I agree with you there. The purpose of anime is to be viewed and heard, not read. Watching it in a language you do not know means that you lose some of the inflection (though you can certainly pick up some if you know the basics of a language). Also, if your series is worth much of anything and not old, there should be things moving onscreen that you will want to be watching.

That having been said, I don't have problems reading subtitles, even on some of the fastest-speaking anime. When multiple people are speaking at once it can get tricky, and sometimes I have to pause.

Now, as to language "speeds": I belive that people generally consider other languages to be faster than ones they know because their brain processes individual sounds instead of entire words. I have a friend who is half-American, half-Argentinian and grew up in both cultures; he says that all his Argentinian friends ask him why Americans talk so quickly and that Americans say the same about Spanish. Personally, I think Spanish sounds much slower to me now that I have a basic grasp of it.

W00t. My thread has reached 4 pages. I haven't come across problems with more than one person talking. Although, I've noticed that sometimes they put the words up before the person says anything. I think that's slighty weird. I mean, the words were up a good 15 secs before anything was said. Very strange. But, at least it wasn't going by too fast.

To me, I just love hearing people speak in Japanese. It makes me want so badly to understand it myself without reading it. I realize I'm very far away from that point, but I can dream, can't I?

I certainly don't think less of anyone else who prefers dubs. Tons of people like to watch anime dubbed - people who have seen far more anime than I have. And I have no problem with that. There are some instances where I like watching dubs equally if not better. I just think it's cool whenever someone likes anime. I've also come to realize people watch anime for all different reasons, and see it differently. I think it's pretty cool. It gives us all something to talk about.
