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handiwork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge." - Psalm 19:1&2

But I've gone a bit off track and started talking clearly about the night sky in general. But I am a bit envious of those who have been able to look at Earth in space. On one of the videos we are watching in Bible one of the astronauts said that up there, you can't deny the existence of God.

Um... enough ramblings from this ickle llama taco for now?
"Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
and things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art; to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul."

I actually receive a different feeling when I look at the moon versus when I look at the stars. When I look at the stars, I begin to get that realization others have mentioned of how insignificant, physically at least, I really am in the grand scheme of the universe. How the stars I see are such a tiny portion of the vastness of the universe, and how far away each one of those stars is--I can hardly comprehend it, and I feel a step closer to eternity. It's strange, I can't see the stars where I live now, in town, but I grew up out in the country and took a night sky utterly filled with magnificent stars so much for granted. Now when I go home, I appreciate the night sky so much more fully.

As for the moon, I feel comfort rather than insignificance when I gaze at it. It is much closer, more intimate, than the stars in the cold void. It is what brings me feelings of peace, and at the same time often brings a sense of adventure, or exhilaration, when I partake in those rare excursions at night, be they walks, bike rides, or even a car ride on a warm summer night with windows down.

I am alwasy awed when I look at the moon or stars. It hits me that the God who created all of that beauty can down to earth, and endured slime like me, only to die for us. I'm floored whenever I think about it. Just that anyone would die for me, much less the MoonSmith Himself. ^^ Then I always get into a quiet, reflective, "elf" kinda mood.

I try to get up and watch the sun rise every morning and every time I do I stand in awe at the beauty of the Sky Painter's work . . . but when I see the moon there is only one thing I think of . . . werewolves!

When I look at the moon, I think of... howling.

Actually, the moon has inspired me to write a couple of poems:
"Journey" and "Hand to Hold."

So, I guess if you read them you'll know what I think of when I look at the moon. :)

I couldn't have put it better myself Luvia! The moon is very beautiful. Have you ever noticed how once in a while you can see the light of the moon form a cross? Isn't God awesome?!

I think of a cookie. A big yummy macaroon cookie that I can pull out of the sky and eat. Mmm... moon... :) I also think of the Wallace & Gromit episode "A Grand Day Out".

I think about a lot of things... the mystic beauty of the night... the awesomeness of God's "lesser light to rule the night"... think about how people have actually walked around up there and left footprints... I relive childhood memories from when my big sister had little me convinced that there was actually a "Man in the Moon". For a while, I seriously thought that there was a guy who lived up inside the moon.

Sometimes, I think of it as an eye looking down upon the Earth (when it is full), like the eye of God watching us, or maybe like a big cat's eye. Seeing the moon surrounded by clouds, set within wispy clouds like fur made me get my "It looks like a giant cat's eye" thoughts... and I made up a new creature for inclusion in the sequel of my fantasy novel (if I ever get more written on it).

I made up, for my parallel world, a great creature that is a guardian of a desert, the "Moon Lion". He appears out of the clouds sometimes. He has a crown of horns and antlers, a diffrening number almost every time he comes down out of the night-clouds. He always has one eye open and one eye closed, and the open eye is ... the moon.

My brain may be weird, but sometimes it's fun. I drew an oekaki drawing of my "Moon Lion" once.

Here, here!

When I look at the moon I say, Awhoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I'm a repressed werewolf, what else can I say? *hehe*

[size=84][color=seagreen]YOU SEE

You see into the deepest part of me ---

beyond the fog I hide behind.

You cast your light upon the shadows

that stretch like cobwebs in my mind.

You ease the pain when I am hurting,

and morbid visions from my past

pierce into the realm of Reason

as though I danced on blades of glass.

You grant me strength when I have fallen

and, once again, I've lost my way.

You take my hand in Yours and lead me

into the promise of a brand new day.

You bring order to all my chaos,

yet set my well-laid plans awry.

You place me on a firm foundation ---

then give me wings so I can fly.

You sand away my roughened edges

and polish all the dullest parts

until I stand before Your presence...

a newly-sculpted work of art.

You see into the heart within me,

right through my motives and selfish will.

And yet, in spite of all You see

You say You love me even still.
