Oo. I have a fair knowledge of mental disorders, having Tourettes (They are mostly seasonal, they go on and off depending the season) and a tiny bit of OCD byself. I can totally understand.

I have also been thinking if I have a bit AS. I just got to know about the syndrome like a few months ago, so I haven't gone through any examination or anything like that. But I'd like to. It would explain many of my problems.

My mum works with like... err... 5 year olds in a "Specials Needs Development and Resource Centre" (what ever that means) but non-the-less I know what your on about and think no different for it.

I supposedly do as well, though I think I only have it very mildly. I used to be very immature and would rant to people about things they didn't care about (i.e. anime), but I've learned to social skills to cope. And it's nothing to be ashamed of! They think people like Einstein, Thomas Jefferson, and Bill Gates might also have it! I also really don't like using the word "normal" to label people. "Normal" is a setting on a hair dryer; in other words, everyone is so different that it's impossible for anyone to be considered normal in my mind. Those are some of my thoughts, I guess.

It is a relevant thing to discuss because two older members who were banned had aspergers... It is a deficiency in social skills... One of the things aspergers does is cause people to misinterpret, such as in one of these members (her gross misinterpretation led to what got her banned) Another thing it does is sorta break your ability to see when what you're saying could be mean (an acquaintance with aspergers went online as my friend because my friend had his MSN on auto-sign, and when my friend's GF tried to talk to him, he said "I decided I hate you, and I never want to see you again" as a joke...)

This is a very good thing to know ahead of time, I guess. As I've only really known 2 people with it, I can't say I've ever seen a case of it that was kept under control, so I don't know how hard or easy it is to control...

I wouldn't call it a disorder, though. It's just the way God makes certain people.

Yeah, I've seen some kids who have it full blown. They have very few social skills, but they're not stupid. Heck, people with Aspergers tend to have normal-above average IQs. They also tend to excel in certain areas (like me with biology and science in general), so they could really do good with their future careers. I myself want to go into herpetology (study of reptiles) or entomology (study of insects), because those are my strengths and I think I'll do well. I have to pass math, though. That's what I'm bad at ^^;

Heh, yes. I know a guy with Aspergers, and he knows random trivia in seemingly every category out there. I actually know a lot of people with disabilities and disorders, and I think it's just one of the things that makes people unique.

Do you refer to Harrasment-kun and his mother? If so that would hardly owe to aspergers and more to being a jerk.

First of all, I have never knowingly banned anyone for having Asperger's syndrome. Secondly, if it's the pair in question I know of the syndrome was Tourettes. And thirdly, obviously this is still a sensitive issue with some people so I ask that you not bring it up and let this thread continue as it was.

Truth be told with the fusion of wackiness and lack of eye contact and visual language on the 'Net, we're pretty much indistinguishable from anybody else in this element.

I didn't say you banned them for having aspergers, I was meaning you banned them for behavior they had due to aspergers. Behavior that was dangerous.

As for those two in question, no, I'm not referring to them... This was before their time (both cases) and it was two separate members who had aspergers... I know it was aspergers because one admitted to it, the other was told to us by a close friend. It was quite a while ago... More than half of current members probably started here AFTER that...

And my acquaintance with aspergers... He's not really an anime fan, so he wouldn't be coming here...

Funny that this thread should come up...

I recently had a conversation with one of my freinds about this. He claims that he "collects" people with A.S.. (His way of saying that all of his freinds have AS to some extent) Apparently, he finds it easier to socialize with people who have at least a mild case of it. Before this, I had never heard of this disorder, and quickly learned that I have alot of the symptoms of it. If I do have it, it is extremely mild.

It's really nothing that needs to be "cured". Honestly, if it ever was, it would be a loss to society.

Don't worry about it, man. There are other people here with AS. In fact, one of them is a friend of mine IRL. This is one of those things that has a SERIOUSLY wide bredth of severity. Many people with Aspergers can figure out what to do in a given social context by processing their way through it (that's a question of training and practice). It's a matter of being aware of your surroundings, which is arguably the harder piece for many.

My nephew has asperger's and he's such a sweet kid! He does say some of the darndest things sometimes though. It's kinda funny, cause sometimes you just don't know what he'll say next -- not sure if this is due to asperger's or his personality (not that we make fun of him or anything, it's just very amusing ^^). That's cool that you let everyone know, I think, because it shows concern for others.

I have AS also. Basically, I have had to learn the social skills I possess like someone would learn to play the piano --so I still make misstrokes at times --it has lead to some very awkward social things --but most of my friends are understanding and just laugh...

Anyway, the main reason I am posting on this older thread is to offer some more resources about AS.
One book that I found helpful was "Freaks, Geeks, and Asperger Syndrome" by Luke Jackson. Luke is a 13 yr old kid in Britain (or was at the time the book was written) and he offers a lot of good insights into life with AS.
Another is "Surviving in College with Asperger Syndrome"

It's true that most people can have certain tendencies, but that doesn't mean everyone has AS. Most adults, for example, will almost never get diagnosed with it. It's nothing more than high-functioning autism, so it's still seen as mainly a childhood thing.

Often times though, some people simply don't meet the DSM-IV criteria.

Since it is a childhood thing, seems kinda silly to call it a disorder or anything. (I think that's already been said here though.)
