Getting Internet?

I may be getting my own computer soon (from Dell), but along with I would like to get Internet (thankfully my parents don't seem to mind anymore ).
However, I'm not sure how to do so, as, for starters, there is no phone jack in my room (I think there was, but it's torn out or something).

Now, the family computer (which has our internet and the... DSL, modem thingy... not so tech-wise in this area yet o-O ) is in our living room and my room is actually the nearest to it, so is there a way I can "connect" to it from mine? Possible using a wireless connecter or whatever?

either wireless or a multiport router and an ethernet cable run to your system. Though you would have to check if your service allows for multiple machines/IP addresses, this may add an extra fee per month. the right router can also hide both machines behind it to get around that, further configuration and forwarding would be needed though.

If you buy a wireless router for your internet connection and a wireless modem for your computer you can hook your computer up to the internet wirelessly. Otherwise you can buy a regular router and LAN (Local Area Network) card (although your computer probably already has a LAN port, in fact it probably already has a wireless card if it is a laptop) and hook your computer up using a Cat-5 LAN cable long enough to stretch from room to room. You can buy all the supplies you need from a computer store like Best Buy including 50+ foot LAN cables, and most routers have instructions on how to set up a home network.

Alright, I'm bringing this back up. After talking with a friend, he helped me a little more on all of this and also stated that because of our Alltel connection, they won't charge us for another computer using the same connection (yay!).

I'm still sort of confused on the router part exactly.

The back includes usual DSL port, USB, and Ethernet port. So, when getting a router, do I connect from the Ethernet port or something else entirely (I haven't gotten a router yet [or even the computer yet...], and I'm not entirely sure which I need to get)? And no, I'm not going with Wireless (there was some reason my friend told me not to, but I forgot why now >_> ).

If you get the router no charge extra charge will show up, without that you'd need 2 or more static addresses (thats all they offer I think) at $5 each per month.

From the walljack a normal phone cable will connect to the SpeedStream modem; an ethernet cable will then go from the SpeedStream into the wireless/wired router, and from the router it will go to your computer by wireless or another ethernet cable.

The speedstream series is very easy to use, only two or three pages within it need to be checked to make sure it's working right

I'm writing this from my new notebook connected to the internet via wireless to our cable broadband modem. It's great, my sister and I can be online at the same time, so no more fighting over the desktop, and the performance and portability are excellent.

Not saying I don't want it, but I'd prefer just going with the best, cheapest way for now (and I'm not shopping at Office Max anymore; $60 for a Router when Wal-mart has the same one for $50 >_> ).
