Homeschoolers

Talk about anything in here.

It's not really that surprising when you think about it. As I understand it, there aren't the same mechanisms for evaluating these home or charter schools as there are for other institutions. Based on that, the recruiters may have felt they were dealing with an unknown quantity wrt Bob's academics, and so would have been understandably leery. It may be possible to write a battery of exams to get his high school equivalency though. Even then, some form of higher education (either inside or outside the armed services) would be needed for some positions.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

That's true of many homeschools, but in my case (since I was actually enrolled in a school that created the curriculum for me), every year I had to take a standardized CAT test, and I was graded on it, so I did actually have a legit summary of progress. I don't know how many schools do this though.

Yeah, but at least you have a record of your status...*shakes head* I always hated that test.

yeah, thats true but i really dont like records, cause thier seen as perminate, and if i was terible at math one year that lives with you for life, the only way to bring your grade up is to take extra classes , and if you have too many hours on your record they start chargeing you more for tuition,. :stressed: the viscous cycle

so let it be writen so let it be done.

Wow, there ARE a lot of homeschoolers here! And I'm one of them. So since it seems to be the trend, here's my life story:

I started out homeschooling, with a 2 month exception during Kindergarten where, to make a long story short, my school supplies were left in the moving van :thumb: So anyway, I kept on homeschooling through fifth grade, and that summer we moved from Alabama allll the way up to Nebraska! When we moved, I was in a state of utter depression for at least a week, and continued to feel pretty much sad all the time for the next 6 months because, in all that time, I only made ONE friend! So then, mom&dad decided I could try this thing called "Montessori", which took place at the public school, but had much more focus on the idea of "community", "group work", and going at one's own pace. Well, I met lots of new people on my first day, and it didn't take long to figure out that my social life was improving A LOT. So then, I went on with Montessori through the end of 7th grade, at which point Mom felt that God was calling her to homeschool us (me and my 2 siblings) again. She spent most of the summer convincing me that we should homeschool, and promising that we would get lots of activities to do with homeschoolers and all these other great things. Which, as far as I was concerned a few months later, was all a bunch of lies. I've been pretty depressed up until recently at the lack of friends I'm faced with now that I'm back in homeschooling; mom decided that most of the aforementioned activities cost $$$, so we can do them all like she thought, and when I did try chorus, I hated it like liver&spinach! And if some of you adult members LIKE liver and spinach, that's just fine because the reason I hated chorus was because I was the only guy there who didn't have to shave!

So anyhow, we have kinda become part of a group of homeschoolers who meet once a month or so, and maybe my life'll feel less lonely if I can get a relationship going with some of them. But I think the main reason I don't feel as depressed right now is the same reason you stop being depressed after a loved one dies -- life goes on, so you just have to live with it and see where it takes ya.

WOW, that was a long post! My fingers are getting that uncomfortable tingle they get when I type too much!

Oh, and also, there was a time when I was upset at the school because of the cussing and stuff. I couldn't beleive my ears when someone called me the f-word in the hallway because I got in his way accidentally! I'm afraid I must admit I got more into the habit of saying phrases like "sucks" even though my mom doesn't like them, and maybe it was a good thing she pulled me out before I got into ACTUAL swear words, I dunno. I still feel like the social life made up for it, though

It doesn't. But hey, homeschoolers need to eat too - even spinach.

[size=84][color=seagreen]YOU SEE

You see into the deepest part of me ---

beyond the fog I hide behind.

You cast your light upon the shadows

that stretch like cobwebs in my mind.

You ease the pain when I am hurting,

and morbid visions from my past

pierce into the realm of Reason

as though I danced on blades of glass.

You grant me strength when I have fallen

and, once again, I've lost my way.

You take my hand in Yours and lead me

into the promise of a brand new day.

You bring order to all my chaos,

yet set my well-laid plans awry.

You place me on a firm foundation ---

then give me wings so I can fly.

You sand away my roughened edges

and polish all the dullest parts

until I stand before Your presence...

a newly-sculpted work of art.

You see into the heart within me,

right through my motives and selfish will.

And yet, in spite of all You see

You say You love me even still.

I am homeschooled via a pc and internet. I work the pc grades most things except essays/reports etc. which a teacher at her home/my church grades. I like it cause I can work when I want how I want and well it just is great I can focus and do more research be more productive and stuff more flexible.
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

I'm homeschooled, too, and I have been all my life. Where I live, they have different programs for homeschooled kids like band and drama and then extracurricular classes like Speech and Chemistry and stuff. I'm in drama this year, but I'm also taking classes at a community college and stuff. It's been fun.

My mother has been teaching her children at home (except for last year) since '87, possibly '86. In that time, 3* have graduated, one has transferred to public school, and the youngest are in seventh and fifth grades.

I, personally, enjoyed it. First there is all the time that was freed. Instead of being in transit to and from school, and scrambling down corridors in between periods, we went to the kitchen, got out our crates and started working. The time saved, at least in my case went into reading. Sometimes the text books (you mean to tell me you didn't read ahead in your English text? For shame!), usually books from the library.

Next was the late start time. Generally,we got up at 8 in the morning.

And probably the best of all is the self pacing. You need a year and a half to do Algebra II? You got it.

*my brother and I took the GED to avoid the hassle of compiling a transcript.

Aww man!! I have to make a big big big decision now... do I want to be homeschooled or not for highschool! Registration is very soon so I'll need to figure out whether I'm going at all AND what classes I'll be taking if the answer is yes.

I feel like I'm really missing out on something being homeschooled, but on the other hand I wonder if going to highschool will reallly be the right choice. I hear that some of the things that people talk about there I really shouldn't be getting into. But then maybe that's just a few crazies that my mom likes to talk about :P My best friend who has been homeschooled all his life is going to the highschool next year, and he says that if he really doesn't like it he can always go back to being homeschooled after the first semester.

I've been looking over some of the classes, like the computer science classes and some of the math, and I'm not sure how well their stuff is going to mesh with what I've already learned. For example, if what if I start adv. algebra and find out that I need a LOT more review on the easy stuff from algebra 1? Like I said the programming courses look really confusing from the short descriptions of them I could find. I almost feel like I would need to take a test to see what I know and where I need to start!

Ugh I am so stressed out!

I'd personally pick high school, I think you'd miss out on some important life stuffs.
Maybe our mistakes are what make our fate. Without them, what would shape our lives? Perhaps if we never veered off course, we wouldn't fall in love, or have babies, or be who we are. After all, seasons change. So do cities. People come into your life and people go. But it's comforting to know the ones you love are always in your heart. And if you're very lucky, a plane ride away.

Ditto. I'd recommend going to high school. You'll also likely have a wider range of opportunities to further your education at the high school. More facilities for one (art and tech classes for a start), not to mention teachers who likely have a stronger grasp of the subject, adding both breadth and depth.

Yes, but you tend to become more self-reliant without somebody telling you what to do. Also, there's no telling what kind of people you'll be around and if you choose to do some kind of debate club, it's easier to find a policy club.

<More facilities for one (art and tech classes for a start),>

That's not entirely true; homeschoolers do get together for art, band, choir, et cetera. Not as much as public schooles, but the classes are there. Not many techy classes, but most homeschoolers I know teach themselves.

Wow - where did this thread come from?? For some reason, I feel the need to throw my two cents in here.

First of all, I was homeschooled my entire life until college, and I didn't feel like I got slighted in any way by not going to public school. Yeah, I did have to teach myself a lot in high school, but at the same time, the argument that the teachers are less compotent is null from my experience. In my homeschool group we had tutors that we would pay to come and teach classes to us that our parents didn't really know. They were always christians, and were vastly intelligent. I took Algebra and Pre-Cal with my homeschool group from a brilliant man who taught at a college in our city. I took Physics and Microbiology from another man who worked at a Science Center also, who was brilliant. Others did, in fact, take art classes, some of which, were my friends and got into college with scholarships in Art. I got a scholarship in piano to the college I'm at. We had Drama every year, and had usually two-three hundred people come to the shows. We had a great basketball team that all my siblings played for on different levels, and the Varsity beat most of the Christian and private schools in the city we live near, which has over a million people inhabiting it.

Now I know that not every homeschool group is like this, but I'm telling you, it works. I had lots of friends all the way through, and felt like I had many opporunities to socialize and excell in my academia. If you do homeschool, try to find people in the area that are as well, if there is not a group there. Believe me, we're not as strange as people think we are. I haven't had any trouble keeping up with homework and classes in college, because I had to be self motivated to a degree, but at the same time, I was pushed and helped along the way.

Anyway, I know this is a big decision, so don't make it lightly. Pray, talk to your parents, and do your research. But as for me, I wouldn't have had it any other way.

I was homeschooled for two years. ^^ But that was in elemantary school, and it fit really well with my personality then. I think whether or not you should be homeschooled vs going to school elsewhere for high school depends a lot on who you are. JediSonic, I'll pray for you. ^^
