There are a number of underlining themes of course. Including transcendence of man's existence and stuff like that.

Like how people still look for allegory in The Lord of the Rings when Tolkien said it himself that the story wasn't allegorical and that he hated allegory in all of its forms. Or how you can often tell the religion or thought pattern of an author by the random things they write.
