Trouble with my camera

Postby Nate » Mon Apr 10, 2006 1:55 pm

I might just take it to a camera shop or something, but figured I'd ask here first.

I have a Sony DSC-S60 digital camera. When I put the selector in a mode that allows you to take pictures, and try to turn on the power, it makes the startup noise, then shuts off immediately.

If I turn the selector to the mode that allows you to review stored pictures, it works perfectly fine. It starts up, I can view my previous pictures, mess with them, whatever. If while the power is still on in this state, I shift the selector to a picture-taking mode, it shuts off as soon as I turn the selector.

It's not full of memory (it only has one picture), and the batteries are brand new (even the battery life icon shows a full one). I really don't know what else the problem could be.

If your camera has a lens cap, try removing it before turning the power on. We have one at work that has the same problem and that was the answer. (Not a Sony though :))

Have you tried removing the battery completely, waiting 30 seconds, then putting the battery back in? If the onboard memory is confused that might help.

NOTE: This is significantly different then leaving the camera "off" for a few hours.

I tried removing the batteries and waiting for a few minutes before reinserting them, but it's still acting the same. I called the support line and basically they want me to send it in to get repaired...of course, that hinges on whether or not Wal-Mart still has a copy of the receipt from last year. I'm REALLY terrible about losing things, and I tried keeping the receipt, but I don't remember where it is. So, if Wal-Mart doesn't have a copy, there's not much I can do apparently. :\
