Makoto Shinkai's Latest Project: 5 Centimeters Per Second

Postby Mangafanatic » Wed Jul 26, 2006 5:16 pm

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Hear Ye! I come bearing news of the man who created "Voices of a Distant Star" and "Beyond the Clouds, The Places Promised in Our Early Days"

Makoto Shinkai, the man who I say will fill the place Miyizaki-san has vacated [via his retirement :waah!: ] as Japanese lead animator, has released trailers and posters for his newest movie, Byousoku 5 Centimeter (5 Centimeters Per Second). Or, perhaps I should say project. Apparently, the "movie" is actually three short films which are somehow connected (The tag line for the film is "A Chain of Short Stories about Their Distance".) You can see the poster here: http://www.cwfilms.jp/5cm/index.htm , and a teaser is available on this site: http://5cm.yahoo.co.jp/ . Apparently, the film will be released next Spring in Japan. I know practically nothing about this movie, but the teaser has me really excited. I adore Makoto Shinkai's animation, and his stories are always so touching. Plus, another Makoto Shinkai movie means another Makoto Shinkai sound track, which, from the bit we hear in the teaser, is another spectacular piano score from Tenmon. Osaka <3's Tenmon. XD

Just thought I'd pass that along.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I've only seen parts of his films, but of those parts I really loved the animation. I'll be looking out for this one.

Please, there are lots of directors much better than Miyazaki, and yes, Shinkai is one of them. : )

Can't wait for it. Though I wonder if every single thing he does will be about long-distance relationships. He should get a bit of variety.

Well, that is true, but I'm excited about this one because it seems that it's a straight up slice-of-life story. In the past, his stories have seemed to be slice-of-life stories that have been derailed by a somewhat unnatural sci-fi element. Nothing from this trailer makes me think this story will suffer from that. Which makes me excited to no end. So, lack of sci-fi-edness=variety!
