Dentists! Yay!

Postby TriezGamer » Tue May 30, 2006 11:48 am

Just got back from the dentist's office. Had a molar extracted.

And the dentist started working before the anaesthetic had fully kicked in. It hurt, but he was smart enough to notice that I was definately feeling it. Since he had already made some progress, the dose of anaesthetic he gave me in response took hold practically immediately, and I didn't feel anything else the rest of the time.

It's sore now, but it's better than the toothache I've been having, and at least the sore-ness will go away over time.

13 teeth remaining. (I have an upper denture already...)
Embraced by a gentle breeze, my heart breaks as I think of you.
All alone at the top of the hill, I watch as the seasons go by.

Wishing for courage softly, I pray.
There's no going back now, to those tender days when you held me in your arms.

Well at least I hope everything went well, it sounds like it did!

I had to have two of my bottom molars out a while back because their were no second teeth under them. When I had them removed, what really annoyed me about the dentist was the calm way in which he said "just a little pressure. Just a little pressure," and as he was saying that he was pushing with all his might to try and get my tooth out,

The pain is not fun, but I guess we all need dentists to save the day sometime. :thumb:

The pain I'm feeling now is nothing compared to the pain of the toothache. This pain is a lot more temporary, too. =p

I once had to have 4 teeth taken out for my braces. They took them out ALL. AT. ONCE. It took 8 shots in my mouth, and I felt all of them. Hurt like heck. But my teeth are much better now, so I'm not complaining.

Ehh, I had 18 pulled at once, but they knocked me out for that one. I felt it for a good 2 weeks though...

Because *I* am an idiot. Although I'm getting better about it, for most of the last 10 years, hygiene has been a very low priority for me -- and dental health was lowest on the list.

Combine that with a sweet tooth so big it would put Alaska to shame, and an addiction to Mountain Dew running in the realm of 7 to 9 cans a day, multiply by 10 years ...

Yeah, my teeth were not in good shape. On the plus side, my upper denture gives me the best smile I've ever remembered having.

:wow!: *terrified* I completely recommend kicking the Mtn Dew habit. That does crazy things to a person's health. =/

anyways, glad things turned out ok.

WOW! Well, my brother is the same way, and he got many cavities (SP). They didn't have to pull out his teeth, though. He got a few fillings. It's weird, because, although I don't always brush my teeth as much as I should ( ) I have never gotten any Cavities (SP) and our dentist always commends me on having the best teeth out of the family... Maybe I just have good teeth?

Well, I hope you do better with those dentures... can dentures get Cavities, by the way?

Not cavities, really, but they can eventually wear down -- even if they did get cavities, you can just buy new ones. That's not an option with REAL teeth.

Well, I've had em for almost 5 months now. They still feel weird at times, but for the most part I'm used to em.

A couple times, I've taken them out and walked around the school campus smiling at people. Kinda re-defines 'toothless grin'. And no, I don't have any luck with the women. :P

They do a lot. I'm still trying to get heavily involved, but what they do (student run-clinics to name BUT A FEW activities) is impressive enough to gain the praise of such people like Harvard's Dean of the school of Dental Medicine. Everyweek we get some very high-up people in the dental world to talk about... stuff.

I am fighting a war against receeding gum lines at the moment.I have to be sure to brush my gums as well as my teeth so that they don't recede too fast.If I don't it will end being costly. So far I've been able to keep them from getting too far away.

Well at least you are used to them, hehe. So was it really that bad that you couldn't have gotten just fillings. Did they really have to take out the entire tooth each time?

Well, I had all of my upper teeth and my lower wisdom teeth extracted in a single surgery. I was knocked out for it, so I really dunno how it went, except that it lasted about an hour, and I had heavy bleeding for almost 6 hours afterward. Still had light bleeding for a couple of days, too.

As far as the decision to get them all pulled and have a denture, it was mostly a cost issue. To get the teeth 'fixed' would have cost nearly $15000, whereas getting them all extracted and getting a denture only cost about $9000. On top of that, getting the teeth fixed isn't really helpful, since my bad dental hygiene would likely have cost me even more in the long run.

Quite frankly, I was mentally prepared to have a denture for quite a while, recognizing my own laziness with brushing, so it never bothered me from the start. Almost everyone in my family over the age of 65 has a denture of some kind anyway, I just figure I'll have an extra 40 years to get used to em.
