Powers of Ten

Postby Nate » Fri Jul 14, 2006 3:03 am

I personally thought this thread was worthy of the General forum, but if not, feel free to move it. ^^

While perusing sites for gaming info, as I tend to do (being on the Gamecast and all), I came across this news article on Kotaku that touts this video as the inspiration for Will Wright's game Spore. Who knows, that's not important.

What it is, is a video called "Powers of Ten." It is an educational film that starts out with a couple on a picnic, and the camera zooms out, increasing the range of vision by 10 times every ten seconds. It starts at 1 meter up, so basically it then increases to 10 meters, 100 meters, etc. It zooms all the way out to 10^24 meters, or 100 million light years. After that, it zooms back in...into the man's hand, all the way down to the subatomic particles of a proton, at 10^-16 meters.

It's pretty intense...gives you an idea of just how enormous and awesome this universe that God has created is. And yes, it will make you feel like an insignificant speck of dust in the entire cosmos. XD;;

How fortunate we are that even if we are "dust specks" in the relative size of the universe, we have a Creator that is even bigger, and loves us more than anything. ^^

EDIT: Oh yeah, it's like, 8 1/2 minutes long. XD;; Maybe some of you will find it boring, but I thought it was cool.

They actually showed that film in my introductory astronomy course I took last semester. I agree that it does a good job of giving you the scope of the universe, especially when the narrator says something to the effect of, "The specks of light moving past you are at this point not stars, but galaxies."

But I must confess that I'm now curious as to how the film relates to Spore. I'm familiar with the title, but not so much that I see an obvious connection.

I saw that at a museum when I was younger, and I agree it is a really cool video. Reminds me of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy quote: "..but to his satisfaction he realized that he had proved conclusively that if life is going to exist in a Universe of this size, then one thing it cannot afford to have is a sense of proportion."

[i]Two vast and trunk-less legs of stone stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, half sunk, a shattered visage lies. Round the decay of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare the lone and level sands stretch far away. On the pedestal these words are inscribed:

“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!â€

Oh, I think I've seen this before...If it's the one I think it is, I saw it at some museum in DC. It was really cool, though! And actually, I've seen another thing that's similar to this, though it only goes out into space. It was done by Louis Giglio, and it's called "Indescribable" (like the song). Anyways, it goes out into space through pictures sent back by the Hubble telescope, and it's really awesome! :D

 Yeah, I remember this film from science class in High School. Definately cool.

This film always amazed me even more of Gods creation.
Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

I saw that, too! I had pretty good seats for that concert when it came to Fort Worth. Didn't the sombrero galaxy just make you laugh? For a former astronaut-want-to-be, it was amazing.

I'd view the video in question, but alas: my computer has no sound.
