I ended up with some crappy bootleg or Hong Kong release of LE on eBay last year. Thought I had gotten a deal.

Always buy from a reputable retailer. Amazon and ebay trade primarily in bootlegs most of the time. Online stores are much more reliable than sites that allow others to sell their own merchandise.

It's not all bootlegs on eBay. I've gotten some legitimate releases there. I've gotten a lot better at identifying the bootlegs since then.

The general rule is that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. An official release of a 26 episode series for under $30 just doesn't happen.

Generally if it is sold in the U.S. or Canada it should have a Region 1 on it.

Most online Anime stores will give you the original price along with what they're selling it for.

I just finished watching the series again, but I'm still not quite clear on [SPOILER]why the Silvana had to open fire on the Urbanus toward the end[/SPOILER]

[spoiler]If I remember correctly, the Urbanus was acting as a shield for the Silvana. When it got hit the Silvana had to blast its way through to continue towards Queen Delphine without slowing.[/spoiler]

Just finished watching it for the third time. I love this series! The designs, the world and characters are so tangible and loveable or hateable. I don't feel this strongly about most series (except maybe 24).
Watching the last episode I found that when the old Guild member lifted into the sky he gave the command to ascend and then you clearly hear Dio's voice call out "Ascending!" He is possibly alive! But if he is, would he be insane or cured of his brainwashing? Any thoughts?

I think he's alive too...

However, did you know that 'Dio' means 'God' in italian? And 'Lucciola' means 'firefly' ^^

That picture wasn't drawn be Range Murata who's illustrations were inspiration for the show...But it's a good picture anyway.

As far as Dio being alive...I just don't know......

I really liked Last Exile as well. I thought it could have been a lot more, though. Lots of potential. I also like Steampunk, so this was a very easy anime to like.

Point of interest: Cicada (Lucciola's brother) is the name of a variety of large winged insects.

Quick qeustions for US fans of Last Exile. I see that there are two Last Exile box-sets at Amazon.com. One is called Last Exile - The Murata Range Complete Set Edition and the other is Last Exile - The Complete Series Boxed Set.

My questions: are both box-sets the exact same series, just different editions with the same number of episodes?
