Perhaps because the subject of the poll is fantasy, not science-fiction.

hmm...assuming that you're including sci-fi(are you?), then CS Lewis' space trilogy & Dune. neither of which made the list o.o

Harry Potter is prolly #1 but hey..everyone is going to vote that :P

I would have to say Earthsea and the Wheel of Time are the best, for fantasy.
The Xanth series is fun to read, but I really wouldn't call them great books. It's interesting watching the writing style change though, from book 1 to 28 or whatever its on now.

Puritan wrote:At least Jordan is finally ENDING the Wheel of Time. For a while I thought he would die before it was done. New characters every book, no conclusion of the storyline....at least it looks like it will be done at book 13.

Wait, wasn't it ending with book 12? (Although, I can't see how he could possibly tie everything up with only one more book.)

Lord of the Rings, Narnia, and The Chronicles of Prydain.

I'm really glad you included the Chronicles of Prydain in the list (it's the series that has the Black Cauldron in it). I highly recommend you read it if you haven't already. It's kind of a kids series, but that makes it a fast read. ;)

I believe that is what they are officially saying, but I also find it hard to imagine tying up all of the plotlines in one more book. In other news, it turns out Robert Jordan has some sort of illness. I haven't read the entire article, but he made an announcement about it on Tor's website. http://www.tor.com/jordan/

Lord of the Rings. However, I largely prefer The Silmarillion and Book of Lost Tales then to Lord of the Rings. I am a huge Tolkien nut. I also enjoyed Narnia.

My fav fantasy series are: LOTR, Inheritance Trilogy, Earthsea, Inkspell, and Chronicles of Narnia. Inheritance should have been a choice, it's excellent.

What is interesting about the Piers Anthony novels is that he always includes an end note at the back where he talks about where he got the inspiration for the book and what was happening in his life and in his family, etc.when he was writing it.

WIELDING A Red Sword
BEING A Green Mother
IN LOVE With Evil
etc.

Yes, Drizzt is the man...err elf! ^^ Salvatore does do awesome fight scenes. I liked the Hunter's Blades trilogy. I like the trilogy he's currently working on as well, the one with Jarlaxle and Artemis Entreri(The Sellswords, I think). It's odd to start a new trilogy from a book that previously belonged to another set though. Oh well.

My favorite fantasy series is Terry Brooks' Heritage of Shannara series though.

My fantasy series in order of like:
Heritage of Shannara
Harry Potter
Anything with Drizzt
random series that Mercedes Lackey is involved in authoring or co-authoring
and then other random stuff that I think looks/sounds interesting at the moment

1 Any thing by Tolkien (even the essays)
2 Malazan book of the Fallen (almost nobody has heard of this one, but deffinatly worth the read)
3 Wheel of Time, I really hope Jordan doesn’t die before the last one is written. Been reading that series for over a decade.
I would not mind you in my head, if you were not so clearly mad.
-Lews Therin Telamon(Wheel of time)

Every worthwhile plan is diabolical.
-Tehol (Midnight Tides)

-Grand Admiral Thrawn(Last Command)

brother: No I’m not, I just happen to like Star Wars.
Me: Alright, how many squadrons of fighters does a Star Destroyer carry?
brother: Is it a Victory, or a Imperial Class destroyer?
*long pause*
brother: I think I just proved your point.

Alright, I know you guys will scorn me for this. I scorn myself.
But I am in love with George R.R. Martin's A song of Ice and Fire. It's incredibly vulgar with MANY inappropriate scenes, but once you get past that, it is one of the best fantasy series out there. Martin keeps it very real and doesn't let everyone survive and make victory seem inevitable. A very admirable approach, since from book 1 I really wanted to quit the series after I saw what happened to one of the main characters. Anyway, Remember everyone: This is an EXTREMELY explicit read. I'm not recommending it to any and everyone.

DISCWORLD!!!!! As mentioned before, the abscence of it is a mockery to all that is Pratchett. :P

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Oh, Wait. It's not Fantasy. *guffaw*

The Wheel of Time has entranced me.

Lastly, T.H. White's the Once and Future King and the subsequent novels. The Book of Merlyn was wonderful.

After hearing so much about Earthsea (and the recent news that Miyazaki is making a movie on it), I'll have to check Le Guin's series out. domo.
God creates out of nothing. Wonderful, you say. Yes, to be sure, but he does what is still more wonderful: he makes saints out of sinners.

Oh yeah...

I read the first book in the series when I was... fifteen? I liked the first lesson in swordplay, and the fact that he isn't afraid to kill of his characters. Blast, now I want to read more of the series.

But let me repeat what he said:

DO NOT READ THIS BOOK if you are easily disturbed.
