Germany 2006!

Postby Galant » Sat May 27, 2006 1:54 pm

This might be a shot in the dark but are there any football fans out there...er... I mean soccer..? :)

The World Cup is kicking off June 9th and I was wondering if there were any here who will be keeping track?

I've opened up a bit of a mini league for game/score predictions if anyone would care to join. Otherwise, who else is looking forward to the tournament and who are you rooting for?

Come on England! :)

I tend to stick with internationals, haven't followed club in a long while. When I was ickle I used to be a Man utd fan coming from Pendle, in Lancashire, not far from Manchester, but I think I'd have to have a look around if I got into it again and see who I liked.

From what I can tell not much is expected from the team, but then they have the home field and it's amazing what that can do, so I think they'll do well in the groups but get taken out in the quarters, maybe, just maybe they'll make the semi's, but no further.

I think that if they meet either Spain, England or France in the semis they can progress further, but if they meet Brasil, Italy or Denmark they will get crushed.

Spain, France or England? I think they'd have a hard time with any of those - especially England ;) -Who, by the way, are going to go on to win it - I mean how can they not - it's exactly 40 years since the won it last in 66, that was against Germany, this in in Germany. They may as well write England's name on the cup already. :) ....Ahem.

As for South Korea, I reckon they'll have a chance into the quarters. I'd love to see them go further though. Even the finals, I'd love to see that, but then they'd have to lose to England of course. :)

Germany tend to beat England. They have a history in that area. I would feel sorry for England if it would come out to a penalty shoot out beetwen the parts. How many times have England lost to Germany in a penalty shoot out?

England tend to lose to Germany except for when they win world cups against them, beat them 5-1 at home :)

But the records show that in ALL games played (12) they've won 5 and England have won 4. In World Cup games we're tied, with 1-1, having drawn 2 also.

I really like soccer, but I don't usually watch the sport on TV that much. It should be really called "football" and not soccer... because Football should really be called "handball" not football because it is hardly kicked in the sport we americans call "football." Again, America messes things up,

I think I might watch it this time around... maybe. We'll see what happens.

Well, my guess would be yes cause when some german pastors came to stay at our house they were talking all about it. One guy even got us wine with soccer themed stuff all over it. I cant properly discribe it.

England should make use of this great striker.

He is on his way to everton as well.

I think he is much better than Peter Crouch anyway.

YEAH! Soccer fans!

I root for the US, of course, but I'm realistic - I doubt the US will get out of the first round. That's partially thanks to a crappy draw, but they haven't been performing well recently. (Lost 1-0 against the minnow that is Morocco? Bleh.)

The US may do better than expected, I'm curious as to how they will fair. As for the tournament it starts June 9th and last exactly one month - the final is on July 9th.

US coverage is via ESPN who are airing all the games live. I believe the spanish version can be picked up on Telefutura and Univision. For those whithout access to those channels, I hear that games can be found online through various providers. Those in the UK can get the BBC's online coverage, those who aren't should just google for online world cup coverage, or something like that. There seem to be a few places offering such a service, but I can't speak for them since I've never used them.

Japan are in the tournament too so I'll be looking to see how far they can progress.

Who remembers the maddening Korea chant? You know, the one that all nine billion fans sung in each game for all 90 minutes?

If I am not particularly interested in the Cópa Mundial, it is not because of my Americanism but because sports in general do not interest me.
