Need Drama/Improv help!!

Postby Deny_Yourself » Wed Apr 05, 2006 10:47 am

I have to come up with ideas for improvs tonight for our Creative Arts Youth Ministry, and I'm running into brick walls left and right! ARGH!!!!

This week, we're hoping to come up with improv ideas that have to do with our theme for the night, which is faith and works. The skit is going to be a game show where the two contestants go up against each other, earning points for their various good deeds, only to find at the end that the person with the least amount of points had trusted in Christ for salvation, while the person with the largest amount of points hadn't...so the first person actually wins. Get it??

I can't think of improv ideas with that theme, though!! We break the large group into smaller groups of 4 or 5 and assign improv ideas for them to work on and act out (like "Whose Line is it Anyway?").

We're hoping to get them into the Bible and act out scenarios or passages or verses that have to do with our theme, but it doesn't have to be from the Bible. That would just be the best case scenario.

Any ideas, all you creative peeps out there???

Thnx in advance!! ^^

I think James 2:14-17 could be acted out, the imagery of a person telling someone who's starving to "go in peace" would probably be a good source for an improv to show the ballance between faith and works. You could also use Romans 4:16-25 as the basis for an improv as the idea of Abraham having faith that he could have a son even when he was 100 is interesting. You could also use numerous examples from Hebrews 11 as the basis for improvs. I hope this helps!

You could even use examples from the "hall of fame" of faith from the Bible. Like, maybe you could have them see who could hang a red chord out a window fastest (like Rahab), because in the end it wasn't the actual rope that really saved her, it was the faith behind the action. Something like that. And it would be really random too, and that's always good in my book. XD

There are lots of other hall of faith examples where they could do the actions, but only one had the faith. Just an idea, I'm not sure how it'd work out logistically.
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

If you aren't looking for originality, I'd definitely recommend using some of the "Whose Line" ideas (because they do know their improvised comedy). It would be fairly easy to have these be biblically themed without trying to wed them into deep theological concepts.

For a basic example, you could do "Scenes from a Hat" with prompts that would be familiar to the audience. The ones that occur to me off the top of my head:
Animals Noah Wouldn't Take on the Ark
Worst Animals to Make into Gold Idols
The Eleventh Plague on the Egyptians
Things You Don't Want to Hear When Baptised

you can pull out some pretty outragous works for the works person to do, like curing cancer, eradicating polio, saving a bunch of nuns from a burning bus, ending world hunger, etc.

"My name is Billy Jo Bob! And I am the best Christian! I give all my money away and I am a total philantrophist and I don't spend a single day in church or fellowship with other believers! But I love Jesus to some degree!"
Maybe something like that? That's pretty much what Puritan was saying

Wow...thanks, you guys!! ^^ I'll definitely be archiving this thread and coming back to it. What great ideas, all of you!

We did end up using Whose Line is it Anyway stuff...found a great website with transcripts, even.

We're sticking with the grace and works theme for next week, but using a skit about pride/humility to lead into the message. Here's the link:

The Island

If you have any ideas for themed improvs or even game ideas, keep 'em coming! I appreciate it so much!

Hey, that's pretty good! Short, sharp and shiny and to the point. It conveys the message without being boring. Good stuff!
