best sci-fi movies

The American Film Institute has compiled lots of lists about the best 100 movies in different categories. So what American Sci-fi movies would you compile in the best? I personally think the best one goes to Artificial Intelligence . This is a spectacular movie that is just awe-inspiring, not to mention saddening (poor David :sniffle: ).

Dark City, Alien, and Event Horizon; all three of which I never even saw in the theater.
Hopefully later this week I can say Silent Hill also.

Actually I thought Alien Rez was great. Alien 3 was the only one of the four that I didnt think was brilliant.

*The Day The Earth Stood Still,THE classic Sci Fi movie about alien invasion and misunderstanding. The central alien figure is a Christ figure.I think this is one of the must see Sci Fi films of all time.

*Plan 9 From Outer Space, why?Because it is so aweful it's become a legend. This is a how to in how NOT to make a Sci Fi flick.I believe this was also Bela Lugosi's last film.

*Forbidden Planet, the(yes I am going to say it folks)CLASSIC retelling of Shakespeare's The Temptest.Don't forget Robbie The Robot.

*Alien, the original movie is still the best.Sigourney Weaver battling the Alien as one by one it picks off her crewmates until only she and the ship's cat are left.Especially tense during the final scenes.

*Star Wars, again the original trilogy is much better than the prequel.

*E.T.,hasn't everyone seen this one by now?E.T. call home.

*Logan's Run,based on the novel about a society where the age limit is 30.

*Enemy Mine, based on the World War 2 movie about a Allied navy captain who plays cat and mouse with a German U-Boat captain,in the Sci Fi version a human
plays cat and mouse with an enemy alien until they're both stranded on a deserted
planet.

*Highlander, more fantasy than Sci Fi,but it is the movie that started the franchise.

Event Horizon was the first movie to scar me, though not the last, and is one of my favorite movies.

Hmm..did anyone mention Space Balls? =P

Not sure, but it deserves mention. XD I love that movie.

Anyways, I agree with those who said Star Wars, espescially the original trilogy. The prequel trilogy just wasn't as good, though episode 3 did come close (hey, it almost made me cry. In a good way. ).

Serenity and the original Star Wars trilogy would be my two selections. Space Balls would definately win my vote for best Sci-Fi film parody.

Fifth Element, Star Wars, Alien and Aliens are all great. Hmm, what else...Serenity/Firefly is also excellent.

I still don't know how I feel about AI. I mean, it was a well-done film, but it made me cry, and not in a good way.

Oh yeah, The Wrath of Khan is pretty good too.

Blade Runner
Alien (first one only)
Star Wars (IV and V)
The Matrix (first one only)
Metropolis (1927 version)
Forbidden Planet
The Day the Earth Stood Still (theme and story, not so much for effects)

Honorable Mentions:
Silent Running (more for theme than execution)
2001: A Space Odyssey (compare to other sci fi movies of the era, much better)
THX1138 (precursor to Logan's Run)
Terminator 2 (and only that one)

Since nobody's mentioned Gattaca, I felt the need. Even though it's not all space aliens and special effects, I felt it was a great sci-fi movie. I'd buy it.

So far the Sci-fi Parody pickings are looking a little slim, so I'd like to mention Galaxy Quest. It's a highly underrated film and it never ceases to amuse me, even on the twentieth re-watching when ya have all of the jokes memorized *has the DVD*

Then again, mebbe you have to be a Trekkie. Or in my case, raised by an obsessive uber-Trekkie (my father actually wanted to name me after a Vulcan Priestess) O_o

Ack, I didn't like AI at all. I saw it a few years ago, and it didn't do anything for me.
Besides, the whole Pinnochio-Blue Fairy-thing was so...dumb. XD I understand the whole thing about being a real boy, but...Whatever. XD AI was just stupid, in my opinion.
