LCD laptop screens

well, my parents bought my sister a brand new laptop about 3 weeks ago, and just today she claims that she dropped it while it was in the bag (which is very cussioned) and the liquid crystal display is totally cracked now. Very ugly. I was wondering how one can fix this. Is there any way, cause if there isn't, my mom's gonna like strangle my sister. She already tried to punch me for throwing my 2 cents in so... help?

There Really Isn't Much You Can Do About An LCD Screen When It Gets Chipped, Cracked, Scratched Except Get It Replaced Under A Product Replacement Plan...

yeah, unless you have some sort of replacement warranty, you're pretty much out of luck, unfortunately.

Pretty much what my parents have decided is that my sister's gonna pay to get a replacement screen, but she's not gonna get to use it any more. Anyone know where one can get replacements?

I'm affraid that's pretty much it. If you have a replacement plan - you can get another one. Otherwise, unless you are comfortable with mucking with the insides (get a spare monitor from ebay) you're probably hosed.

BTW: You might check to see if the bag it was in has an insurace policy. Some of the higher end ones do.

well... do the bags cover damage from keeping the powersupply in the same pocket as the laptop? Judging from how it looks, if it was dropped the way she says it was, the powersupply would have impacted the back of the screen.

You'll have to send the laptop out to a repair centre. At my company, we have screens break every so often, and we just send them to the manufacturer to repair. I think it costs us about $400 to get the screen fixed. (plus we start feeling like moving away from the HP laptops we have - but that's another discussion)

If you have any important files on the laptop, you may want to remove the hard drive before you send it in. Otherwise, they may decide to just re-image the drive to factory spec. (we pull the drives on all the laptops we send in for repair)
