I remember a Peanuts (Charlie Brown) book that came out many years ago entitled, "Happiness is..." One of them was, "Happiness is...falling asleep on the back seat of the car as your parents are driving you home." I could related to that so well because I remember it happening so many time. I still remember that feeling even today. And you always wondered how you got into bed when you woke up the next morning.

My father was a fireman with the LA County Fire Department for 25 years. They worked very strange schedules. My dad was very heavy in the snoring department, and I could always remember the sense of security on the nights he was home when I would hear him snoring down the hall. That also is happiness.

I think I remember the strip that was taken from! Charlie Brown had mentioned that to Peppermint Patty as they were sitting and talking under a tree. But then he said something that went along the lines of, "One day you grow up and it's all over... you never get to sleep in the back seat again." In a fit of panic, Patty grabbed his hand while exclaiming, "Hold my hand, Chuck!"

I think the one that Charles Schulz coined that got the whole "Happiness is..." thing going ended with "...a warm puppy," said by Lucy after Snoopy gave her a big hug.

For me, it would be a good, thick book on the weekend, no work, no school, no chores, nothing to keep you from reading. A steady supply of warm spanakopita, and cold cream soda.

Happiness will be the release of Jing 5.

I second the hug thing, but other than that, happiness is...

...Hearing a funny joke
...Reading a good book
...Leveling up your RPG character
...Beating your friends in Street Fighter
...Watching a good movie, anime, etc.
...Pizza, fried chicken, hot and sour soup, hot dogs, hash browns, seafood, bacon...
...Getting a package in the mail
...Arguing (although I would prefer to use the term "discussing") a complex issue with an intellectual equal
...Sweet tea (homemade, of course)
...Finishing a tough workout
...Snow on the trees
...New clothes
...The moment when you find the answer to a difficult problem
...Well-deserved sleep
...Helping others
...Knowing at the end of the day that you are better person that you were yesterday
...Praying
...Catching someone's eye just to see if you can
...Plans that work
...Hearing from old friends
...Saying (or thinking of) something clever
...Sitting in front of a roaring fire
...Beach, forest, mountains, clean cities

As you can see, I'm easy to please :)

happiness is: getting your mail order and sliding your brand new anime dvd or red hot chili peppers album out of its package for the very first time.
happiness is: turning around to find the girl you fancy talking to you (or is that a heart attack?)
happiness is: praying to God and feeling feedback

and I wouldn't agree that running out of room on a dvd rack is good because you have to go out and buy another! (i should know, my dad finally got me something to put my dvds on and it was filled up the second day i had it!)

:wow!: Some good answers from people...

Happiness is...

... watching a rainstorm out the window from the comfort of your couch, with a mug of cocoa in your hand
... having an art project come out the way you envisioned it, or better
... a hug from a good friend
... an honest answer from a good friend... by which you know they are a good friend
... being totally absorbed in a really good book or movie
... meeting a really interesting person, and being able to converse with them w/o awkwardness (I'm an introvert, so this is actually an unusual occurrence)
... waking up warm and comfortable, and realizing that you don't actually have to get up at that moment
... stepping outside and finding the world shrouded in mist (I love that!)
... being comfortable enough with someone that you both know you don't have to talk when you're together; you can just be together
... hiking your favorite trails on a beautiful day
... exploring new trails, and gaining new favorites that day
... listening to the trees whispering to each other, and almost understanding their language

Happiness is....

....fine food and fine wine
....understanding the equations
....a good book
....a white Christmas
....freshly cooked bread
....intelligent conversation
....getting your program to work
....listening to good music
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

Neil Postman

Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge
