I run in a fairly predictable cycle, actually. For a while, I'll be really into anime. After a while, that will fade, and I'll get into games. Then that will fade, and books enter the picture. Then I come full circle back to anime.
I've been following this pattern for about 9 years now, although the length of each cycle tends to fluctuate randomly (books is usually the shortest cycle).
I have found that my interest in things is kept higher for longer periods of time if I don't watch/play/read everything I can get my hands on. I also don't think this is a matter of 'getting bored' with the media so much as you 'get bored' because:
A) You're probably wasting far more time on it than you should, and God has a way of nudging you to do something.
B) You've read/played/seen all of the good stuff that's new, and everything else you've either already played/seen/read, or sucks.
All in all, it's a matter of moderation. Right now, I'm actually enjoying anime and gaming at the same time, which is a really unusual thing for me, but after taking anime in moderation for a year, my gaming interest is rising, and my anime interest is still here.
Now if only I was so motivated to do homework...
Embraced by a gentle breeze, my heart breaks as I think of you.
All alone at the top of the hill, I watch as the seasons go by.

Wishing for courage softly, I pray.
There's no going back now, to those tender days when you held me in your arms.
