Why so many cat girls?

Postby rocklobster » Sun Apr 30, 2006 4:50 am

Let's see. There sure are a lot of anime with Cat girls in them:
  • Outlaw Star
  • All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (duh)
  • Tokyo Mew Mew (sorry 4Kids, but I refuse to use your names)
  • Tenchi Muyo (granted, it was only in one episode and only extremely brief, but it still counts)
  • Dominion Tank Police
  • Thundercats (I still consider this at least Japanese made)

So why are there so many? And why do we never see any male cat-humans besides the ones in Thundercats? (BTW, the list only concerns ones I know of or have seen. If I missed any others, kome no sai.)

A freind told me once a long time ago but most of it aludes me, all I remeber is it had something to do with a couple old Japanese fairy tales and the fact that dogmen and catwoman are associated with sex or being sexy. Something weird like that but it made sense, wish I could remeber all of it though.

edit

better add .//hack roots to it, its got a cat girl in it "tabby" and I have no clue what she is but she uses two giant catpaws as weapons

To elaborate a little more, Japanese LOVE cute things (especially stuff like bunnies and kitties) and well, they like their girls (as seen in anythign fanservicey :/). Put the two together and you get... the ultimate Japanese character?

I like cat girls^^ So cute! It's what got me into things like Tokyo Mew Mew and Chobits (although I didn't realize it was a robotic ear until later). Oh and don't forget Utawarerumono! Although they aren't necessarily "cats" :/ Eh, close enough^^

I dare say the Japanese don't appreciate cuteness or girls any more than anybody else, on the whole...

Apparently I'm the only one who doesn't like catgirls. I think they're weird. And they are everywhere. I like cats, sure. I love Hello Kitty. But, people are people and cats are cats. Why only give them ears if you're gonna mix 'em? Why not a tail and some super slash claws?

Lots of them have tails as well ^^ Some also have claws and fur. It really depends on the artist and character design *shrug*

I like cats~ so cat girls/boys are good in my book. As long as they're properly dressed =_=;

It is indeed shounen-ai.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Tch. Regular girls are way more overdone. ;)

I love cat girls, but if you're looking for something much more unique, then...

There needs to be an anime where everyone is turned inside out. Now that's something that's not overdone. lol.
had enough.

0_o Inside out? That's kind of disgusting.

As for cat girls, meh. They are cute sometimes, but overdone.

Haha, I like to draw lamb ears on some of my characters, is that strange? xP

Though youths grow weary and tired
And vigorous young men stumble badly,
Yet those who wait for the LORD
Will gain new strength;
They will mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary.

Thank you for agreeing with me. I just don't understand the fascination. Maybe it's just because I haven't found a good anime with them in it.

Have you checked out Outlaw Star? Although Ashia's dub VA is kind of annoying at first, she is a funny character. She happens to be my favorite cat-girl.
