Is anyone else here doing the Global Night Commute to raise awareness of the Invisible Children of Northern Uganda?
The kids of this area, on top of having to face the AIDS epidemic, poverty, and famine, have to be constantly on the run every night to escape being captured by the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army). If they are captured, they are brainwashed, tortured and turned into soldiers to help the LRA overturn the Ugandan government. The prime target age group is between 5-12. Big enough to carry a gun, small enough to sneak into places and capture more children.
Needless to say, it’s a really horrible situation. I saw the documentary (done by 3 college students) about a week ago at my church here on campus, its really powerful. If you have the chance, seriously, check it out, and get your youth group involved. People are meeting all across the country and marching x-many miles to the nearest City Hall/Capital building and camping out on the lawn to help raise awareness.

The guys who did Invisible Children are doing an awareness-raising event of some sort? I wasn't aware of this, I'll have to find out more about it. People in my area would definitely be interested.

It's horrendous what the LRA is putting those kids through. For those interested, Far Reaching Ministries is directly involved with reaching and protecting the children in Africa if you wish to pray for them and support them.

A lot of kids from my town are going to our biggest city in my state, unfortunately, I can not attend but I will be writing a story of those who do go, and their experience with this.
I watched the movie yesterday in school..it really opened my eyes to see how lucky we have it here in the US.
I can't imagine what these kids are having to endure....
I think Uganda needs a lot prayer and support...
BTW the beginning of the documentary was great....when they killed the snake..hah... the rest of the doc was so serious and sad though...it almost made me cry....
this has also inspired a drawing that I am working on that I will try to pass out to the public to raise more awareness of these poor children.... (I will post it here too).
I really wish I could go....

1) Pray. Praying is possibly the biggest and best thing that anyone can do.
2) Write letters to the President/State/Local government figures to ask them to push for legislation to help get US gov. support in helping end the war and catching the LRA leaders. This is what we're actually going to be doing while at the GNC: writing letters and creating artwork that's going to be auctioned off to help raise money.
3) Donate $$$. Every little bit helps.

Yeah, I wanted to make it, but it looks like a the closest city is in Indianapolis, and my parents probably won't be up for a 4 hour drive for me to spend the night somewhere. Thanks for posting this though. Good for other people to know.

I'm doing it! I saw the dvd probably a month and a half ago, and today I performed a 7 minute informative/persuasive speech on the topic in speech class. This is the kind of thing that really gets me, so, anything I can do to help, I'm there!

I just found out that a group for the Invisible Children movement is staying in the chapel of my dorm building for the night (I live in a small off campus dorm run by a church). ah! I really wish someone had told me earlier, so that I could have gone to the showing of the dvd. arg.
I'm really interrested in finding out more about the movement, I looked around the website. Guess looking into buying a dvd wouldn't hurt.

I thought it rocked. I went with my best friend, and once we got to the location, we met up with a friend who's actually interning this summer with IC as a digital artist/editor. (She shot footage of the entire night and will probably be used somehow, so if you see an interview with a short girl with dark glasses and a navy blue hoodie from MI, that would be meeeeeeee!) But, about 500 of us met up at a local church and walked 2 1/2 miles to the designated area. It was mad, we where marching in a column 2-3 wide, so we stretched on and on and on. We actually picked up a couple of other kids while walking because so many people kept slowing down and asking questions.
Once we got to the location, we all spread out our sleeping bags, and took a group photo in the evening light. After that we all wrote letters to political figures, did artwork, posed for photos, and mingled. I was shocked; I helped the girl do interviews with the staff and about 90-95% of the people there where from the high school age bracket, but we had maybe a dozen elementary school kids, probably a dozen middle-aged adults and around 60 college students. 1 Tim. 4:12 peeps, we are a mighty force to be reckoned with.
Other then that, someone brought a guitar, and our little group of singers multiplied from 5 to about 60 within half an hour of singing worship songs. We actually had the police show up and ask us to settle down because we where singing so loud....
But seriously, if you have the chance, check out the film, and its not to late to be a part of this. You can still write letters, set up donations, and hold showings of the film to raise awareness. The war has been going on for 20 years now; one night isn’t going to solve anything. A step in the right direction, but its going to take a lot more work to end this.

It was a very awesome experience, though I didn't sleep well and it drizzled on us for a long time. We also had a time of worship, which was really cool because I think there were a lot of people at our location that weren't Christians, so it became an opportunity to wittness. . . either that or just annoy the snot out of non-Christians who were trying to sleep, XD, although I hope that isn't the case.

Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.
Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.
But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence.
