My Opinion of the Inuyasha Sub

Postby mitsuki lover » Mon Jun 05, 2006 12:58 pm

A couple caveats before I begin:
*I am not in any way anti-sub,in fact I have rather enjoyed the subs of other series such as Excel Saga,Neon Genesis Evngelion and the Tenchi movie Tenchi Forever.
*Undoubtedly my opinion is biased on the fact that I came to the sub after so much time watching the dub.
*This is not any way construed to be official,just my opinion so you can agree or disagree.
So here goes.

On the whole I was looking forward to watching the sub version of Inuyasha after reading how much enthuasitic reviews subfans gave it.After the first
several minutes I was tempted to turn it off and go back to watching the dub.Having root canal during a thunder storm would have been more pleasant.
Then again I have to admit the ep.I watched was from the first season and actors are still trying to find their characters.Though I have to say by this
time they should have looked in the Lost And Found,especially for Kagome and Inuyasha.They were the two worst among the Japanese cast.
My opinion of the cast:

*Kagome=She came across as sounding way too youngish at the beginning but showed a bit of improvement toward the end.The only other problem was when her seiyuu was doing the Next Ep. Preview.She sounded like she had too much sugar or was over caffienated when reading the preview.I mean it came across like she was auditioning for the role of Excel in Excel Saga.

*Inuyasha=The guy needs to take remdial acting lessons.His entire idea of making Inuyasha sound tough was to speak very loud and very fast.The word FLAT comes to mind as in he could have gotten kicked out of the army for having a flat voice.

*Miroku=The second best of the entire lot.

*Shippo=Well Shippo is Shippo so it would be amazing if the seiyuu playing him could have missed.Shippo in short is such a gimme that you would have to be really bad to not do him well.

*Kikyo=The best and only reason,IMO,to watch the sub version.The seiyuu who did Kikyo really captured her essence well.It was different from Willow
Johnson's portrayal but still you could sense the contradictions in her character.It's too bad that the Japanese version had to center around Inuyasha and Kagome as a Kikyo and Miroku series would have been hundred times better.

Note:I haven't seen any eps with Sango,Kagura or Naraku or Kagome's friends and family in them yet so can't say wheter or not my opinion of them would be any different.

Recommedation=If you must watch Inuyasha subbed make it one that is heavily Miroku or Kikyo.In general if you plan to watch any anime subbed
make it something like Neon Genesis Evangelion or Original Dirty Pair.
IMO the only way to watch Inuyasha is dubbed.

Hehh...I doubt this thread will be open long. At any rate...

I watched an episode of InuYasha subbed a long time ago, and I didn't think it was bad at all, really. Granted, I don't think the dub is too bad either, but from what I heard of the subs, I wouldn't agree with the descriptions you gave. Then again, that is just my opinion, after all.

I have to agree with you, Rad, I am not a big fan of Inuyasha. I have nothing against Rumiko Takehashi, my favorite manga series- Maison Ikkoku- was done by her. However, the series itself I find...err...oppsing to my religious beliefs. I mean, shouls we as Christians be in support of a show that gives demons kind qualities, as Sesshomaru helping out a young child, having girls swoon over these fictional demons, or believe that demons and humans should cooperate together....I don't think so anyway. PM if you wish to further discuss this topic.

Oh, oooh, no, I didn't mean it that way...I do enjoy InuYasha from time to time, and infact, the characters known as "demons" are actually not demons at all...They are a mythical creature from Japanese mythology known as "youkai," and they could be either good or evil. In the dub, the word demon is basically a mistranslation of the word youkai, so the characters aren't really demons as we know them. But since arguments over dubs and subs are usually looked down upon, I figured this thread wouldn't be left open too long...I could be wrong, though. :thumb:

Anyways, back to the topic...:sweat:

I know...but whenever I see anything AGAINST Inuyasha...I like to put in my opinion...that is why I have people out to get me....seriously. But I understand what you mean Corrie, and I do agree with the points you make, don't get me wrong....I merely see more things about the series I disagree with than you do. ^^;

I think once you've gotten used to a certain version its hard to switch over. Personally I think that Kappei is an amazing actor and blows away Inuyasha's dub actor by miles (gosh, when he screams KAZE NO KIZU! and KONGOSOUHAAA! its great). Naraku is also played by my all-time favorite bad guy voice actor Tomoyuki Morikawa and I loved Kagome's voice compared to her sub.

It seems we'll never agree huh? XD;;

That's true which is why I put the caveats first.Also note that I didn't say it was all bad the actors who played Kikyo and Miroku I liked very much.And why would it be locked?I am simply sharing my own opinion and stated it upfront that it is my own opinion.

I do think I like the dub better

Well, it all depends on your personal preference. I like the sub better because I think the voices are better, there are fewer curse words, the original names of things such as attacks, and, good golly, the lack of cheesy lines. As for the sub... I won't get into that for fear of being banned. ;)

As long as no-one says anything that would be seen as flaming,I don't think there would be much of a problem.

You know what's funny? The Japanese Inuyasha VA is the same guy that did Usopp in the Japanese One Piece (though he sounds good in OP). :p

Well I have only seen a few eps of IY and those dubbed, so I can't say too much on that, but in general I think that when you get the idea of something as "normal," other versions tend to be judged based on that.

I know when I am used to subs and then hear the dub voice I tend to think "man that sounds so bad" and it probably operates on the same principle. The original way you heard it is usually preferred except in extreme cases
