Street smarts?

This term is thrown around casually and in jest, but what does it really mean? What are street smarts, and how do they apply to everyday life?

Basically they refer to learning how to survive on the streets of the big city,hence the name Street Smarts.

I think it's a collective term that means the skills / abilities that would allow you to remain safe in metropolitan areas, including but not limited to walking on brightly lit streets at night, avoiding places where there are few people for security reasons, learning how to see trouble coming and avoid it, etc.

As I know it, "street smarts" are the basic skills you need to survive in a big city, particularly a "rougher" area. Such "smarts" may include, but are not limited to the following:

~ Awareness of activity goin on around you
~ Identification of possible/likely threats
~ Working close combat skills, especially those with a defensive focus
~ Possibly possession of a concealed weapon and the ability to draw, fire accurately, and maintain control of the weapon
~ Knowledge of where the safer/more dangerous areas are
