Well, today I went to Mass. No, I'm not catholic (though I respect all those who are) but a friend of mine suggested that I attend a Mass and take the rite of Confession (some struggles that have come up was the motivation for that) And to really learn about the Oldest surviving denomination. Well, I took Confession, enjoyed the Mass, and I feel, for the first time in awhile, cleansed and whole. I just wanted to share this little joy with all of you, whom I think of often.
A question, though, to any attentive Catholic's out there: What is the date for Saint Christophers day? He's the patron saint of travelers, and I'm curious.

My church (LCMS) has rites for individual confession, but practically no one uses them. It's too bad, because as you've seen it can be a great relief.

I've been to a Chatolic church before, once part of a youthgroup thing and once to seemy friend's sons' first communion (she and her family converted to Protestant a couple years back or so tho tho). Dunno what a confessional service is though. Care to provide a few more details?

Confessional is where you go and tell the priest your sins in private.Not a bad idea if you think about it and I think it's one of the things that the Reformers ought to have kept.

Actually, if you're referring to the fathers of The Reformation, the reformers did keep it. However, when it was no longer mandatory it waned in popularity to the point of virtual extinction.

He might of meant that they converted to Christianity as in Catholicism. Not From Catholicism to Christianity (Which makes no sense, seeing Catholicism IS Christianity. Although many disagree)

While I won't divulge the details of our conversation(becuase if I'd wanted public confession, I could have waited till a Penance service) But it was nowhere near as dramatic or formal as they make it out to be in the movies. Instead, I went to the private chapel, sat down with the priest, and confessed all of the things which had troubled me for the last several years. He listened, and gave me some solid advice about how to handle things, asked more questions, and then prayed over me (After I asked that it be a sacramental confession). As penance (A ritual which was supposed to show that the one participating was pentient, not supposed to be a punishment like I've always heard it made out to be) He requested that I read Psalm 51 and pray it like a prayer. After all of that (Which took forty minutes or so) It was time to go (I'm living on a military base right now, and they have to change out for different chapel services) and I shook his hand and rode my bike back to my place.
I'm really glad I went. I enjoyed service (even if they don't do alot of contemporary music, alot of the hymns...wow....) And took a small fellowship afterwards. All in all, a very good day(And it wasn't even ruined by the fact that I have to pedal 40 minutes each way on my bike to get there...)
So, I'm plannng on making it my church for the duration of my stay, and enjoy and learn as much as I can. I really can't wait for saturday evening mass though...I'll get to meet the actual priest (the one who I took the Rite with fills in around this area, espcially when other priests get deployed) And aquaint myself with the church as people.

Because the Bible says it's a good thing to confess sins with other believers. I wasn't aware confession with a priest somehow prevented you from also confessing to God in prayer. I'm pretty sure you can do BOTH.

It varies...in my church, they are right in the chapel. Some other churches have them in the basement.

In Catholic doctrine, confessing to a Priest is at the same time confessing to God. The Priest is what we call In Persona Christe, or acting in the person of Christ for the purpose of the sacrament. That is the only reason that the Priest may give absolution. He has no power to do so of his own.
The purpose of confession is true contrition for sin. In speaking to another human being about our sins, we demonstrate what we believe is a level of contrition that is more palpable than simply confessing alone where no mortal hears. As well, another very important aspect is that the Priest councils you concerning your sin and helps you to avoid despair. I have a Priest whom I confess to regularly, face to face. He knows me and my struggles. He has seen me get rid of difficult sins before with his help and continues to council me on my other issues. The way I see it. If you cannot confess your sins to somebody in person. How the heck can you geniunely confess to God? Talking about these things and having accountability partners is a way to boost your faith and develop closer bonds with other believers.

Of course, where I normally live(and must return to eventually) there isn't a close by Catholic church, so I will not be able to take confession for long, but I will be satisfied with the time I am given to be here and to speak with him (He's a very insightful man). His insights were somewhat painful (meaning he cut through to the heart of the issue rather quick) but it is exactly what God wanted me to hear (because after I left the chapel, I just felt his Spirit in a way I haven't in a long time) and I'm glad for the experiance.

Of course, where I normally live(and must return to eventually) there isn't a close by Catholic church, so I will not be able to take confession for long, but I will be satisfied with the time I am given to be here and to speak with him (He's a very insightful man). His insights were somewhat painful (meaning he cut through to the heart of the issue rather quick) but it is exactly what God wanted me to hear (because after I left the chapel, I just felt his Spirit in a way I haven't in a long time) and I'm glad for the experiance.

The one I typically go to seems to also have a very insightful way, which can be either piercing through to something I may be denying to myself or seeing when I am troubled with despair and so giving the appropriate reassurance of forgiveness.Headbangers United
