CAA Lego Users Thread!

Postby Godly Paladin » Tue Apr 11, 2006 3:45 pm

There are a few Lego Maniacs on this board, I think, so I thought we should have a thread. In here you can put up pictures of your latest creations, links, commentary, whatever. Speak out!

Here is my first original Lego mecha. I built it over the weekend; took me about five hours. The feet can't go on until I get an order from Bricklink.com, but here's what it looks like now.

Image

It's not that impressive, but I'm proud of it because it's the best one I've made. ('Best' meaning it's color-coordinated, stands on it's own, and has full articulation. It's also sturdy, which almost made me cry from joy.)

Comments would be appreciated. When it's done I can put up some more detailed pics.

OOOOHHHH * drools oil *

The awesome black mech-ness astounds me. Looks solid and has a very functional feel to it.

Great stuff!

I have a LEGO work in progress .. and boy .. it is a work in progress indeed. Hahah. Just can't seem to find the time for it.

These are not mine, found these computer renditions of LEGO minifig-scale pianos online, but too good to pass up without telling you guys about it:

I love legos! However, I don't have very many, can't use my money to buy more 'cause I'm saving it, am still practicing my skills, and wouldn't know what to make... Check this out though:

http://www.blockland.us/index.asp?p=Download

It's a computer Lego thing where you can completely customize it.
But you have to pay for it! What's up with that?!

Heh ... my memories go back to when I was a rotten little kid and a horrible big sister. Zilch would work so hard on a plane, I'd grab it from him and flight test it - but they never flew. I'm sure it was character building though, right Zilch? ^^;

Hey Paladin, if you need someone to put your mech through a battle simulation, I have previous lego-testing experience. ;)

I loved Lego! My bros did that also Gypsy. Annoying as anything. Maybe not character building though. Still, I'm sure he's forgiven you now. At least I hope so! (lol)

I used to play with Lego so much, only had the basic ones and then later got some of the more genre specific ones but then they became to expensive.
Lego was one of the greater things in life.

I'm shocked that someone would make a thread on such a controversial topic. People, some of us are offended by Legos. Think before you post.

Right after I worked on it, I went online and found about a bazillion look-alikes. So it's only 'original' in that I built it without looking at something else.

I have a LEGO work in progress .. and boy .. it is a work in progress indeed. Hahah. Just can't seem to find the time for it.

Of course, now I have to hound you until you tell me about it. :poke: And that link is so cool! I've never seen anything like it before.

It's sort of ironic that I made a Lego thread when Legos are on death's door. Neither Wal-Mart nor KB Toys carries more than a few sets anymore...Legos are being absolutely annihilated by the very company that used to be a cheap rip-off five years ago: Mega Bloks. And hey, I don't blame stores for switching. Look at a Lego set nowadays and compare it to one made in the mid 90s. It's just sad how Lego refuses to use existing parts, and keep on making these new, totally inflexible elements for their models. The piece count per model just keeps falling, and the 'useable' parts are getting scarce , too.

While we're on the subject, who thinks that Bionicle was the worst thing to happen to Lego?

Okay .. yes .. many people are not fond of the Bionicles. I don't want to accidentally start a debate here .. so PM me if you want to know what I think on that. LOL.

One reason LEGO is using fewer parts is because they are seeing the trend that kids these days do not have the kind of determination like the kids before used to have when building toys. I guess this may be partially due to the fact that video games and tech. gadgets are so much more accessible and easier to use in that sense. Hence, kids may not want to spend as much effort on a toy when they could get the same amount of fun by just turning on a gaming console.

If you browse the shops that still sell LEGO, you will notice that a lot of their new City themed sets break the models into parts for easier building, and this is possibly LEGO's attempt to bring the kids back.

Mindstorms sets sold quite well, but around 70% of all the buyers for that kit were adults.

However, I think LEGO will still survive .. and besides the fact that they are rolling out a newer and better version of Mindstorms soon, there is one other word that will get some kids back in: BATMAN.

(I wuv my Bionicles. Or rather, I wuv building them. I don't really much care for the story now (it was pretty good at first, a few faults aside), but I still love the sets themselves. I never, ever play with them, I just build them. Over and over.)

(Dangit, GP, why'd you have to remind me that I loved building Bionicles NOW of all times?! I want to go build, but I need to prepare for Regionals if Julia and I are to qualify for Nationals. Meh.)

My sisters and I used to be BIIIIGGGG into Legos. We had like the ENTIRE western collection since we were obsessed with the horses. It was super cool! We had trap doors, exploding prisions, a bank with little pieces of money!!! :waah!: I miss them! O_o I think five years ago was the last time we played with them. They were so much fun!

You guys are right though... they are making sets easier to build. A part of me understands cuz when I was a kid I could never get the fancy, extreme western sets up and my sisters would have to do it. But another part of me doesn't like it since now I CAN put those sets together and it is SOOOOOO cool! (Not to mention that the new sets aren't as extravagent or cool.)

I started out with the simple "brick" style Legos that came in those buckets. Later as my "lego engineering" skills picked up on me, I was working on the huge sets with pieces 5x more complex than the rectangle\square pieces. I'll have to add that building lego airplanes is a blast!

I still have my trunk of legos somewhere. <3

If you guys want a free program in which you can build your models, there's only one place to go, and that's the legendary LDraw.

Here's the main site: http://www.ldraw.org

And here's where to go in order to download the whole shebang: http://www.ldraw.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=126

And here's the page for piece update packs: http://www.ldraw.org/index.php?module=LdrawUpdates

And UltraMagnus, I sent off a PM to you before I saw the link to your MOC. Apologies.
