Pens and mechanical pencils, probably the only things still made in Japan anymore

Postby Somebody'sPet » Sat Jul 08, 2006 9:11 pm

You know, with alot of companies these days out-sourcing their factories and manufacturing to places like China, Taiwan, and Malaysia. Its nice to find a product of some kind that still carries the label "Made in Japan". Now don't get me wrong, stuff made in China, Taiwan and Malaysia these days has gotten extreme good in quality, but I just feel its nice to sometimes find things that still carry the label that says it was made in the land of the rising sun. So far, most electronics these days are going to say Made in China, Taiwan, or Malaysia. However, I have found at least two things that are still made in Japan, and that is pens and mechanical pencils. Brands such as Pentel, Pilot, and Uniball still carry the made in japan label. Whats even harder to find is stuff made in Germany and Korea. My dad did give me a german made rotring pen and a korean made MonAmi mechanical pencil, along with something like 50 pentel mechanical pencils(all made in japan and they all work excellent). If you're wondering why he gave me all that stuff, he just simply didn't want them anymore.

Yeah, I have noticed the same thing. Taiwan and China just are cheaper than they used to be, and have okay quality for electronics.

On another note, doesn't this belong in General, perhaps?

I think liquid paper stick-pen-things are still made in Japan. I still have one from 1995, and it still works! :)

All my pens are made in America. Because they're space pens. So I can write underwater or at -50 Celsius or in zero gravity.

Though I don't know why I'd be writing in any of those places, but hey, it's good to know if it happens, I'm prepared. :D

I buy BIC pens 'cuz they're cheap. You can get like 10 of 'em for a buck. They're apparently made in France, too. And I've never had a BIC pen mess up on me, except when it's out of ink...but then, how many pens work well when they have no ink? :P

My car is made in Japan, and that's the most expensive thing I own by a lot.

It should also be noted that while a lot of electronics are sourced to china/taiwan for production, in many cases the original design is done in Japan. That's changing too though.

There are still plenty of things made in Japan. While its true that there is little space for large factories, Japan still cranks out some serious exports the least of which may be pens and pencils.

Their major areas of production and exportation are Transport equipment, Motor vehicles, Semiconductors, Electrical machinery and Chemicals.
Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

Oh, I'm so sorry. I completely forgot that I was still in the General Entertainment section when I typed it up. I don't know why the heck I did that.

:bang:

I agree that there are still things that are made over there, but it seems like these days that its becoming less and less. Just like you said, Industrial grade electronics and machinery(thats the term for what you said when you were talking about stuff like Tansport equipment, Motor vehicles, Semiconductors, Electrical machinery and chemicals). Now, in terms of semiconductors, South Korea is really good at making them(ever heard of Samsung Semiconductors?). The reason I said pens and mechanical pencils is because they're the products that are made in Japan that are both easy to find and cheap.

I'm thankful my dad was in the electronics repair business for so long. He has got all kinds of stuff that is made in Japan that you can't even get anymore.

The good thing about buying cars from Japan is, most of them are put together here in US and that means, US workers.
