Ok so I got talked out of a rifle....

Postby desperado » Sat Jul 22, 2006 10:30 pm

A while back I had posted a poll one what rifle to buy, but things have changed.

One I needed a laptop for traveling I will be doing, and secondly I live in the midwest, its flat as far as the eye can see and you cant even hunt with rifles. My dad originally was against the rifle for the very reason of the the flatness and the only truly safe place to shoot a high powered rifle being at a range.

Anyways I have been thinking and a shotgun would fit the bill perfectly. Nice for clay pidgeons (recently got turned onto this), hunting, and of course much more viable then a rifle for home defence.

My freind owns a saiga .12 gauge, nice shotgun, fits me perfectly, tough as nails, and its less then normal (for a .12) kick is fairly nice. Cons weird magazine reload and semi auto shotguns are touchy. Big plus is its right at what I want to pay 200 dollars plus shipping. Another plus for being based off of the korenchisnov (sp definetly) design. I have also been suggested the mossberg 500, a cheap reliable pump action.

Anyways anyone have experience with either of these or have a different one to suggest, or should I just save the money and buy some fancy knife to keep myself busy?

A 20 foot barrel? That's a big weapon!

I your just shooting clays, why don't you just get a cheap Remington 870? If you really want to be frugal get an old two barrel shogun.

If I was buying I'd get something like this. http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=52864392

Dunno, I only have a snub nose .38 for defense. But I think if you can't really go hunting with a rifle in your area, I'd probably find the best 12 gauge I could to shoot skeet with.

Hm. I've seen the Saiga and it is indeed cool, but I hear that pump-actions are more reliable and forgiving. You need to keep a semi-auto good and clean or it gives you problems. However, the reduced recoil is always good, and the Saiga gets cool points on principle [a 12-gauge Kalashnikov = yes]. Plus, there's the price issue. However, for reliability, the pump is the way to go. It would be a difficult choice. I'd probably lean towards the Saiga just because it's that cool. Keep in mind that you will want to keep it clean [clean after every outing, including and especially the internals]. I don't think you could go wrong with either one.
