Macross chronology and proper order

Postby eva-boy7985 » Fri Jul 07, 2006 1:08 pm

My best friend just bought me the Macross Plus OVA boxset for my birthday. Thus far, I've enjoyed it quite a bit, but I am also aware that Macross is something that is rather extensive, detail-oriented, and indeed has some history behind it, much like Mobile Suit Gundam. Here is a link to the search I did on Rightstuf for Macross DVDs. I was just wondering if someone could maybe list everything Macross in the proper order for me in terms of release and/or story chronology, if there is in fact any. I am also aware that Robotech is sometimes synonymous with Macross, but there are also Robotech shows that essentially are self-contained or separate from the Macross universe. Could someone also differentiate these titles for me, as I am more interested in things truly Macross versus the Robotech (perhaps worse?) spin-offs. Anyways, I know this may seem like something of a convoluted and daunting request, but it'd be much appreciated if someone could enlighten me :-) Thanks!

Macross in Chronological order:

Macross Zero (OVA prequal series)
Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (Original TV series)
Macross: Do You Remember Love? (AU movie)
Macross II (AU Movie...I think)
Macross Plus
Macross 7 (TV series and movie)
Macross Dynamite 7 (OVA)

Robotech was a conglomeration of 3 seperate anime series from japan, Macross, Genesis Climber Mospeada, and Super Dimensional Calvary Southern Cross. The only original Robotech animation is the new Robotech Shadow Chronicles movie, which is being made by America, I believe.

The first season of Robotech is subtitled The Macross Saga and is the one that directly links to Macross.
FYI:Macross,at least in Robotech,is the name of the city and island.

BTW, to my knowledge, Do You Remember Love is not available in the US. At least not yet.

I see I see......but then what is Macross: Super Dimension Fortress? Is it something different from Macross: Super Dimensional Fortress (note the "al" at the end of Dimension). I'm just basing this off of what I saw for sale at Rightstuf's website. They looked like two different shows based on the boxart Rightstuf showed, and I've seen Super Dimension Fortress at Best BUy new with the first DVD and artbox, and they aren't usually known for carrying uber old stuff.........

As far as the new DVD/artbox goes, this year ADV did an accurate re-dub of Macross with (mostly) all new voice actors.

Macross Zero OVA. Date 2002 to 2004 (Five eps) (prequel to Super Dimensional Fortress Macross)

Macross II OVA Date 1992 six eps (sequel to Super Dimensional Fortress Macross) But alot of Macross fan think of this as parallel universe story.)

Macross Plus OVA Date 1994 five eps (sequel to Super Dimensional Fortress Macross)

Macross Plus Movie Edition Date 1995 (A remake of the 4-part Macross Plus OAV series)

Macross 7 Date 1994 to 1995 49 eps (sequel of Macross Plus)

Macross 7 the Movie: The Galaxy's Calling Me! Date 1995 (sequel of Macross 7)

Macross Dynamite 7 OVA Date 1997 four eps (sequel of Macross 7)

Close, but not right either. Corrected below:

Macross Zero OVA. Date 2002 to 2004 (Five eps) (prequel to Super Dimensional Fortress Macross)

Super Dimensional Fortress Macross. Date 1982 to 1983 (36 eps)

Macross: Do You Remember Love? movie Date 1984 (retelling story of Super Dimensional Fortress Macross)

Macross Flash Back 2012 OVA Date 1987 one ep (sequel to Super Dimensional Fortress Macross)

Macross Plus OVA Date 1994 five eps (sequel to Super Dimensional Fortress Macross)

Macross Plus Movie Edition Date 1995 (A remake of the 4-part Macross Plus OAV series)

Macross 7 Date 1994 to 1995 49 eps (sequel of Macross Plus)

Macross 7 the Movie: The Galaxy's Calling Me! Date 1995 (sequel of Macross 7)

Macross Dynamite 7 OVA Date 1997 four eps (sequel of Macross 7)

Macross II OVA Date 1992 six eps (sequel to Super Dimensional Fortress Macross) But alot of Macross fan think of this as parallel universe story.)

Macross II definitely takes place after all of them; around 2085 I believe. It should be noted that Macross II, like Macross +, was released both as a ova series and as a unified movie with cut some footage (but unlike Macross+, did not add any to the movie version).

Macross (the original series) is available, but I think it's rare, much like the uncut sailormoon seasons 1 and 2.

Macross II is available on Tape, but I'm not sure about DVD...

Macross Plus is available in both OVA form (more complete) and Movie form (more emotional and exciting, IMNSHO)

I'd suggest watching the movie version of Macross Plus... The revision to the sharon apple awakening scene is worth the price of the movie alone... In includes a new Sharon Apple song, Wanna Be an Angel (which is what makes that scene so different) Also, the ending is a bit different in the movie... I just like the movie better all around, though the OVA is technically more complete... Now, in addition to the scene I mentioned, there is also a brief sexual aftermath and a bit more violent conclusion to one of the scenes... The former was pointless, but short, and the latter is maybe a bit over the top, but now the OVA seems incomplete without that (as well as the "Wanna be an angel" scene)

I don't know if the rest of the macross series is here or not...

It's not rare to find the original Macross series anymore.

AnimEigo discontinue selling Macross in December 31st, of 2004.

In July of 2005, ADV Films News got the license to release the original Macross TV series in North America with an English dub and redone the sound for it too.

Right now, they are up to vol four on the dvd's.

Wait... So... the original Macross, with a new dub (not the robotech dub) and subtitles? If only Sailormoon fans could get so lucky...

Ok... ADV did that for Macross... Now, hopefully Naoko lets Sailormoon be sold again, and ADV gets the rights... I want to see a new dub of Sailormoon that uses the right names, music, and plot... Completely uncut and not having Luna sound like Angela Langsbury... Or, just re-release the subtitled set with better sound... I'm getting Macross on Netflix...
