Recommended Shojo Titles

Postby mitsuki lover » Fri Jun 30, 2006 1:46 pm

I already have a similiar thread going at the Abh Nation forum so I decided to start one here as well.
As I am planning of getting into shojo more around August I would like to know what shojo titles people would recommend. :)

Gakuen Alice or Ojamajo Doremi. They're both super-cute type animes, but Ojamajo Doremi is aimed more at younger kids...but I still love it. Gakuen Alice is more serious (but not by much in the beginning) than Ojamajo Doremi and aimed at older kids, but It's still amazing. Unfortunately, Gakuen Alice is only fansubbed up until the 15th episode, the fansubbing group has not dropped it though, they just haven't released anything since february...Ojamajo Doremi has been lisenced by 4kids as Magical Doremi, but the dub actually isn't that terrible.

I've been SO into Fushigi Yuugi lately, BUT there is a few content issues on it...

Thanks for all the ideas so far.
CLAMP would seem to be the first place to look since they have done a lot of series.
Also, yes I have Fushigi Yugi on my list along with Full Metal Panic,Cardcaptor Sakura and St.Tail.
Though I have been wondering if I should get the fansub of CCS or pay the extra bucks to get the regular DVD since Kelly Sheridan is in the CCS dub.

I'd reccomend Pitari Tenshi. It's a really cute show about a boy and his guardian angel. It's a children's show, but it's really good. Nothing really objectionable outside of s cute "demon" girl, I don't think. It's not liscneced, so you'll have to watch the fansubs. I've seen up to episode four, and I think it's 50 episodes total.

(Also, it's what my avatar is from!)

I second CR-chan! Full Moon wo Sagashite all the way!! It's incredible; my favorite anime! :D

Magic Knight Rayearth is also good, along with Haibane Renmei (wonderful, my third favorite). Hope that helps! :D

EDIT: I forgot to mention, Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch! Though it's a little on the cheesy side, it's really cute, clean, and addictive! I love it already, and I'm only 5 episodes in. XD It's unlicensed, but if you're into downloading torrents, it's availiable that way. :)

Fruist Basket and Honey and Clover are, IMHO, two of the best shoujo anime in recent anime history due to the depth of character development. You should give them a try.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I recommend Pretear, Fruits Basket, Fushigi Yuugi, and Kaleido Star.
Pretear, Fruits Basket, and Kaleido Star can probably all be found for fairly reasonable prices. I know there are thinpacks of both Pretear and Kaleido Star, and if I remember correctly I paid about $29 for Pretear and $30-something for Kaleido Star. I'm not really sure of the prices on the Fruits Basket boxset(I bought the individual DVDs a few years back), but there are only 4 volumes, so it probably won't break the bank.
As for Fushigi Yuugi, it's a pretty long series and I have no idea how much the DVDs are selling for, since I bought the series on VHS several years ago when it was first released in the states.

I remember seeing the preview to Pretear on one of my DVDs,I think it was Evangelion or Robotech.Pretty impressed. One good thing about DVDs is the chance to preview other titles before you buy them.

I really don't have anything to add to the list, but I've seen a lot of the series mentioned. Let me know if you want a fellow "old guy" opinion on any of them. I've seen Maison Ikkoku (not really shojo, but close), Kodocha (season 1), Angelic Layer, Magic Knight Rayearth, SuperGals, Fushigi Yugi, Saint Tail, Magic Users Club, Mao-chan, Kare Kano, most of Marmalade Boy, and some of Full Moon. I have Fruits Basket as well, but I haven't watched any, yet, but I will soon.

I imagine it has to do with context. They get to know each other pretty well by the last DVD, so it probably happens when Chiyo-chan is thinking of something really cute Sakaki did. It also is probably to reflect that of all the classmates, Chiyo knows the "real" Sakaki better than anyone. Most just think she's a "cool" gal, but she really would rather be small and cute like Chiyo.

Fushigi Yugi I want to get because of my gal Yui.
Fruits Basket,I don't know about but it seems interesting with everyone turning into animals of the Chinese Zodaic.
Maison Ikkoku is a most because it was created by the great Rumiko Takahashi.
Pretear because as I said I already saw the preview.
Don't know if it's really considered shojo but Sakura Wars because I like the idea of Steam Driven Mechas.
Full Metal Panic and Full Metal Panic Fumouff? because they seem to be something that is on everyone's must see list and stupid AS will probably never air them.
Cardcaptor Sakura(dub)because Kelly Sheridan,Janyse Jaud and a couple other of my favorite VAs are in it.
St.Tail because it sounds like fun.
And there are a few others that I think would be interesting as well.

You know, I've got to second the notion to Boys Over Flowers (Hana Yori Dango). However, like Fushigi Yuugi, there's a LOT of content issues.....beware. Other than that, though, it's highly addicting, and the music is pretty good.

I'm not sure Full Metal Panic counts as shojo. I'm sure I'm no expert in classifying anime, but a show about a guy who pilots a giant fighting robot and has multiple equally interesting, beautiful, and exotic girls falling in love with him sounds pretty shonen to me.

The main character does not have to be a guy for something to be shonen and vice versa.
Full Metal Panic is far from shojo.
